This year we've decided to do something new at Who's Your Author?--a Not So Secret Santa Book Suggestion Exchange. It's something I developed in another group several years back and thought it'd be fun to bring it here. A virtual exchange ensures that if someone forgets to send (or in this case recommend) a book, another individual can easily slip in and do so. Also, it's a way to ensure we don't neglect our overseas members, because postage to another country can sometimes be more than the book originally cost. Yikes! So for this exchange you will get to know 2 other members by doing the exchange--your Not So Secret Santa and the person you are the Not So Secret Santa to. You will suggest a book to someone and someone else will suggest one to you.

So, how do you join?
1. Sign up by November 25th.
2. We will post names in this topic by December 10th, and see what everyone suggests.
- List your Not So Secret Santa suggestions here by December 20th so we can see what everyone recommends.
- Try to recommend three different books so the recipient can make a choice from what you recommend.
- On December 25th let us know what book each of you has picked, if multiple people are reading the same book (at least 2), we may set up buddy reads or discussion threads depending on which you prefer.
3. Get suggestions up by December 20th.
4. Make your selection by December 25th.
5. Try to read the book by January 31st.

Things you may wish to consider:
1. Would you like your secret Santa, and possibly others, to discuss the book with you?
2. Would you be willing to discuss the book with the person you make a book suggestion to?

Things you may wish to find out about the person you'll be recommending a book to:
1. What type of books do they mostly read? (Do they mainly read PNR or UF?)
2. What type of book would they like to have suggested by their Not So Secret Santa?
3. Do they want a book readily available from their local library or would they mind purchasing something new?
4. Are there certain things within books they do not wish to read? For example, Do they not like sad endings? Do they not like the f-bomb being dropped every 2 seconds? Are erotic books out of the question?
5. What is their reading comfort zone? How many pages would they like to stay within?
6. Also, find out what books they've read and make sure what you suggest is not one of them. As not all books a person has read are listed on their book list double check with them before committing yourself to the suggestion.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments We had a question about whether or not real books would be bought and exchanged for this event and the answer is no.

My question about whether or not you'd be willing to buy a book was in regards to if your Santa recommends a book that has recently come out or is about to. The only buying of books should be if you wish to. The exchange is for recommendations only. When the idea of doing a book gift exchange first came up I worried about some people sending books and not receiving one in return. Then there was the issues of minors participating and I, being a mom, did not feel comfortable with that information being exchanged among members. We have no way of knowing who the person is behind their Goodreads name. So to keep it fun and safe, we opted for a recommendation exchange.

If anyone else has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Amy interesting concept. :) I dont use goodreads too much, but may be using it more in the future. I dont use it enough right now to sign up for anything, but was wondering if anyone knows if there's a thread to borrow & lend Kindle books.

message 20: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments I think there are actually a couple of GR group dedicated to that. Individual groups sometimes try it, but I haven't seen it done successfully.

message 21: by Roxy the Fury (new)

Roxy the Fury (roxythefury) Most local libraries have ebook libraries that are on a national database. If you're near a large city try the main library's website. I actually found out about my library through a GR thread. It's usually a free app. Hope this helps.

It was only a little over 2 years old. My hubby is looking into getting me another hard drive. Until then, I'll be on sparsely. Sorry. I meant to get the list up yesterday.

Either I did it right or you're going to have to point out to me what I did wrong because I'm not seeing it. I think there's only one Jennifer participating unless you want to take on someone else? I just searched on the name Jennifer and see one post for who you are the secret Santa to and another post for who will be your secret Santa. As far as I can see, you're the only Jennifer. Although after you posted twice, maybe you're secretly identical twins with the same name? (That, incidentally, would be way cool) If you are indeed a set of identically looking and named twins, I have no idea how your parents keep track of you.

