As someone who grew up in Colorado I'm going to suggest Mining as that is a major part of the history of the state and its eventual statehood.For PA, I want to suggest Quaker as the founder of the Pennsylvania colony, William Penn, was a Quaker.
I meant Nikki and I are going with Mountains! But mining isn’t bad either, Sara! Interesting what different people come up with. I know that whatever the challenge option is going to be it’s going to be fun and thoughtful. For newer members I really want to say that the mods work really hard to come up with really neat options for us, and in fact it’s a huge part of their holiday season prep. And they should be applauded for how hard they work. Whatever gets presented and whatever is ultimately picked it’s just gonna be fun and pleasurable for all of us. Just make sure we really appreciate what goes into it for them. Thank you, Anita, Cindy, Anna, and Nicole!

Hmm. No tags for Kansas (KS)? I'll nominate Civil War for the border state shenanigans.For my neighbor state that I lived in for a bit, Missouri (MO), I'll go Thriller in honor of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, which kicked off the trend in twisty domestic thrillers.
And I'll give a couple neighboring states some love too.For Iowa, I'm going with Poetry since they're home to the famous creative writing program and one of my former classmates, a poet, got her MFA there.
I also nominate for Nebraska, weird-fiction, in honor of their advertising campaign about being weird and not for everyone.

I am bookmarking that rodeo shelf! Lol. Rhode Island is the Ocean State, has lovely beaches, lands more squid for your calamari than any other state, and is the home of coffee milk. I also think that we have more Dunkin Donuts per capita than any other state. Lol. Chickens is good too! Roger Williams and religious freedom started in RI.

Yes--we took our kids to the Roger Williams Zoo because it was the best zoo in decent driving distance even though we are in the next state.
But also, there is the Big Blue Bug so my tag suggestion for Rhode Island is biology

Re: Iowa- there’s a lot here, too, in case anyone’s looking for suggestions: we have the only UNESCO City of Literature in the US, the Iowa Writers Workshop, the Van Allen belt was discovered by a University of Iowa professor, the family farms are wonderful fodder (sorry, bad pun) for fiction. We have lots of biodiversity- even a lost moose once!
Just so long as it’s not the Bridges of Madison County... though they are pretty cool. We also have consistently good college football, women’s basketball and wrestling.

Jenny, Georgia (Masters Golf) and Iowa (Glenn Miller) were the only ones I had a problem with - for Georgia, you have to pick either "masters" or "golf" as there is no "Masters Golf" shelf. None for Glenn Miller either.
The others I was able to work something out: e.g. for Ben & Jerry's ice cream I just did "ice cream", and other shortened ones were "capital city", "smallest", "birthplace", "prison", and "women vote". If you'd like to change any of those, just let us know. There has to be an existing GR shelf.

How interesting. I am currently homeschooling my 13yr old and have him learning the states in order of entering statehood and then he has to make a recipe from that states. I will have to see what we learned so far and/or may learn in the future to see if I can incorporate that into reading.

Mine has a database called Culturegrams which is a geography resource about the culture, history and people of a place. There's a US and world section, and each place (including states) has recipes too!
