I've been a busy reader person over the last few days. Last night I finished Little Eyes, by Samanta Schweblin (one of my favorite authors). In her book, everyone is wild about these little stuffed toy things on wheels called kentukis that are controlled by other people from their computers and whose eyes provide a window into the lives of the owners.

What else: reading and just about finished with a French book following two crimes that made the headlines in their day called La Séquestrée de Poitiers by André Gide; just started another called Mortal Echoes: Encounters with the End (ed.) Greg Buzzwell.

Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Just finished The Professor by Robert Bailey. I couldn't give it higher than a 2-star review for its stereotypes and often one-dimensional characters. This is the first in the McMurtrie and Drake courtroom dramas.

The Professor (McMurtrie and Drake Legal Thrillers, #1) by Robert Bailey Robert Bailey

In this 2nd book in the humorous 'Detective by Day' series, private detective Dayna Anderson investigates when a Hollywood publicist is killed. The book can be read as a standalone.

Plenty of laughs in this mystery. 3.5 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9972 comments Furmidable Foes Furmidable Foes by Rita Mae Brown by Rita Mae Brown

Farmer/amateur sleuth Harry Haristeen worries her 'talking pets' when she helps the sheriff's department investigate murder. Meanwhile, Harry is busy landscaping her church's gardens.

The modern story alternates with plantation tales from 1787.

The book is more fiction than mystery, but would appeal to gardeners and fans of post-Revolutionary War stories. 3 stars

message 1030: by Nichelle (new)

Nichelle Seely (thegalaxygirl) Decided not to finish Innocent by Scott Turow. This was the first book by him I have tried to read (I'm not generally interested in courtroom thrillers). Boring recap of previous book, unethical protagonist, cliche'd plot line verging on sexist--just got to be too much. Disappointing--I'd heard so much good about him.

Meanwhile continuing re-read of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (read years ago, don't remember the plot). While it's still a solid novel, I'm less impressed with it than I was the first time. Lots of historical info dump, which is interesting but could have been streamlined (although it is almost 40 years old, so I can forgive some stiffness ;-) ). The erudition of the author comes through, which is by turns staggering and annoying. Pressing on....

message 1031: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Radley | 558 comments I have been trying to read John Dickson Carr books and am really disappointed so far but am sticking it out with Castle Skull.... I just find him a bit of an idiot... both the writer and the detective gahh... the dramatic stuff is almost hammer horror to the point it’s hilarious rather than terrifying. But will see though am expecting this novel to be as bad as the others written by him..

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Started reading REDEMPTION ROAD by John Hart a few days ago. I was very leery about reading him again after being so disappointed with his latest novel THE HUSH.

REDEMPTION ROAD is starting off okay so far. We will see if it is able to stand up against Hart's stellar earlier novels (KING OF LIES, DOWNRIVER, THE LAST CHILD, and IRON HOUSE).

Araych | 676 comments Nightwalkers Nightwalkers (Cam Richter, #4) by P.T. Deutermann by P. T. Deutermann

Cam Richter #4, OK to read as stand-alone. New author and new series for me, wish I had been able to start with #1. At any rate, really liked this book--Cam decides to buy an old Southern mansion and the transaction gets weird very quickly. A real page-turner --- great quirky characters, complex plot, writing as smooth as single-malt Scotch. 5 stars.

Lilith (lilithp) | 368 comments Just started The Arrangement by Robyn Harding and I'm hooked.

I've been reading a great many other books for another challenge, but have not been able to fit many mysteries or crime-centered books into the prompts. It does get me to diversify and stretch my horizons, but I'm excited when I find a mystery/thriller/true crime that fits. This one is so satisfying, so far.
