Smoke and Ashes by Abir Mukherjee. A middle of the road historical crime novel. Rating - 3/5

Down the Darkest Street
by Alex SeguraPete Fernandez #2, OK to read as stand-alone. I had to work hard to finish this book, Pete's personal struggles wore on me and sort of competed with the serial killer plot. Book is very dark, both the plot and Pete's issues wearing upon the reader. I've read Pete #1 and #2, I won't be continuing the series. 2 stars.
Finished Lieberman's Folly, reading Bloody Genius (Virgil Flowers) by John Sandford, listening to A Woman in the Woods by Connolly.
I'd taken a break from reading thrillers for a bit, but got back into the swing of things with J.D. Barker's The Sixth Wicked Child. It was every bit as exciting and suspenseful as his first two books in the series. The Sixth Wicked Child J.D. Barker
For anyone who has not yet begun this trilogy, I suggest you move from one book to the next in fairly rapid succession, otherwise you may forget some of the details from the preceding book because Barker moves right on with the story.
Puddin' on the Blitz
by Tamar MyersIn this 21st book in the comical 'Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery' series, amateur sleuth Magdalena Yoder - a Mennonite woman who eschews things like television, movies, and dancing - is accused of murder. The book can be read as a standalone.
The plot is thin, but there are plenty of laughs. 3 stars

Bill wrote: "I gave up on a book today, probably the 2nd time in the past many years. The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox. I'm probably setting aside an excellent book, but after 1..."I had a hard time at first, but was glad I kept up with it and read the sequel/prequel "The Glass of Time." Michael Cox the author worked music and publishing and was an authority on Victorian literature and wanted to write an authentic Victorian novel. He said the ideas came to him 30 years before he decided to write it, and while he was writing it, he developed serious symptoms that turned out to be a brain tumor - he got one of the highest advances in a bidding war, and died after writing only those two novels.
I love novels set in the Victorian era but my issue with them is they come off sounding too "modern"
Just finished:
The Day I Died by Lori Rader-Day
A thriller that unfortunately falls a bit short. My full review:

Barbara wrote: "Bill wrote: "I gave up on a book today, probably the 2nd time in the past many years. The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox. I'm probably setting aside an excellent book..."I'm glad you enjoyed it, Barbara. I like books set in that era as well. I just lost patience this time.
Los Alamos
by Joseph KanonAward-winning spy novel set in the spring of 1945, where the U.S. was trying to build the atom bomb and so win WW II. Extremely well-written with very interesting period detail. My only (minor) criticism of the book would be that it didn't need to be 400 pages -- perhaps a little tightening? But highly recommended. 4 stars.
About to begin

Kathryn wrote: "John wrote: "Recursion by Blake Crouch, about to start The Troop by Nick Cutter"I loved The Troop!"
I started reading The Deep years ago but never finished it. Sometime this month or next with the Covid-19 outbreak spreading. I want to get it back to it that still resides on my currently reading list and finish it this Spring.

I didn't really enjoy The Deep, much preferred The Troop

I commend you that finished reading this book a lot of it is just so boring material. It also takes a lot of research of on a host of English terms and using Google maps for reference points. This book is definitely no light reading for an historical novel to say the least. It's 100% written for U.K English literature readers than it is for the average American reader. It's also stupid that the Russian translations don't make much sense. It sucks as writer that he include for the reader the translations either. This book is so complex and dull I may never pick it up again.
Just finished the brilliant
Rain Dogs by Adrian McKinty. I feel sad that there's currently only one more book in the series waiting for me to read....my spoiler free review can be found at https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/... and https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
High Five
by Janet EvanovichStephanie Plum #5, OK to read as stand-alone. The most entertaining female bounty hunter in all of New Jersey is at it again. She starts out looking for her missing uncle and that case leads to complication after complication. These are light, fun mysteries. 4 stars.
