Hellcat #1

A Cat's Chance in Hell

Rate this book
If the Demon Master gets his way
the City is about to become Hell on Earth.

Gabi has some extraordinary talents. Some might call them supernatural, but for her they’re just part of everyday life. What she knows about the supernatural would give most humans nightmares forever. Ridding the streets of bad-ass creatures of the night is Gabi’s other job. Taking up the mantle of her father’s legacy, she is a Hunter for the Malus Venatori. If she had a choice it would be her only job, but a girl has to make a living, right?

Being ambushed and kidnapped by the sinfully sexy Master Vampire of the City should have been just another night on the job, except for the fact that Julius has other plans for her. When he reveals that his nemesis wants control of the City and has plans to fill it with Demons from the Etherworld, creating an army of Ghouls and turning humans into nothing more than cattle to feed his Clan, Gabi must choose her path. She must decide whether to join with Julius in a stand against the Demon Master or flee the City with her friends and family, leaving the Vampires to wage their own war and the rest of the residents to their fate.

But it’s not in Gabi’s nature to back down from a fight, no matter how impossible the odds. As the Malus Venatori prepare for war, Gabi finds herself pulled deeper into Julius’s world and makes some disturbing discoveries about her unusual supernatural abilities. Her existence might just be the answer to a mystery as old as the Vampire race. Even more unsettling than that is her undeniable attraction to Julius and the taste of his blood. But before she can come to terms with her conflicting desires they must all survive the Demon onslaught and find a way to safeguard the truth of her heritage.

While the supernatural bad guys know her as Angeli Morte, her friends call her Hellcat!

If you like your heroine smart, sassy and absolutely kick-ass and your Vampire hero sexy as sin and twice as dangerous you’re going to want to read the hellcat series.

This is a classic UF story with a tough-as-nails heroine who likes to fight.

Certain parts of the book were very good. I liked the plot and the world-building and the characters were OK (though Gabi isn't as likeable as some UF heroines), but I had issues with the author's writing style.

There is a huge amount of info-dumping early on. Now, if an author has a big info-dump and moves on, and the story is good elsewhere, I can live with that just fine. But Sharon Hannaford is very guilty of 'telling' rather than 'showing'. I couldn't help but notice it, and once I did, it was everywhere in this story.

For instance, we get this ...
"Can I do some normal work, at least?" [Gabi] demanded. "I do need to make a living somehow."
Ian and Kyle both snorted at her last comment. She knew it was because she was independently wealthy enough to never have to work another day in her life.
And this ...
Byron was used to being the most mature person in the organisation he'd helped to found, being almost venerated for his wisdom and experience, and he'd just had to think about the fact that Julius was more than four times as old as he was...
You don't tell readers what a character 'just had to think about'. You convey it through an expression on their face or have them stutter a few words or whatever. And Gabi thinking on what 'she knew' about her wealth. Stop 'telling' me what characters are thinking or feeling. Show me!

This book had a lot of potential and parts of it were very enjoyable, but I found the author's style continually pulled me out the story and that spoiled my enjoyment somewhat.

Despite demon attacks, uneasy alliances and a potential romance on the cards I'm spending a great deal of time being very bored with this book. The story has potential to be a generic kick-arse heroine UF entry, but I think it needs the help of a good professional editor and some reworking to make it shine.

A lot of my problems came down to being told and not shown what was happening as well as massive and often inappropriately placed info-dumps. I found this very disappointing because it limited my connection to what could have been an interesting world whilst at the same time robbing me of any and all mystery to entice me to keep reading to discover more. The writing itself is also clunky and repetitive using very little descriptive power and a whole lot of stating what is going on.

In spite of the many problems and the fact it took me days to finish a fairly simple and straight forward read that usually takes me less than a day, I do find myself wondering what the future holds for Gabi. I'm not going to rush out and get the second installment, but I may get around to it at some point and that's extremely rare for a book I've labelled as 2 stars.

It has been a while since I've found a new Urban Fantasy series that I feel is truly interesting enough to be considered a new favorite. Yet, that is exactly what I've found with "A Cat's Chance in Hell." It is has a strong female herione, a unique plot, plenty of action, mystery, intrigue and hot romance.

