Welcome to the group, Kassie.
I remember first reading The Exorcist as a teen when I was doing a weekend-long babysitting job. I didn't sleep that entire night.

This 26th book in the Hannan Swensen series is a flashback to the baker's early days as owner of 'The Cookie Jar' bakery in Lake Eden, Minnesota. Hannah and her friends and family try to help a homeless man with amnesia. The book can easily be read as a standalone.
Slight story with plenty of delicious recipes. 3 stars

Brooding? No. Atmospheric? No. Suspenseful? Mildly, in parts. Interesting? Yes, like a car wreck you can't look away from.

I just yesterday got my copy of The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman so I'm going to try to read it in between books.

Fethering #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Carole finds a set of old human bones and of course the ladies must follow up this mystery. Cute entry in this cozy series, rather a slow beginning but a nice light read. 3 stars.

A quiet, atmospheric mystery from a favourite author.

Finished rereading The Big Nowhere by James Ellroy. Great noir, crime books seldom feel so epic and sprawling but it is dark, as bleak (maybe even more) as anything I have read all my life. Rating - 5/5

I haven't read anything else by Larry Brown. Joe is my first by him. I like it though, so I don't think it will be my last.

It outdarks dark. After reading Black Dahlia and The Big Nowhere in succession, I had to stop reading Ellroy for a few days before I could go on to LA Confidential. And we're talking about me, queen of reading bleakness.

Dirty Work is a not-to-be-missed book.

I've seen the TV-series, which was excellent, but never read the book. Can't recall many details, but remember that the plot was as complicated as always with le Carré. Enjoy!
If there is enough interest, I'd like to organize a buddy read for Alex Pavesi's The Eighth Detective. Maia at Henry Holt emailed me and if we can get a group together to read the book, they are beyond happy to furnish free copies (either e-book or physical) for everyone who is interested. Please let me know asap so I can let her know. Thanks.

James Crumley is as hopeless, Joseph Wambaugh is as cynical but both offer a healthy dose of dark humor to make it palpable. Ellroy however is in a class of its own when it comes to bleakness.
Aditya wrote: "@Nancy It would have been surprising if you had not taken a break. Hell the murder mystery itself is so utterly perverse, you need some time away from Ellroy to make sense of it. And the Quartet ge..."
I agree with you completely on all counts.
I don't think I could have gone on with LA Confidential and White Jazz had I not stopped for a bit after Big Nowhere. White Jazz is nearly as bad as Big Nowhere in the OMG department. At the same time, if you count it as one work (the LA Quartet), it's just genius. And it just goes to prove that anyone who doesn't think crime fiction can be literature is wrong.

For me James Lee Burke, James Ellroy and Raymond Chandler are not just crime writers. They are great writers, end of story. There are other writers who occasionally write literature under the guise of genre fiction (Mystic River, a few Tana French books) but those three consistently transcend the genre.
I think I did read all four back to back 5-6 years ago but I have learnt since then to alternate authors. It adds a lot to the reading experience specially when I stick to genre fiction 90% of the time.

Finished A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle. Decided to reread Holmes after maybe 16-18 years, is a lot worse than my nostalgia made it appear. Anyone who thinks Holmes is good detective fiction needs to read a lot more of the genre. Rating - 3/5

John Putnam Thatcher #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. Thatcher gets caught up in a murder at an auto manufacturer in Detroit. Copyrighted in 1966, this book reads like 1936. A slow American Cozy. Just OK.

Podcaster Rachel Krall covers the rape trial when a golden boy college swimmer is accused of assaulting a high school girl.
Good story. 3.5 stars

That's a good one. I think I own all of his books (numerous pseudonyms included). Started reading and collecting them eons ago. Penzler Publishers has been reissuing them a bit at a time, as has British Library Crime Classics.