Let me know if I truly am just not seeing what you meant and I apologize in advance for my goofiness. I just couldn't help myself when I saw the duplicate posts. It made me laugh. GR can be so goofy and, obviously, so can I. I admit I almost added an extra Amy and then realized one of the two who posted said she wouldn't be able to participate.

message 30: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Ashburn (caeralee) | 5 comments I figured it out :) and I'm not sure WHY it posted twice lol!

message 31: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 1219 comments Mike, here are my choices for you The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand . I hope you like one of these choices. I read the last two and loved them. Happy Reading!

message 32: by Arielle Rae (last edited Dec 15, 2014 07:23PM) (new)

Arielle Rae Aguilar | 161 comments Lanie, here are my recommendations. Hope you like them! (as you can see I went overboard)

PNR:
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh (saw that it was on your to-read shelf too) This is an amaaaaaazing series! Highly recommended! One of my all time favorite series and author. The world building is one of the best and the romance is always very well done to say the least :D
Great characters
Really worth reading
Fantasy Lover (Dark-Hunter companion novel) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Another great series with a lot of overarching plots, plus there's some swoon worthy heroes in there~ *coughcoughTheTwinscoughcough*
No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole Fudge, this author can write some really hot scenes and strong, tough heroines... A delight to read the IAD series :D
The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter Another PNR staple... Plus, the latest one was just released yay! (or Wicked Nights (Angels of the Dark, #1) by Gena Showalter Jewel of Atlantis (Atlantis, #2) by Gena Showalter by the same author)
I know you said no BDB, but have you tried the Fallen Angels series, starting with Covet (Fallen Angels, #1) by J.R. Ward by the same author?

UF:
Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh Okay she's one of my favorite authors because anything she writes is pure gold
Has a sexy sexy Alpha ;)
Queen of Shadows (Shadow World, #1) by Dianne Sylvan great UF read
On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews a mix of UF and PNR, and it's really good! You could also read other books by the same author

Other:
Anything byKristen Ashley is the bomb! Everything is absolute fun to read! She mainly writes contemporaries (recommend to start with this series Rock Chick (Rock Chick, #1) by Kristen Ashley ), but she also writes Fantasy Romance Wildest Dreams (Fantasyland, #1) by Kristen Ashley and PNR Until the Sun Falls from the Sky (The Three, #1) by Kristen Ashley
Lots of strong sassy women in these books
If you want a steamy steamy read try Cherise Sinclair's Master of the Shadowlands series, or her Wild Hunt Legacy, which is PNR

If you want a strong female MC, I have to say that Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy, #1) by Jacqueline Carey has one of the strongest out there... It's an epic fantasy romance and is phenomenal imo

Sorry, I became too excited and went waaay over 3 books, but I hope you find one you like :)
Don't hesitate to tell me if you want some more/less/different recommendations

Happy reading and Merry Christmas~

Catherine | 23 comments hi Monica...I'm your Santa :) here are a few recs for you:)

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare ...I really enjoyed this series...I am up to the final book. you also may enjoymthe "prequel" series.. Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare

I saw you read some Dan Brown....thought you might enjoy these as well..

Codex 632 by José Rodrigues dos Santos , The Reincarnationist (Reincarnationist, #1) by M.J. Rose ..this is a good historical fiction series.

also saw some Nora Roberts...I enjoyed this series Dark Witch (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts , but you might also enjoy some of her others... Born in Fire (Born In, #1) by Nora Roberts , and Sea Swept (Chesapeake Bay Saga #1) by Nora Roberts

hope you like my pics for you :)

Lanie (Lanies Book Thoughts) (lanieadamsk) | 28 comments Hi Amy:D These are my recs for you!

I saw you like C.L. Wilson and think you'd really like this one: The Winter King (Weathermages of Mystral, #1) by C.L. Wilson

For a PNR read, I think you may really like this series Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken , it's funny with crazy female heroines:) Also, Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison - I saw this on your list and it's good!

