Sometimes we can't help ourselves but to overthink a task or question our initial thoughts. We would like you all as players to help each other out with questions around tasks.

If you have a book you think may work for a task, but you aren’t sure, take it to this thread (where the result is binding).

If in doubt, or you don't receive a majority answer, then don't use the book :)

If you have a question about the challenge in general (not "does this book work for....") then check out the FAQ in the questions thread here

Fellow players, do you think that the lighting on this cover is “something hot”?:

Going on this from How stuff Works
With bolt temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun I’d say yes⚡️

Lau Maia | 0 comments Would this be ok as prove for the 4 narrators?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magicians-Ne...

It's a dramatized version of the book and it says "full cast" on amazon

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Thanks!

Real-Life librarian here :)

Unfortunately the only record I could find with any additional information that matches that link points to a version that's not long enough for this challenge. [see if you're able: OCLC #870961616].
There's a list of at least 10 of the narrators, but it's explicitly stated to be abridged and only 115 min long.

message 10: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments But that's ok cause I'm not listening to it, I'm reading the portuguese version, if there's 10 narrators than it should fit the challenge

message 11: by Alysa (last edited Aug 13, 2019 05:06PM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Personally I would say no because it’s not a widely available, unabridged audio version with easily confirmed multiple narrators that anybody can check. Instead it’s a really obscure abridged version. Maybe someone else can answer here if they don’t agree.

message 12: by Alysa (last edited Aug 13, 2019 06:01PM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Wait, if it’s actually as you said in the original post a “dramatized” version of The Magician’s Nephew, not even a pure (even abridged) recording of the book, than that’s an adaptation — basically a play — and not the book itself at all. The “narrators” are the cast of actors doing line reading. So that definitely does not work for the task at all.

Sorry I didn’t quite register that “dramatized” part in the first place.

Off the top of my head:
- The Illuminae Files series
- The Themis Files series
- Lincoln in the Bardo (I've heard mixed things about this one as an audio experience though)
- Sadie

Beth | 1659 comments Is this a better place to ask about a disqualified book?

(Copied from Questions for the Vulcanologists)

Hi moderators.

I read The Valley of Shadows as Mike Massa's debut book for task 1. While he wrote a short story that was included in the anthology Black Tide Rising I don't think that counts as writing a whole book. The first time he was involved in a novel length story was the book that I read.

message 18: by Alysa (last edited Aug 19, 2019 09:52AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Hm. Yeah. I didn’t go and look at all his listed work (and I am not a Mod), but if it’s true that he had previously published only a short story in an anthology, then I would agree that his first full length work would indeed be his debut novel. I recall often seeing blurbs saying stuff like “Finally, our beloved short story writer has published his/her debut novel”!

ETA: I guess it seems a little strange to use a co-authored book as an author’s “debut novel” if it’s not the debut of *both* of the authors involved. But again, technically speaking, your book would still be Massa’s full-length debut novel, :/

@Beth, Karen's the ultimate decision maker (she's not playing so is objective) and she's asleep right now. She'll consider when she gets time

Beth & Team Not Yet:

We've had a good ol' head-scratch over this one, and - by the narrowest of margins - decided to allow this one.
We'll get your points back shortly.

For the future, and for all other teams: if a book is possibly debatable, check with other teams here. The Mods won't over-ride a group approval for those sorts of questions. We might not be so generous for the next close-call though!

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Thanks so much for your generosity!

In my feeble defense, since I didn't use the anthology for a challenge I never noticed that Goodreads "helpfully" listed half the short story writers as co-authors. I had heard him on a podcast talking about how excited he was when his short story submission landed him a chance to write with John Ringo and become a "real author", so I only knew this was his debut novel. It never entered my head that this was controversial, but I should have thought of it!

I would say yes!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments For something nasty on the cover (up to interpretation) -

I really want to read this book this week, LOL . So pretty please...

Blood Truth (Black Dagger Legacy, #4) by J.R. Ward - it's got a big dagger on the cover which I'm thinking is pretty "nasty" especially if it ends up in someone's gut. Yay or Nay??

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Same question re bright/acid green:

Fablehaven (Fablehaven, #1) by Brandon Mull

Tin Eye says cover is over 90% greens, but obviously only a smaller percentage is bright/acid green.
Is it enough, considering overall amount of green?
If you enlarge cover image here on GR, it really seems like it might be!

I think the bright/acid green has to be 50%

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments Not sure if I am catching all of these, but yes for the dagger being nasty, yes on the leaves being a green object, go by Tineye for the acid green on Fablehaven.

message 33: by Lexi (last edited Aug 21, 2019 09:10PM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Jenny, I think the issue is that Tineye does not clarify if it is bright green. I looked at that one for our group and by Tineye, 68.7% is the seaweed green, which is the dark green. Less than 25% are the bright greens (rainforest, olive and fern green), so I would go with no.

message 34: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments Yeah, I looked too. I meant go by the color bars on Tineye. I should have just said that I don't think that one will work.

I, on the other hand have a lovely acid green book that I have been planning to read for a couple of years, and it did not work for Uno, and does not contain the correct letters for the author for this task. So annoying. I will read it one day!!!!

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments for the 'something green on the cover' do 'random blobs' count or do we think it needs to be something concrete like a tree or a lamp or something?

asking about The Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish this book in particular because to me there is indeed something green on the cover but i'm just never sure how nitpicky we're being lol. probably overthinking it.

I get ya... It's the wording of "green item on the cover" that makes this task tricky to figure out. Technically I wouldn't class the above as being an "item" as such, though I would personally lean more towards the "it's green, it's good" side of the argument, lol.

“Something xyz on the cover” is meant to encompass anything but not the writing showing the authors name or book title.

message 40: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Laura wrote: "Bright Green? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Oz, #1) by L. Frank Baum"

Tin Eye says only 33.3% bright/acid green...

And I would go the other way on that one, since the green is just kind of random background w/the pink.
I think Karen is implying that it works though (message #39), because it isn't the name/author :D

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
I wasn’t really looking at the cover as I’m on the app and it’s too hard to make a call. I just wanted to be clear what “something” was designed to mean 😉

(And if the green blobs are part of what would you could consider as the cover background (colour cover) then it wouldn’t count. )

message 43: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments yeah i would say it probably doesn't count then as the whole background is just kind of the green and purple blobs lol oh well

message 47: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I do not think anyone has asked about this book yet. Do people consider this one bright green? It is 55% green if you add the greens together and the majority of that is called fruit salad green.

Jenny | 8050 comments Love that it is called fruit salad.

Best job in the world, right? Go to work, exchange emails, talk to your coworkers, go to lunch, have four martinis, then go back to work and give colors names. Only thing that makes sense.