Gabrielle is part human and vampire due to an accident prior to her birth. Her pregnant mother was attacked by a vampire but before she could be killed another vampire intervened killing the assailant. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, some vampire blood was ingested by Gab's mom. So, Gab developed the hearing of vampire, accelerated healing, greater strength and the ability to converse and control animals. Her occupation during the dame is an animal whisperer so to speak but at a moments call she world for an organization who monitors and control supernatural rogues.

Kyle is Gab's best friend. He too is a hybrid but half human and half were. He and Gab are inseparable and any siblings and they work for the organization. While out playing pool, Gab is kidnapped by master vampire, Julius. He only wanted to speak with her; but, one of his minions got a little overzealous so he had to take her. He needs the help of the organization and Gab is he is to thwart a hostile takeover by a rogue vampire who is dead set on unseating him from power and unleashing demons into our world. If this happens, humans will be nothing more that happy meals on legs.

As Julius and Gab begin working together to fight the demons they also learn to trust each other. It is clear that they are developing more than just the status of colleagues. Their relationship is hot and sizzles like bacon in a skillet!!!! Yum!

I really enjoyed this read and the writing style of the author. At first, I thought the book needed some editing due to misspellings but then I begin to realize that the author is probably British and is using the British spellings of words. I enjoyed the fast paced plot and the wonderful world building. The antagonist had just the right amount of vileness and I loved the gentlemanly nature of Julian. Thanks to my goodreads' friend, Tiffany for recommending this book. I can't wait to red the next book in the series.

This ebook had decent reviews and kept coming up on my Amazon recommended list. All the stars warranted a try and so I down loaded the sample... and sat on it. I finally grew desperate enough after weeks of seeing it on my home page to give it a go. After a boring start I was debating giving up on this book. I was now past a fight scene and over 17% in. Yet, I was not connecting to any of the characters or plot. That's not to say the 2 main characters h/Gabrielle or BFF Kyle the wolf were unlikeable. I was just not invested, instead I was just gliding through waiting for something to happen, preferably something of interest, something to reel me in. As soon as Julius made an appearance I immediately sat up and took notice. He seemed to take over the whole story. HE was worth finishing the book in one sitting (for me).
Forget Gold "Jewels" is @ the end of my rainbow.

Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting book two in the hellcat series, I believe it is scheduled to be released in November. I'd recommend this book, after the initial few chapters it had a steady moving plot, great supporting roles, my favorite being Kyle and Alexander. Let's not forget our protagonist. The main female character Gabrielle is kick ass, uncompromising, competent, and not overly concerned with morals which I found refreshing in this genera.

FYI: Comments have been made advising of grammatical and spelling errors. Please know this ebook is not written in American English. This may have caused a few double takes. Gripes involving the ending have also been made by a few reviewers. The ending in this book is not exactly a HEA nor is it a traditional cliff hanger. If you require your ending tied up in a neat tidy box (no unresolved issues and all your questions answered) this book does not have it. This is a series and as such the major plot line was resolved adequately but the subplot and romance is left open ended. A continuing story arc is necessary in a series.

A Cat's Chance In Hell will give you everything you expect from a book with vampires, werewolves, and various magical people fighting bad paranormals. Most of the usual character traits are there as well as many common plot points. Our heroine, Gabi, is somewhat of a special snowflake, but I guess that is why this is her book and not someone else's.

Here are a few elements that raise this book above the basic premise and writing style.
1- Gabi is dominant and stays that way. She leads groups of soldiers and there is no suggestion that she should let a man protect her.
2- This is dark fantasy and people get quite beat up.
3- The first time the heroine comes in contact with the reality of her love interest's need to drink blood she is grossed out. She gets over this pretty quickly as a function of her snowflake development.
3- The love interest, Julius, genuinely cares. You can see it. In most books of this sort you rely on the author to tell you he cares since you can't tell by the love interest's words or actions. That alone makes this book different. Julius is the tough, sometimes brutal, leader of the local vampire clan.
4- Every time I was expecting the usual plot hole, one of the characters would point it out and they would work out a solution. Unfortunately, there is a massive, very common plot hole at the very end of the book, but maybe it will be resolved in the next one.

A Cat's Chance In Hell doesn't end in a cliffhanger, but the characters' stories aren't over and there is a clear lead in to the next book.

This novel has a good story line and enough world-building to make me appreciate it. It's nothing new, but rather a "melting pot" of things deja read. Still its pace makes it easy to read.

