Continuing my look back at early books in long running series with An Advancement of Learning by Reginald Hill. I've seen many episodes of the TV version of this series, which I enjoyed, but it seems I have not read many of the actual books. Classic British police procedural which is a favorite genre of mine so I am enjoying it so far.

In this second book in the 'Timothy Wilde' series, Tim is one of New York City's first police officers - on the trail of corrupt slave catchers. The book can be read as a standalone.

Good historical mystery. 3.5 stars

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments I've had a couple of political reads recently. Colombiano is about the terrifying situation of kidnappings, guerrillas, and drug wars in Colombia.

Aussie-born author Rusty Young spent a lot of time there and wrote this compelling, fictionalised, first-hand account of a child soldier.

Lilith (lilithp) | 368 comments I just finished The God Gameby Danny Tobey. Sort of Ready Player Onemeets Angels & Demons.

I really enjoyed it. I was surprised to find that the characters were mainly teenagers, and wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a YA novel, maybe? It's pretty dark, and I got really invested in the characters. It worked as a thriller for me - I had to read Thich Nhat Hanh so I could calm enough to go to sleep lol.

Danny is an illegal immigrant in Australia who works as a cleaner. When one of Danny's former clients is murdered, he's torn about giving evidence to the police and exposing himself as undocumented.

Interesting story but it moves too slow. 3 stars

FBI Agent Sean Reilly tracks Russian terrorist armed with modern version of mind altering weapon invented by Rasputin's assistant (!). Best not to think too much about the plot. If this was a movie it would go straight to video. 2 stars.

Araych | 676 comments Evidence Evidence (Alex Delaware, #24) by Jonathan Kellerman by Jonathan Kellerman

Alex Delaware #24, OK to read as stand-alone. Much more Milo (the cop) than Alex (the shrink). Very little of the usual psycho-babel, this is a straight ahead police procedural by a professional author. Starts with a double murder in an unfinished McMansion in an upscale L. A. suburb, and then gets complicated. I really liked it, 4.5 stars.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9973 comments Act of Darkness Act of Darkness (Gregor Demarkian, #3) by Jane Haddam by Jane Haddam

In this 3rd book in the 'Gregor Demarkian' series, the former FBI agent investigates problems in a political campaign. The novel is set in the time of Reagan and Nixon, but it could just as easily be happening today. The book works fine as a standalone.

Okay mystery. A bit too 'talky.' 3 stars

I like your review, Thomas. As you said in the review, Snap made the 2018 Booker longlist, but Milkman was the winner. I remember only because it's a favourite of mine, and I often don't like the prize winners. :)

Outrageously entertaining crime novel about a Mafia contract killer who reinvents himself as a doctor. Hospital/killer story by Quentin Tarantino and Hunter Thompson. I guarantee this is the most fun you'll have reading a book this year. 5 stars.
