I've finished reading The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. It was fun ... very much on the lighter side, more about the people in the group (and the two cops who help them) rather than the plot. The mystery was okay but this time it was the cast in the driver's seat.

Finished two books in the last couple of days:

Again disappointed by a thriller’s ending. Here’s a link to my review:

In this sixth book in the Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie series, the police investigate two cold cases. The book works fine as a standalone.
Good police procedural. 3.5 stars

That said, it is very clinical, which I love, but YMMV.
CW: Very graphic description of rape, which is key to the story. And (view spoiler)

Ex-cop can't stop investigating the murder of his wife and in doing so uncovers multiple past murders. Interesting book -- part mystery part novel. I liked it but none of the characters seem particularly well fleshed-out or likeable. 3 stars.

In keeping with October's sort of supernatural-ish books I'm reading, I've just finished David Mitchell's Slade House. I think I should have read his The Bone Clocks prior to this one, but in the long run, it was a lot of weird fun.
more to come on that one.
In crime I'll be starting Banville's Snow; for Halloween reading I've got two going on: Witch-Cult Abbey by Mark Samuels, which has had this growing sense of creep beginning with chapter one (I'm now at the midpoint and still feel the chills), and
Queens of the Abyss: Lost Stories from the Women of the Weird, (ed.) Mike Ashley

I will interested in what you think of Snow. I liked it, 4 stars. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... I just read a review of it in the Washington Post, and she panned it. Her review https://www.washingtonpost.com/entert...
I seem to remember that you wait to read reviews until after reading the book.

Thank you, Thomas. I've bookmarked the review for when I've finished the novel.

Stanley Hastings #3, OK to read as a stand-alone. Stanley does a favor for a cop friend and gets into serious trouble in Atlantic City. Fun, light weight mystery. Easy to read, great for by-the-pool. 3 stars.

In this fifth book in the 'Cajun Country Mystery' series, amateur sleuth Maggie Crozat investigates the murder of a country singer's manager. The book can be read as a standalone.
Entertaining cozy with recipes. 3 stars

I have read another review from LA Times, which liked the book. My wife, the LA Times and I like his use of language

Next in line is the 3rd DI Anna Travis mystery, Clean Cut by Lynda La Plante

Lady Cop Makes Trouble by Amy Stewart was a lot of fun!

You are welcome.

Stephanie Plum #6, OK to read as a stand-alone. The further adventures of Stephanie Plum, girl bounty hunter. This is one of the best in the series, very funny and with a plot buzzing ahead at the speed of sound. 4 stars.

These early ones were the best books in the series. 😊

Magic Men #3, OK to read as a stand-alone. Brighton, England , 1953. The body of a lady Gypsy has washed up on the beach. Suicide? Murder? And who is this mysterious Army General? Another excellent entry in the adventures of Edgar, Max, Emma, and Ruby -- this time with Gypsies. 4 stars.

In all honesty, it's cripplingly slow and even though I'm only half way through, I've already worked out what happens at the end.

not crime, but I've started reading The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. It's a reread but it's been so long that I have to get ahead of the action in The Haunting of Bly Manor before I go back to watching it. I'd forgotten how much I love this story.
Also not crime, finishing up Queens of the Abyss: Lost Stories from the Women of the Weird (ed.)Mike Ashley.

In this 13th book in the 'Maisie Dobbs' series, the English private investigator looks into the killing of Belgian refugees during WWII. The book can be read as a standalone.
Good historical mystery. 3 stars