The best part of it: the cat Razor, 20 kgs of fur and folly. Can I have him, pretty please? You can keep the vamps :D

The real weak point: info-dumping. If you download the sample (as I did) you'll notice that at the beginning of the story the good guys are ready for a mission. When they get to the right place, one of the characters starts thinking about the heroine. This flashback covered her entire lifespan. Rather than remembering when they met, he told all her story. (He should have been dead if the remembering in the middle of a battle had been real :) From that onward the dump is less evident, but it's there nonetheless.

The characters aren't flat at all, but may need some depth. They still lack the sparkle that makes them unforgettable (or at least real). The bad guy was particularly bland, too.

My very humble and uncalled for opinion is the author has potential and need only a good professional editor that could point her towards her strength and help with the weakness. (Loving brothers are good, but lack the professional tag :P)

The book is sold at 2.99. Buy it, if you are intrigued, and let the other readers know what you think.

This story begins when Gabi ends up getting ambushed by a group of vampires who wish for her to see their master. Things get a little bit more weird then that when the vampire master doesn't actually want to hurt her, no he wants to use her for something else. Now, Gabi and her friends must help keep the city from being taken over by a crazy vampire, and some demons. But it's all in a days work for Gabi..

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I was actually a little weary of reading it due to the blurb, but it turned out to be really very good. Gabi was an extremely brave, and fierce heroine. She's probably one of the most kick ass heroines I've ever read about. And then the vampire hero was pretty awesome too. I loved getting to see them together, and I also enjoyed getting to see different points of view from the book as well. This was a good start to this series, and I look forward to reading more in it.

85 points/100 (4 ½ stars/5)

Gabrielle Bradford is a hunter, part of an organization that hunts bad little demons, vampires, werewolves and other supernaturals, but she is also dhampir. One night, she is ambushed by the terribly sexy master vampire, Julius, who is looking for their help. He has another master looking to take over the city, which normally shouldn't be their problem. This new master, however, isn't looking to take over the city from just Julius but to fill it with demons and ghouls.

This book is hilarious, but unintentionally. For whatever reason, this book just kind of got me. I enjoyed the hell out of myself reading it. I was amused at first, but by the end I was deeply entrenched in the story. I am so anxiously looking forward to finishing writing this review so I can go and read the next one (I don't like finishing the first book in the series and starting the next without getting the review done for the first).

Here's the thing though.

This was not written well by any means.

Just..hear me out.

I have read a lot of books I would consider bad recently. I thought I was completely at my limit with them and the next one I picked up I was going to DNF because I just couldn't take another one. I should probably rate this lower than I have, because the ending was so rough, but I can't bring myself to because I loved it. Yet somehow, this transcended bad and I was incredibly entertained by it. Like, everything amused me about it. It wasn't well put together, by any means. At first I couldn't even keep straight who was who or what was even going on. Yet somehow, even though everything about it was bad, it somehow was entertaining.

In the beginning of the book, the writing itself is actually really not up to par. We're dumped in the middle of one scene for the first chapter of the book without any explanation, and somehow that scene ends and we move into the middle of another scene that starts and still nothing explained. Then, just as we're about to go into a battle, we're dumped into the middle of a flashback section before unceremoniously dumped back out to the beginning of a battle. We seem to jump perspectives and between modes of time. One moment it seems to be talking about the present, one moment it seems to be talking about the past. We switch between being inside a single person's head and talking about group actions. All of this between one sentence and the next.

That is just the first 10% of the book - honestly and truly I thought I was going to have to quit this book before it ever even started.

Despite it being perhaps one of the worst starts I've seen in quite some times, I was amused by it. I wasn't angry or frustrated or bored with it. I was just pleasantly amused.

The main character, Gabi, is a traditional urban fantasy main character. Angry, hyperactive, young. She likes to kill things that need killing. She is also super dooper special. She is a dhampir, and there is no one else like her.

The love interest, Julius, is hilarious at first, then he grows on me. When this "super sexy" vampire who wants to talk to her kidnaps her I was like "oh, looks like we've found our love interest". It is super predictable. Yet, he grew on me by the end. I like him bunches. It is almost an instant love connection, but not quite. It is almost a bonded romance, but not quite. He literally stands over her while she is passed out after he kidnapped her though, going "oh she looks so young" followed almost immediately by an "oh but I want her". It is unbelievably hilarious. Yet at the end, he is kind, caring, and supportive while being who Gabi needs.

