I could probably go on for awhile for the best section but the worst was hard. Insomnia I really didn't enjoy and there are a couple of King books I didn't not finish but I need to go back and reread to really say if I don't like them. So my worst list will only contain one.

That's how I felt about Joyland. I liked it but was guilty of judging a book by its cover.

message 23: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 220 comments Exactly, Katherine. I was really looking forward to a scary book, I felt a bit cheated. That being said, I think Joyland is a great story. IIRC it made me cry!

E. | 242 comments I see "The Long Walk" in many lists, and I've read numerous reviews on several different book sites. Folks either really like it or really, really (really...) hate it. I'm wondering if only big SK fans are the ones who end up appreciating it because it is SK.
I haven't yet read it, it's on the 'to read' list because of this thread. Just wondering why it's readers are so polarized.

I think many people are offended by the idea of the book. It doesn't seem all that ridiculously far fetched to me, but people have told me it is. Many people also feel it is simply too violent. I don't agree. Nothing is described in gory detail. As a matter of fact, the unadorned statement of the deaths (and how and why they are caused) is a big part of why the book is so appealing to me.

When an author describes horrific events and or actions in such a matter of fact way I find it more terrifying.

message 34: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 76 comments I think that the long walk is NOT a "King's fun club" book. So really I didn't like it because it is King but because it is meaningful literature , a great story ,thrilling and yet symbolic about agony, fight, fear, strength , determination and humanism. Don't miss it, don't "let go".

The Long Walk is one of the first books King wrote, it's not usually listed with his other works... it's an early Bachman Book. That said, I thought it was one of his very best, I thought that was only my opinion and was very happy and surprised to see that so many here agreed.

I read the Long Walk in the Hospital back in 2010. For some reason, my memory of it's blurry, I think because of the change of scenery? I just wasn't used to reading in a hospital bed so it was distracting but I hope to read it again. All I remember is some boy who loves jelly sandwiches.. Hahaha

Read me two times | 56 comments I've left all Bachman books for last, so I've already read enough SK books to know which I liked or not. And I totally love The long walk. Although it's one of the first works, written in his teens, it's full of the SK spirit, as I like to say...he can go deep in human souls and feelings so well that you almost can't breath at some lines...I was really into it and I'm sorry I've read it so late..

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

It looks like some of these books will make both the best and worst list.
