Thank you so much! I have been reading Darcy Unmasked and it is so good. I appreciate your directions, tried them, and get it. You are so nice! Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Thanks. I am also a lover of reading hard copy books. I tried to read books on the kindle app for ipad but didn't like it.

I have only read one book all the way through on the kindle but I will tell you my thoughts so far.

I love the size and weight of it. Mine is in a cover so it weighs more than if it was by itself. It is much easier to hold and work with than an actual book or an ipad.

The way it is lit does not hurt my eyes to read in a dark room or during the day, again, unlike the ipad. The texture of the screen is pleasing.

I don't know if they designed it to feel like a page but it is very nice. It is great that it has a texture and not a glossy feel.

It was very easy to set up and use and comes almost fully charged out of the box. The few questions I had were graciously answered here. Thank you!

I like that I can store my books on it and not take up space on the ipad.

I like the bookerly font.

I love the ability to quickly look up names for reference. So cool!

I love that I was able to borrow books and will be able to loan my books out.

Paired with kindle unlimited, I will save a lot of money. $9.99 a month for the service. I am saving a ton of money.

So far, I am really glad that I got it. I will be taking it on a trip this week and will let you know what I think later in the week.

I got the kindle paperlight as suggested here. I went with the 3G (you pay $70, with amazon paying for the service after that) and the no ad option for another $20. Yes, I dislike advertisements that much that I was glad to pay to not have them.

Ceri | 233 comments I'm so glad you're enjoying it Talia! I really enjoy reading on a kindle. I know some people read on iPad, which is fine for a bit, and I even read on my phone if I'm out and about but I find reading on a kindle is so much more pleasant.

You may already know this, but in case you don't, you can put the books in collections (like folders) so you can find things more easily. From memory, I think you do this by pressing and holding the book and one of the options that cone up is 'add to collection'. You can have things in multiple collections too. I find it really useful, as sometimes I might want to browse for a book I've read in a genre rather than look for a specific title, and I can also depress myself by seeing just how much unread JAFF I have!

I did see the collections option but haven't grouped books yet. Thank you for reminding me and letting me know how to use it. I appreciate it.

I find that the kindle is so much better to read on than the ipad. So, far I am really glad to use it.

BTW, another comparison just came to mind. If I use my ipad, the power runs out so quick that I have to remember to check the power level before bringing it to bed. I often wake up at night and want to read but have too little power. That problem is now solved.

Every time I use the kindle, I think of another reason why it is superior to the ipad kindle app.

Talia (kneyda) | 243 comments My first book read on the kindle is Darcy Unmasked: A Pride and Prejudice Variation. I really liked this book. Lydia was incredible as usual in a "want-to-hit-your-head" way. Darcy was adorable. My only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer.

message 408: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments So true, the battery lasts much longer on the kindle, and if you want to read on a kindle you won't be blinded by it when you put it in in the middle of the night! The iPad is fine in the day, but too bright when you've just woken up. The kindle is also nicer to read outside too, far less glare :)

I haven't used it outside yet but that will come this week on vacation. I set the light low last night before bed and you are right about it not blinding you. Plus, it is so light and props up easily to read in bed.

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments Did either of you read "Being Mrs. Darcy?" So you know why this book isn't published? I am enjoying it so far but wish it were in ebook format.

It doesn't come up at amazon at all. Is it good?

message 412: by Claudine (new)

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments Yes. I could email you it in a word document. It's very long, about 950 pages, which I love. It's very different. It's a forced marriage scenario but it's right after Ramsgate so Darcy and Elizabeth do not know or like each other and Darcy is very hauty... As well as his whole family but it's well written and I over the idea of a long road to finding the good in each other as that seems realistic. It's well rated by the few who have rated it and the author seems very interesting and smart after I read an interview with her online. Should I send it to you? No pressure.

Sure. Thank you. It is not available for sale?

message 414: by Claudine (new)

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments No and it's too bad... I really like it so far but it's different. It's close to canon but since no one knows Elizabeth before she marries Darcy it's so unlike other P&P variations.

Sounds great. Thank you. Can I send this to my kindle to read it there?

message 416: by Claudine (new)

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments Yes but it's a little hard to read there. Try it and see. The font is small. I'm actually reading it as a word doc on my iPhone 6 plus...

Ceri | 233 comments I love this one, though it's really long. It's a fantastic read and I'd recommend it to anybody as long as they don't mind sex scenes. The writer doesn't want to publish, which is a real shame. I saved it as a notepad file on my kindle.

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments What's a notepad file?

message 421: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments It's just the notes program that comes with windows. At the time I didn't know kindle would read word docs so I saved it there instead. It makes text files (.txt)

How do you save it to notepad on kindle? Should I save it as a text before I send it?

When you tried to read it on kindle, did it show the whole page at once like an image?

message 428: by Claudine (new)

Claudine DiMuzio / Just Jane 1813 | 197 comments Yes but small font.
Then when I read it in landscape mode it cut small parts off.

Ok so maybe notepad is a better way. Can anyone help me with how to do that? I am assuming I start by saving this as a text file?

message 430: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments I cut and pasted the individual chapters, though that's a bit time consuming. If you message me your email address I'd be happy to send it to you. I don't know if it'd display any differently to word docs though, I've always been able to resize font etc when readin word docs on kindle.

Ceri | 233 comments PDFs are not good on a kindle. There is a free program you can download which converts them to mobi files. It is called Calibre. Some of the lines might break in odd places but the text will be a decent size.

Ok, let me try Calibre first. Off to do that now. I would love to read this on my trip!

I just thought of another great reason to get a kindle. There are a lot of JAFF books that are only available as ebooks. I would miss them otherwise.

message 441: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments That is very true, and fan fiction published on the web only is far nicer to read on a kindle than on a pc. There is another benefit for me, which is that I am able to enter more competitions for JAFF, as usually ebooks are open internationally :)

Mary | 30 comments Just read the posts and yes, unfortunately I now realise that not all the Jane Austen variations are available as paperbacks. Plus reading them in paper form is a little expensive!!! The deciding factor for me was that I knew I could return it. I am really glad I got it.

I did try it outside the house today and it is incredible in daylight too. Even my husband is thinking of reading on it now. He is not a great reader so that is a real testament to the draw of the kindle.

Please let us know if you get one. I was advised to get the paperwhite version and like it very much.

message 449: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments You can read kindle books on the PC if you download the kindle program, or on the kindle app on smartphone or a tablet, so if you spot a freebie while you're deciding whether to get a kindle don't hold off from 'buying' it!

I have to say, I'm a complete convert to kindle. My husband wanted to get me one a few years ago for Christmas and I was sceptical, but because I couldn't think of anything else I wanted I got one and within no time at all you'd have had to prise it from my cold dead fingers before I'd give it up! That is not to say that I've got rid of a single real book though :)

I am planning to buy the hardcopy books of the JAFF that I really love. I like the idea of reading them on the kindle first. It will save me time and money. BK (before kindle), I would buy a book from description, read it and then have to sell it on amazon if I didn't like it or couldn't see myself reading it again.
