No, but it still crosses 50% if you remove goblin green and just include fruit salad and the other two brighter greens. Also, who names these greens?

Edit: Jenny apparently has answered my question on naming before I asked it

Color seems good to me. Also, book sounds highly entertaining.

Jen | 206 comments The question is, does this book Mosquitoland by David Arnold
work for Group 2 task iv?

We have two possible arguments.
1. If the girl is holding a laptop (which is what it looks like to us), then laptops get very hot. The one on my lap right now is burning my legs.
2. If she is not, then she is on top of a moving bus, which must have a very hot engine, engine parts, etc. The point is, there would be many things on said bus that would burn you if you touched them.
What is the verdict, folks? Are there hot things on this cover?

message 57: by Alysa (last edited Aug 26, 2019 01:44PM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Seems like a pretty big stretch. I don't think the laptop counts (if it is a laptop and not a book), and for the bus I think it would actually have to show an engine...

message 58: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I would have to agree with Alysa on that. Doesn't seem particularly hot.

message 59: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Would this work for Group 2, Task 3 (Read a book with something nasty on the cover (open to interpretation) and that contains the word LEMON in the text or title)? Includes a skull and cross-bones (bones being nasty). Lemon Meringue Pie Murder

message 60: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments If I found those little bones in my pie, I would consider it nasty.

message 61: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 271 comments You can tell it's a moving bus, though. If it was stationary it wouldn't work, but being that it's moving I do think it would work for hot.

We need more people to weigh in, though.

message 62: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments An engine getting hot would make the "hood" of the bus hot as well. I do think it's a bit of a stretch but I will say yes it works

Plus skull and bones usually means death or poison, so I would also say it's nasty

Well you have Mods plus 2 people here saying no, and another person saying "it's a bit of a stretch but yes". I think the scales are weighed.
And the item on the cover is not even a "hood" of a bus, like Jessi just said, but an entire bus, and one that doesn't even have a hood visible at all. It's one of those flat-front buses.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Jen wrote: "Nobody else thinks a laptop is hot? You guys need to tell me what you're using. My MacBook does actually burn my legs if I use it for more than 15 minutes."

Still seems like a stretch as a generally hot item, plus that doesn't even look like a laptop to me. Looks like she's just reading a notebook or a journal. :/

message 67: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments It looks like she's holding a journal and a backpack is sitting in front of her

message 68: by Jen (new)

Hp Spectre. I use it for hours and it doesn't get uncomfortably hot (no more than when I use my mobile phone). Maybe time to upgrade your laptop? ;)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Ok coming to the thread here for opinion as the mods have said we can petition...

This was the message on our thread -- "We aren't convinced that is a hot desert (clouds, for a start, plus deserts aren't automatically hot, just dry. eg Antarctica is a desert, or Atacama desert: is warm rather than scorchio).
The mods are open to interpretation with what is hot, but don't agree this fits the task. To avoid burned feet, please take your case to the other players in THIS thread. If you find support, then you can PM us to reverse the damage"

I used The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor for the HOT task SZ2iii - claiming the desert as hot. They questioned whether this fit the task as not all deserts are hot. I see this as a hot desert in part because I know there are volcanic rock (volcano also hot) sections of the desert from the book. I don't see clouds so much as I see a brewing sandstorm which again indicates hot desert to me. I honestly didn't even know deserts could be not hot. The two seemed synonymous to me. Thoughts everyone?

message 73: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i would say that a laptop has the potential to be hot but that hot is not its default state [unless it is very old lol]. and really almost everything has the potential to be hot if you set it on fire so that is kind of a slippery slope ;)

I know that Antarctica is technically a desert, but it doesn't look like this. This looks like all the hot deserts in all the movies, with the sand dunes. And I buy that as a sandstorm, not a rainstorm. It seems to be day. It looks like it's getting dark, which would be what would make me question it, since most deserts get pretty cold at night. I would say yes.

message 75: by Shanna_redwind (new)

Shanna_redwind | 598 comments I would say that sand deserts like this are commonly considered hot during the day, so this should be considered hot.

message 76: by Shanna_redwind (new)

Shanna_redwind | 598 comments I agree with the skull and crossbones in the pie being nasty.

I can't agree with the bus cover having something hot hot.

message 77: by Lexi (last edited Aug 26, 2019 09:10PM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments There are many cold deserts. I worked in one in Mongolia that was a sand dessert and very cold at times. Is there a quote in the book that talks about the desert on the cover? Also, are they current active volcanoes or just volcanic rock, which can be very old and cold?

Even though it is in a delicious Lemon Meringue Pie the title also indicates that the pie is used in a murder therefore I would consider the cross bones being nasty as it could represent poison.

I also only see a journal in the girls hand therefore the laptop burning her lap will not fit.

Buses can be very hot places (without aircon) and it looks like there are a lot of passengers in the bus making the character go on to the roof. She is however wearing a sweater so this does not indicate hot to me.

You are my team mate so my answer may seem biased.

I agree with many of the comments that deserts can be cold at times particularly at night or in winter. Some deserts are also considered only warmish. but generally most deserts are considered arid, dry, moistureless, dried up, parched, scorched, burnt, hot, burning or torrid places

The cover does indicate a sand desert and not a snow one like Antarctica. The characters are also not wearing very heavy gear which would indicate a very cold climate. On the audio book edition cover you can see the characters shielding their eyes from dust (not rain) swept up by the wind.

Perhaps there is a passage in the book that will assist others to come to a definite answer with regards to the book

message 81: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments The book does talk about the volcanic plains that lead to the desert which are active volcanos. I always looked at the desert as further extension of that arid land that they crossed from the active part which flowing hot lava to the further away dried up but still hot.

It is kind of a nice clean dagger, maybe if it had blood?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Dale, I'm using the latest BDB Blood Truth (Black Dagger Legacy, #4) by J.R. Ward for this task. My interpretation I put to the group was a dagger is pretty nasty especially when it's in someone's gut. It was approved by two people and no rejects so I think you could use your book.

Aren't daggers always nasty? I mean, what reason do you have a dagger other than to stick it into people/things that probably don't want to be stuck with a dagger? Seems pretty nasty to me. :)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Melissa wrote: "For group 2 SafeZone, task 1 if the Book title is Jack & Louisa Act One, can I use the d in the “and” represented by the ampersand?"

I would say no, because sometimes there are tasks specifically calling for ampersands in the title, or some such. We can’t use the word “and” to stand in for the ampersand, so it shouldn’t work the other way around either, if that makes sense.

If the majority of editions of the book spell out the word “and” in the title but yours uses an ampersand, then that might be an okay exception, but in this case it looks like there are 3 GR editions and they all have an ampersand.