The worldbuild is one of the places this book really falls flat and it doesn't have an amusing counterpart to it. In fact, it even tries to infodump on us - yet there is no actual information in the infodumps. It is skipped over and told to the character, but not to the reader. I was left scratching my head over this one. The biggest issue I had was I had no idea by the end of the book if the supernatural community was a secret, out in the open, or an open secret. Honestly and truly, I could not figure it out. The way it was worded throughout the book it could have gone any of the three ways.

Lastly, the plot. It isn't overly special. I didn't even know what the book was going to be about for the first quarter of the book. I've seen this sort of story play out a hundred times before. Yet, by the end of the book, Hannaford managed to actually pull it all together. She made it emotional. She made it sound good. I enjoyed it by the end. I'm still not certain where that switch even occurred.

A Cat's Chance in Hell feels like such a contradiction to me. On the one hand it is halfway to being unreadable. On the other hand, I really enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to read the next one. I think if you aren't hating it, you should give it a chance. The end truly isn't as bad as the beginning.

A Cat’s Chance in Hell (The Hellcat Series – Book 1) by Sharon Hannaford
Love ‘old skool’ Anita Blake, the sassy Chloe Neill’s Merit and bad-ass Riley Jenson? Then I have no doubt that you’ll think Gabi is a pretty awesome and equally ruthless heroine and Demon Hunter.
In book one of The Hellcat Series, we are thrown into Gabi’s world of danger and constant action. There’s certainly no rest for a Hellcat! Gabi, the protagonist, is not only a pretty amazing Demon Hunter, but she’s an unusual supe, one that’s set to cause a ripple if the Vamps, Demons and generally every other supe that you can think of, realise what she is.
Gabi is somewhat of an anomaly. She’s not an overly complex character, which is surprisingly refreshing. She works for the SMV which is the organisation whose mission is to protect humankind from the baddy supernaturals; she also daylights in an ordinary job using her extraordinary power that she has with animals. However, she isn’t portrayed as a woman with a desperate desire to fit in with the human world; she’s not desperately trying to be someone she isn’t. In fact, Gabi is refreshingly confident in her own skin, and knows who she is an individual, so there’s no internal battle, no monotonous internal dialogue.
Working alongside her best friend Kyle, who is also a bit of an anomaly himself, the two create a pretty kick-ass team, and have a reputation for being ruthless and successful in their missions. It is when they face a new threat, one that has potentially disastrous consequences on the world, that the danger steps up. It is here that we meet the delectable Julius, the Master vampire of the city.
Gabi and Julius immediately are faced with feelings and desires that neither were prepared for. And so begins their passionate journey. Again, what was refreshing was that their relationship didn’t involve painstaking (pun intended!) over analysis, one that drags on over numerous chapters in similar genre novels.
This novel was very enjoyable. The characters are well crafted and developed and the plot advances at a sound pace with lots of action, a good level of dialogue and a reasonable amount of back story. The novel ends a little frustratingly, as it feels as though it just stops; however, what Sharon Hannaford does is leave the story open for her next instalment, which I believe she is currently working on.
I will be most definitely reading book 2 and will happily give A Cat’s Chance in Hell an impressive 4 stars.

Gabrielle is a hunter for the Malus Venatori killing rogue vampires and werewolves as well as dealing with any demons that enter the city. She is so good at what she does that she is known as Angeli Morte – the angel of death – by the creatures that she hunts, but her friends just call her hellcat. After being kidnapped by the city’s master vampire, Gabi learns that she and the rest of the SMV only have 4 days to save the city from a demon attack and their only chance of survival lies in an alliance with the vampires. In addition to saving the city, Gabi must also discover the full truth of her semi supernatural abilities whilst also fighting her attraction to Julian, the powerful vampire who she is not sure that she can trust.

This book is absolutely incredible! If you love a feisty kick-ass heroine, a swoon worthy hero and a battle between good and evil this is most certainly the book for you. I loved the character of Gabi, Strong, smart and she never gives up. The supporting characters are brilliant too, Kyle is great as the brotherly best friend and I wish I had a cat like razor. The action in this book is exciting and I just couldn’t stop reading. A Cats Chance in hell would be enjoyed by fans of books by Chloe Neill and Jennifer Estep as well as people who love a strong female lead character. I am looking forwards to reading more about these characters in the next book.