As for Urban Fantasy, I'm hoping you may like one of these:
The Light Who Shines (Bluebell Kildare, #1) by Lilo Abernathy , Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow -I saw you like Kim Harrison and Saintcrows writing reminds me a lot of her stuff, a bit darker tho! Sealed with a Curse (Weird Girls, #1) by Cecy Robson , A Cat's Chance in Hell (Hellcat, #1) by Sharon Hannaford

If you want some more recs or something different just let me know:D Lots more books out there!! Have fun reading!

message 37: by Mike (new)

Mike | 353 comments Veronica here are my suggestions for you.
Alone (The Girl in the Box, #1) by Robert J. Crane , Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, #1) by Devon Monk , and The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss #1) by Marjorie M. Liu . All three of these series have strong female leads and action. Alone is marketed toward YA but I disagree with that it is a mature book. The other two series have romance elements in them as well.
As a bonus suggestion there is this Crimson Night (Night, #1) by Marie Hall . This one has a strong female lead and action but I would say it is closer to PNR and some of the material is more adult in nature.

message 38: by Betelgeuze (new)

Betelgeuze | 158 comments Hi Jennifer

I find it hard to just pick three books, so I went for 3 books in 3 genres. Here are my recommendations for you.

Urban fantasy:

Crimes Against Magic (Hellequin Chronicles, #1) by Steve McHugh A Madness of Angels (Matthew Swift, #1) by Kate Griffin and I saw you had this one on your to read shelf: Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep

I don't read so much paranormal romance and I saw you already read one of my favourites the Dark-Hunter series. These are some other books you might like:

PNR:
Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter

Fantasy:
Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels #1) by Anne Bishop Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, #1) by Lynn Flewelling The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch

Veronica (readingonthefly) Hi Arielle Rae,

Here are my suggestions for you.

Urban Fantasy (all have smart, down-to-earth heroines; also subtle romantic threads running through the story):
Urban Shaman (Walker Papers, #1) by C.E. Murphy , Rosemary and Rue (October Daye #1) by Seanan McGuire

Science Fiction (smart heroine, romance on the side):
Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre

Fantasy (rich world building and interesting magic system):
Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson

Historical Mystery (male protagonist, sort of a cross between Mr. Darcy and James Bond; some romance):
What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr, #1) by C.S. Harris

Pick any three you want. I loved them all.

Veronica (readingonthefly) Amy and Mike,

I'll happily take two Secret Santas. More books for me! *grin* Thanks for the great suggestions and since you both recommend Magic to the Bone, I'll start with that one.

message 41: by Roxy the Fury (new)

Roxy the Fury (roxythefury) For Zippymae:

Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet, #1) by Orson Scott Card Saw this on your TBR list. This book was so good the movie, of course, didn't do it justice.

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee Another good one, kinda dystopian, but very very good.

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Another awesome series with a kickass, no holds barred heroine.

I hope you enjoy your picks.

Jennifer Ashburn (caeralee) | 5 comments Thank you betelgeuze!
I've downloaded crimes against magic to start with! Have a 10 hour drive coming up this weekend so I should plow through it and on to the next
Oh and I already had Spiders Bite downloaded to read :) so those are my 2 top picks

message 43: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Ashburn (caeralee) | 5 comments Hi Dawn :)
I've been looking through your shelves and we've already read a LOT of the same books which has made this harder! Here are a couple selections I think you would enjoy
A Gift of Ghosts fantasy/paranormal with a strong female lead. As an added bonus, if you use amazon kindle this book is currently one of the free dealio's!
Priceless Another strong female lead more Urban based, an 8 book series and this one also may be currently free through amazon kindle
Storm Born pretty good female lead cross with real world and fantasy (I liked this series because at one point they end up in my town which was pretty awesome haha)
And last but not least, I saw that you have First Confessor as a to-read but you haven't read this major series and I feel that you should read at least the Sword of Truth series before the Magda Searus series to fully grasp who she is and what she did sooo...Wizard's First Rule which is complete fantasy with a male lead, very darkly written with a lot of fight scenes and gore but with a strong sense of whats right and what a person should strive to stand for
Hopefully you like something I suggested, please let me know if you don't!

Lots of great choices. I actually have read Stormborn and I totally loved that one. Thanks for pointing out Wizard's First Rule.

Now for my choices I am torn between A Gift of Ghosts because I love ghost stories and it feels like it has been ages since I read a good one. Then there is Priceless which I see over and over again.

I will let you know which one I choose though Thanks for the good recs!!
