CBRetriever | 6133 comments Very interesting article

https://www.tor.com/2019/12/19/2010-2...

it talks about the new African writers, Cli-Fi, the slow demise of YA as a major trend, Dystopia, the change in female characters over the decade, diversity and Murderbot.

Amanda | 262 comments Well, my TBR is going to explode now.

Seriously, so many books they mention, that I was aware of, that I now definitely need to look further into. So I guess that's what I'm doing today.

My TBR was already out of control. This article isn't going to help but it's fascinating reading anyway.

Why do I keep imagining that sculpture covered in TBR spandex?

bwahahaha

Cheryl (cherylllr) Well, they missed noting the main reason I loved The Martian: it's got no villain, no bad guy. The conflict is with 'nature.' Why can't we have more books like that? Especially in speculative fiction?!

I can't believe how many books I added to my list. I really thought I hit all the significant and influential books of the decade, but no. Still so much more to read.

It's interesting how much credit they give to POC and minority representation for changing SFF whilst stating that these stories aren't new but that they're just getting published now. That effort is being put in to correct the lessons we are/were taught about history.

Can any of you remember what sci-fi you were reading in 2010 and where your heads were at? Pretty sure I was complaining that there wasn't enough sci-fi along the lines of District 9 but also that it's ridiculous that the only way to get people to engage with race and racism was to write about aliens. I mostly watched rather than read sci-fi back then.

I chuckled when someone said, “It’s a survival story!” “It’s Robinson Crusoe!”

There’s literally a movie called Robinson Crusoe on Mars. 😂

(coming back from vacation and catching up!)

I added a few books to my TBR, too.

A minor error is the implication that Ancillary Justice is in conversation with Murderbot rather than the other way around. AJ was 2013, Murderbot was 2017.