Pretty good first book for a series. While the MC has a temper, the main focus is on the action and the story, with very litte melodrama, angst, and inner turmoil. Quite a relief after all the overwrought angsty UF protagonists out there. World building is geographically limited; while the world holds together and is internally consistent, it focuses on a single city, and hand waves the rest of the planet outside Gotham City / Metropolis. In book 3 you even learn indirectly that this city is in England, despite most of the characters talking and acting like Americans.

The writing is tight, and the author avoids excessive exposition unless it is germane to the story. A good example occurs around page 50, when the MC goes home after the In Media Res beginning. Instead of page after page of angst, recriminations, and melodrama about what went wrong, or excruciating detail about her furnishings, house layout, clothing, and body, we get 1 1/2 pages describing her entering her domicile, including the introduction of her pets, followed by a single 8 sentence long paragraph summarizing her thoughts on the night before she falls asleep.

I was shocked. Pleased, but shocked. It didn't feel at all like I was being shown around a furnished house by a real estate agent eager to sell.

I also appreciate that the MC's temper is not used to justify suicidally stupid behavior. In fact, controlling her temper is presented as a struggle she (mostly) wins.

I feel like maybe a few authors have all used the same writing prompt: a woman with special powers and an attitude problem has a law enforcement job and falls in love with the leader of vampires while trying to save humanity from something worse than vampires"... And I don't know which came first, but I read Guild Hunter first so I've been comparing them all to that. Not the worst thing in the world.

Anyhow, this book was quite enjoyable. There were some continuity issues that didn't really matter but made me curious. I loved the demons - the author has a great imagination for making up monsters. As I continue the series, I hope to see more of Gabi's crazy cat beast, I'd like to see her relationship with Julius develop, and more of Kyle. I liked Kyle very much. Shame Athena didn't die, though. :p

I'd recommend this book, but let's see how the rest of the series holds up.

I really enjoyed this book. I consider this a "good find" I came across this book on goodreads and it was a great book. The main character Gabi,is human with special abilites, as well as her best friend kyle. They are part of a group that polices the city against anything supernatural that is a threat to humans and the city. This book has everything you want sexy vanpires (loved julius) weres, mages, demons and a 200 pound housecat named razor. I am really looking forward to the next book.

Thought it had an interesting premise. It had a strong lead female character. But it did something that I did not care for. It had the bad guy kidnap and torture the heroine of the story and she had to be rescued by her boyfriend and best friend, also a guy.

You had this character who was so strong... she should have been the one doing the rescuing.

I stopped reading this book at one stage. The intro chapters introducing the characters and world didn't sit well with me.

I really wanted to give this book 3 stars but I just can’t do it. I’ll explain. I actually really liked the story and came to like the characters as well, but I simply can’t overlook the atrocious editing throughout. Spelling errors and weird sentences that don’t make sense on every single page. It ruined my whole experience.
The book is part of a series but can be read separately. I won’t be reading the next installment though.
Our heroine’s love interest is for once not a dominating douchebag, but a genuinely nice guy who cares. Brownie points for that!
But the villain, oh the villain.. never have I read such a one dimensional, cardboard cutout of a character. Woe is me.

To sum up: a good, solid story with terrible, terrible editing problems, that I just couldn’t get past. But if you don’t mind shaking your head at all the errors, so much you get whiplash, then this is definitely a book for you!

P.s. why does every UF/PNR/fantasy heroine have to have red hair?! It’s getting real old people.

I have standards. And today, they aren't low.
So. dnf.
Or rather, Didn't Even Start.

Between the men, the flashing lights and the pounding music her annoyance gauge was on max and her patience gauge was on zero. Not a good combination. She casually swirled the whiskey and ice around in her glass as she swivelled on her barstool, doing another sweep of the writhing mass of dancers with her supernatural senses. She growled in frustration. Zilch again. She drained her glass and was considering a refill when she felt a small vibration against her left breast. She surreptitiously reached into her bra and pulled out the tiny phone, flicking it open to read the message.

