Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4735 comments CASTING CALL
Duration: October 1, 2019 - December 31, 2019

Before the Director can call "Lights, Camera, Action!", the actors need to be cast. For this quarterly challenge, your favourite actor(s) will have starring roles in the books you read.

-- Choose an actor/actress and read books featuring characters they have played and/or roles you would like them to play. You can reuse the same character, if say they appear in a series, but each book should only be counted once. It is also up to you if you focus on just one actor or choose a few.
For example: David Tennant
Barty Crouch Junior in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Crowley in Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
The Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who: The Stone Rose and Doctor Who: The Krillitane Storm
The Riddler (fancast) in Batman: Five Riddles for Robin

-- Alternatively, for each book read during this challenge, choose an actor for the main character(s). If the book has already been made into a movie/TV series/theatre production/radio drama, feel free to use the actual actors if you agree with the choice. Otherwise, you can use your very own dream cast.
Example:
His Majesty's Dragon with Benedict Cumberbatch as Captain Laurence and Eddie Redmayne as Temeraire (dream cast)
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West with Idina Menzel as Elphaba (actual original Broadway cast)

Post below if you would like to take part and let's see which actors pass their auditions to become the stars of your books.

SarahKat will be leading this challenge. Thanks!

oshizu | 5762 comments I just don't watch enough TV/cable these days to consider any of the more recent screen stars to fancast. So I shall pick one actress and one actor whom I've admired since, well, for many years.

Please me up for 5 books.

Progress: 5/5

Matt Macfadyen (I've been a fan since Spooks/MI5)
In the role of Sebastian St. Cyr, a debonair aristocrat, skilled fighter, and good samaritan in Regency England.
✔️1. Why Mermaids Sing
✔️2. Where Serpents Sleep
✔️3. What Remains of Heaven

Sonia Braga in her younger days
Yes, I realize that Sonia Braga is Brazilian rather than Mexican, but I'm not familiar with Mexican screen stars. Sonia Braga, on the other hand, is consistently fabulous.
✔️1. Atl, an Aztecan vampire: Certain Dark Things
✔️2. Casiopea Tun: Gods of Jade and Shadow

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2389 comments Having no TV in my home for 20 years plus the fact I rarely watch any movies or anything else on the computer, this will definitely be a challenge.

Let's say I'll try to complete 2 for this challenge. I'll just take it as it comes and see what I can do about matching actors to books. Since I know few of the younger actors, they will be from the "older crowd"! :)

Carmen | 8125 comments Hola!
Searching in my TBR list for the rest of the year I've found at least 15 books that have already been made into a movie/TV series so after reading the book I'll give my verdict on the casting (if I agree or if I'd chose someone else.)
Furthermore, I'll chose one book each, that ideally woud be interpreted by my all time favourite actor and actress: Daniel Day Lewis and Katharine Hepburn.

In Cold Blood
Veinte mil leguas de viaje submarino
The Scapegoat
The Body
The Black Dahlia
Fight Club
La carretera
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Warm Bodies
The Witches of Eastwick
The Godfather
War and Peace
Rojo y negro
El Proceso
Captain Blood: His Odyssey

Book for Katharine Hepburn: False Colours as any female character in the book ✔
Book for Daniel Day Lewis: Treasure Island as Long John Silver✔

Okay, I'll need to do the second suggestion...

1) The Illumination by Kevin Brockmeier
For the fiance of the woman who died: James Franco.
Reading of this character's misdirected coping mechanisms reminded me so much of the totally delinquent juveniles depicted in Franco's mess that was Palo Alto. Then I considered that he would be an excellent choice for this role, IMHO.

2) The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
I think this would translate well into a movie format. I could easily imagine Anne Hathaway playing Stella and a much younger Omar Sharif or Pierce Brosnan playing Michael. Okay, those guys are both so damn handsome and sexy, IMHO!

Diane (diane_g) | 608 comments I am in for fancasting, for 15 books.

Goal: 9/15

1. Remainder
* Unnamed male, main character - Thomas Brodie-Sangster
2. The Nightingale
(this is based solely on their looks, because I've never seen them act)
* Vianne - Lea Seydoux
* Isabelle - Nora Arnezeder
3. The Husband's Secret
* Cecilia - Kylie Minogue
* Tess - Anna Torv (with blue contacts)
* Felicity - Bella Heathcote
4. The Wedding Party
* Maddie - Logan Browning
* Theo - Stephan James
And for fun... (the other two books in the trilogy):
* Alexa - Antoinette Robertson
* Drew - Adam Gregory
* Nikole - Alexandra Shipp
* Carlos - Wilmer Valderrama
5. The Company of Demons
* John Coleman - Liam Neeson
6. Still Life
* Chief Inspector Armand Gamache - a younger Jean Reno
7. A Fatal Grace
* Clara Morrow - Helena Bonham Carter
8. The Cruelest Month
* Jean-Guy Beauvoir - Marc-André Grondin
9. A Rule Against Murder
* Ruth Zardo - Angela Lansbury

The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier by Daphne du Maurier

There are two films based on this book, that I'm aware of, but I only watched the trailers.
I think I prefer Matthew Rhys (2012 film) over Alec Guinnes (1959 film) in the role of John/Jean

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently, #1) by Douglas Adams by Douglas Adams

There are two TV series based on Adam's books: one (2010-2012) starred by Stephen Mangan and one (2016) starred by Samuel Barnett, as the "holistic detective".
Taking into acount that I didn't watch none of the two, I think Mangan resembles more the mental image I made of Svlad Cjelli, aka Dirk Gently, than Barnett.

SarahKat | 6219 comments 2. Bird Box by Josh Malerman
I liked the Netflix adaptation with Sandra Bullock. I'd agree with that casting.
3. Dracula by Bram Stoker
For nostalgia's sake I'll agree with the casting on both 90's movies (one being a Mel Brooks parody)
4. Watership Down by Richard Adams. Peter Capaldi on the Netflix adaptation and also the audio is great

El cuerpo by Stephen King by Stephen King

Stand by Me is a 1986 American coming-of-age film directed by Rob Reiner and starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell. The film is based on Stephen King's 1982 novella The Body. Its title is derived from Ben E. King's song, which plays over the ending credits.

Wonderful book and wonderful film. I think the cast is perfect, I would not make any change.

False Colours by Georgette Heyer False Colours by Georgette Heyer

I think this book never hit the stage, but while reading it, I couldn't help imagining the three main female characters played by Katharine Hepburn as she was growing older:
As Cressy, when she was younger (as when she starred Bringing up Baby)
As Lady Denvill, when she was of middle age (as in The African Queen)
As Lady Stavely, when she was older (as in The Lion in winter)

There are a lot of adaptations of this book into movies, I think the one everybody has in mind is, possibly, the 1935 film starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Maybe it's time for a remake, my ideal couple would be Henry Cavill as Peter Blood (dark and with sapphire blue eyes) and Lily Collins as Arabella Bishop (with reddish brown hair and big hazel eyes.)