For an urban fantasy indie it really wasn't too bad. Nothing really groundbreaking but the world did pull me in. What the author lacked in dialogue/banter, she made up for with the action scenes and characters you wanted to get to know. I'm hoping the series gets better as it goes.

** I received a free e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review **

Two words...Epically Awesome!!

A Cat's Chance in Hell was one of those books so rich in detail and experience that you would swear you spent the last day in a movie rather than reading a book. Sharon Hannaford makes it so effortlessly easy for her readers to join her world.

This book centers around Gabi. Gabrielle Bradford. Angeli Morte. The Angel of Death. Also known as Hellcat to those in her inner circle. Gabi is part vampire, part human. For her "regular" job she works with animals and when she's not doing that she is a hunter for the SMV, The Societas Malus Ventori. The SMV is a company that was co-founded by her late father and his very good friend Byron who also happens to be a magi. The SMV is a society of shape shifters, magi, and humans who seek out supernatural wrong doers and secretly deal out punishments for said wrong doers. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Gabi is the best at her job. Vampires are no match for her until she meets the Vampire Master, Julius. Not only is he the most powerful vampire that Gabi has ever encountered, he's also the sexiest. Luckily for her she's immune to Vampire control because Julius is about to turn her world upside down.

I don't think I have ever been sucked into a book so hard. In all honesty, the beginning of the book (where you're introduced to all of the characters, the history, various info) was kind of hard to get through for me. It was absolutely necessary though so if you plan on reading this book, push through it. Once Julius's character comes into the story the action kicks in full force and it becomes impossible to put this book down.

The characters were beyond amazing. It would be an insult for me to use phrases like "great characters" or "complex characters". Sharon Hannaford has such a remarkable talent that at some point they stopped being cool characters in a book and they took on a life of their own. It was as if I was lifted out of my living room and deposited into this new world full of vampires (with and without morals), protective werewolves who can slay demons without breaking a sweat but just as easily be my big brother or best friend, magi who could be a second father or the most annoying person on the planet, and kick ass females who cuddle with their cats one minute and kill something the next. It would be very hard for me to pick a favorite character out of the lineup in this book. If I had to, I would probably choose Julius who had far too many good qualities to list or Alexander who was cocky and shifty in the beginning but let you see his softer side the more you got to know him.

Sharon Hannaford was a new to me author when I picked this book up. Not anymore. After reading A Cat's Chance in Hell, I am an insta-fan. I can't wait to start the next book in this kick ass series!

Although this is not the most original parnormal novel out there, it's very good.

The fantasy aspect was mostly in the range of creatures as opposed to or in addition to worldbuilding. At first, I thought I had read it before because it felt so familar. I was well into the third chapter when the characters took center stage and I knew I hadn't encountered them before. It's urban fantasy with a healthy dose of romance. I like the blend. This is not YA although if one were to skip the one sex scene, it could work. The mystery is not really a mystery in and of itself, it's more the enjoyment of the chase to the finish line.

The heroine, Gabi, was a hunter with abilities that did not fit into any specific mold. Her mother was exposed to vampire blood while she was in the womb. No one really knew if this was the reason she was so 'special' but it was what everyone ran with. In all fairness, there are many heroes in this story including Gabi's best friend Kyle, a werewolf who happended to be born under the same situation. His mom was bitten when he was in the womb too. They met in highschool and became closer than family, always having the other's back. Gabi's love interest is a vampire names Julius. He is the master vampire of a clan which the antagonist is trying to unseat. He and Gabi quickly grew into a power couple I could get behind.

The hunters are made up of a hodge-podge of supernaturals including magicals and weres. There are demons that aren't playing for team 'Save Humanity'. The mystery of how and why the demons are coming to this world is tied to a vampire power struggle. The hunters are unaware of this power struggle because the vamps are not part of their little club of good guys. Well, that changes when hell literally spills over into their lap.

Sharon Hannaford did a very good job of bringing the characters to life. There was plenty of action and the plot was fast paced. This story does not tax the brain or the imagination but it's fun. Sometimes that's enough to get me invested in the concept as a series. I would not hesitate to read the next one. There are a few typos but they are few and far between so I wasn't irked. It became clear that the author is probably a Brit when she referred to the hood of a car as a bonnet. There were a few other places where the lingo crossed the pond but it's not too evident. It's four stars for me for entertainment value, characters, plot speed, and a clean ending.

I really enjoyed the storyline/premise of this book. There were a few major problems with this book though.

1. The editing. There were SO many mistakes. It started to really bug me because a lot of the sentences weren't grammatically clear/correct. There were lots of times where sentences included parts of other sentences... for example- He looked at on the side her and saw that she was happy... This happened a lot. Not that specific example, just that sort of thing.

2. All of the pointless, pointless extras. This book was WAY to long for the actual storyline. It was just too much detail for every little thing. It became cumbersome.

3. POV- so the POV is third person omniscient. But it wasn't very well done. The author seemed like she wanted everyone's POV included and this just took so much away from the storyline. This is one of the main reasons I think it became too long. Having the POV include emotional reactions, motivations, and observations of every character no matter how minor was a real snooze fest for me.

4. As I said before, I really enjoyed the story/characters. However, at times it felt like the characters would have been better served if this were written from first person POV. We spend a lot of time having facts about the characters jammed down our throats from the perspective of other characters. The whole time I just thought, "man, It'd be nice to learn about this character more organically instead of this weird, forced fact finding mission we've been manipulated to endure..." This happened even just from a world building standpoint. In the beginning Kyle goes off on a mini history lesson that was completely unnecessary for the storyline and lasted forever. The narrator gives the excuse that as they drove, Kyle remembered the history surrounding the place. (not a direct quote cause I'm too lazy). This is the kind of sloppy character/place building we're given and it sucks pretty hard.

I probably will not continue reading this series just because I can't stand to spend 6 more hours of my life wading through cumbersome grammar/wording and "fact vomit" disguised as "character development".

What a great story. I have to say that my favorite female lead character right now is Gabi. I love her fearless attitude and her fearless loyalty to those she loves. She's like any other woman who's sensitive but doesn't let anyone push her around or take advantage of her.

I love it when I read a supernatural story that has a different take on the supernatural. I'm sure there are other books out there similar to this one but this is the first I've read of its kind and I'm happy about that. Gabi is a human with supernatural powers. Her powers are vampire like but she's no vampire. She has great senses, natural and beyond. She can control and communicate with animal telepathically. She super swift and has an array of martial arts skills under her belt.

This story takes on a ride of good versus evil. Gabi works with an organization that fights evil or rogue supernatural creatures. In order to save the city of total destruction, Gabi must team up with the most of unlikely supernatural being she'd ever thought she'd team up with, vampires. Unless there's a rogue vampire that needs destroying, they are likely left a lone. In working with the vampires, Gabi falls for a Vampire Master, Julius. Yum...

As the ending neared, I found myself crying and rooting for Gabi and her team. While I was excited through out the story and knew the ride was great, the ending stopped me short. The story just ended abruptly. Perhaps a cliffhanger since this is part of a series? I'm not sure. I do hope that the second book resolves something that I wanted resolved. All in all, this is a story that was wonderful. It had adventure, awesome fight scenes, a great, strong female lead character, swoon worthy men, and worthy adversaries.

Do I recommend this book? I do. If you like the supernatural and want something a bit different, I do.

Hi BookLuvrs,

Let’s fall into the world of Gabi (Hellcat). I really enjoy when the first book in a series is exciting, funny, kick-ass, sexy and more! Sharon gives us all the above in this installment. I truly really enjoyed the heroine Gabi in this installment. She is very sassy with a kick-ass attitude to go with it and back it up. She is very smart and takes no crap from anyone. And to go with that kick-ass attitude she has these amazing talents.
She is considered a hunter for the Malus Venatori that hunts down bad vampires of the night. And let me tell you she enjoys every moment of being a hunter. But she is not alone on the job; she has her best friend Kyle (who is a werewolf) that has been with her as long as she can remember. They have this amazing friend/brother sister chemistry between them two.

Then one night she encounters an ambushed and is kidnapped by the sexy Master vampire of the city. She thinks he want something else from her, but little does he know he has other plans for her. And when I say other plans, I not only mean plans for her to help him because of a threat to his city, but he is very interested in her physically. They both seem to have this undeniable attraction to each other.

Julius has these amazing powers that Gabi has never encountered before. And it’s a reason why he is the Master Vampire of the city, because he exudes power.

This installment has set up the next one to come. I’m very excited to continue on to read the next book. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen between Gabi and Julius.

Until Next Time Happy Reading.
