Beth | 1659 comments We read as much as we can before we get zapped by POISON. Go team!

Then we decide whether to finish the countdown anyway (there's a 50 point bonus for completing it) or to move into the other zones. My instinct is to finish the countdown unless there's nothing you want to read on the list.

Safezone one is really long this time, so I'm thinking maybe we should skip it. Safezone two is usually beyond us. So we might as well get the bonuses for finishing the countdown and then skip to SafeZone three and try to spell out a short word like "in" "an" or "one".

What do you think? I'll finish the 80's book today or tomorrow and at least start something else, I think you are on the flower one, and I'm hoping Chava is a hero and also gets to the detective one. If Chafic is reading something, we'll be almost down with the Countdown. And maybe we'll get lucky and regenerate in Round IV -- we healed up our Round 1 damage last week.

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Okay sounds good.

message 204: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chafic, are you there? If you are playing we need you to read one book on the countdown. If something came up then we need to know that.

message 205: by Beth (last edited Sep 13, 2019 11:25AM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I finished my 1980 book and chose my next book by it being the skinniest of the possibilities. So I'm reading Season of the Witch by an Irish author for Task 4: Author not from US, Canada or UK.

It's still a slow reading week but I'm hoping to finish it before the FLOOR IS POISON!

(Good thing we are Molten -- the other levels got poisoned yesterday!)

message 206: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Wow, Chava, I just noticed you read a Morrigan Crow book for the 500+ page task. How was it? I read the first one last year and I just saw the second one in the library and plan to grab it soon.

message 207: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Sorry I haven't been posting for a bit. I've finished the following books. Please put them on the spreadsheet where they fit best

Worst Case Scenario by Helen Fitzgerald

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Redemption Point by Candice Fox

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Will be finished with flowers book today and maybe i can find some quick read books for tomorrow. My boss stressed me out this week and killed my reading mood.

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Finished

message 210: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments You guys are heroes, Chava and Maritza. I think I'll finish the foreign author today, so we'll only be missing the book from the Foreign Lands list. and the Scandinavia book.

Chafic, do you have something from either of those? Are you there? Is everything all right?

Chafic is on another challenge with me. He doesn't check in often, but usually posts everything before the end. He's still around :) Maybe we send him a private message?

Do we know which one Chafic was reading for? I will see if I can find one that fits categories and then Chafic can take the other.

message 213: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Okay, I'll read Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Høeg. It is #361 on the Foreign Lands list and set in Denmark which is part of Scandanavia

Loved it. I have listened to both as audiobooks. I absolutely love this series! The audiobooks are amazing, they have sound effects with them. Book #3 will be out in a few months, can't wait

message 215: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I finished the Irish book.

Chava, did you send Chafic a message? If he isn't checking in he probably thinks he has a few days left for this, but this round is ending early.

I've got I am Malala on my shelves. I could read that in case Chafic read something other than the two remaining picks. I don't see anything that could work for both. It's unlikely that I'll finish by the deadline though.

Chafic, if you show up, we only have a few hours left until this round is over. If you finish one of the remaining spots, great! If not, everyone else has read multiple books, so if you've got anything that fits just put your book in where-ever you can. The rest of us will try to finish up the Countdown and then work on Safezone 3. We can't start the Safezone books until the Countdown is done, and we need you to read one of the Countdown books before it is done.

Beth | 1659 comments Here's the link to the countdown again:

COUNTDOWN!

I'll have my book done which fits for either of the 2 left over ones.
I've sent Chafic a message as well

message 218: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Finished Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Høeg - 469 pages, finished 9/15/2019

message 219: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Finished I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban.

Chafic, if you've read anything just grab that spot for your book.

message 220: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Well, Chafic never showed up, but Chava and I managed to finish the countdown.

So I guess we'll take some damage for not fulfilling requirements; I hope it's only ten points but I don't know. Chafic, since we're going to start reading in the Safezone, please don't update the COUNTDOWN. We'll just have to take the loss of points for not following instructions.

In the meantime we can start reading for Safezone 3, I guess?

Easy Words with good points:

ANY
ON
ONE
IN (can do repeatedly)
FOUND

AN
IS

CAN

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Okay. Ill see what I got.

message 222: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Chafic hasn’t replied to my message either. I hope all is ok

message 223: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Yeah, I’m always nervous when someone goes quiet on the Internet.

Oh well, maybe he won a lottery and has been busy shopping for mansions! I don’t know why I always go to the worst case first.

message 224: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Yeah hope all is good with him.

message 225: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Started book for C or N

oh I hope so. Great mansions in Dubai, I believe!! I'd get one with a sea view and a massive library room with comfy reading chairs and couches (ahhhh, yeah that would be amazing). I hope you're living the dream, Chafic!!

message 228: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Gosh struggling to finish book.

message 229: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I might not get much read this week. I'm really sick with gastro as are my kids. I'll try to get at least one or two done

message 230: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Maritza wrote: "Gosh struggling to finish book."

what are you reading?

message 231: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I hope you and your kids feel better soon, Chava. This is the off week, so if we finish anything great, but no worries. I'll amuse myself by trying to fit whatever we come up with into the short words.

Thanks, Beth. The youngest brought the dreaded gastro home from childcare. I've played nurse for the whole weekend and despite antibacterial wipes and soap, it still got me :(. I'm improving, so I might be able to finish something this week

Characters - Hazel, Mason, Declan, Rogers

message 238: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I've been reading two books at once, so I hope to finish both today. The first one is done:

All the Little Liars by Charlaine Harris 9/19/19
Characters: Aurora, Robin, Philip.

Oh, they just posted the deadline for this round:

Count down

message 239: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Still no sign of Chafic -- I guess he has a lot of mansions to inspect. Do we want to look for a replacement for the next round? Is that the last one?

message 240: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I currently have us working on two words:

USA

and

ANY

Because Maritza reads super high powered words and I'm greedy. But we've got three books up there -- Maritza's U and Y and my A. We can build ANY from them, so if we don't read anything else we have something. But I'm hoping to get another S to make U.S.A. (I think that's a legal word) and another A and a N for ANY.

I will for sure finish a book that works for S. The other one I'm reading is dragging a bit. What are the chances of us getting another A and another N?

message 241: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Is USA a word??

Chava | 1522 comments Beth wrote: "Still no sign of Chafic -- I guess he has a lot of mansions to inspect. Do we want to look for a replacement for the next round? Is that the last one?"

Hmm, that's not good. He hasn't shown up in my other group either.

It's in a task as U.S.A. There aren't a lot of Us available. What do you think?

Do you remember the names of some of the main characters?

message 246: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Beth wrote: "Chava wrote: "Finished

Suyuan Woo, June Woo, Lindo Jong, Waverly Jong, An-Mei Hsu, Rose Hsu Jordan, Ying-Ying St. Clair, Lena St. Clair

message 247: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments OK, so we've got USA spelled out (I looked at another team's spreadsheet and they were using it as a word, so I guess it's OK?) and now we just need an N for ANY.

We've got three days, so I have hope.

Any ideas for other words?

PS. Round 4 is up if you want to look at the spreadsheet

message 248: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Finished The Chain. I’m not near a computer. Please update

message 249: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Any good "N" characters in The Chain?

For now I put it down as the word "A"

message 250: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good morning guys. Was getting nervous as you guys were silent. I would like to finish challenge, I hate leaving things I start, so I would like a replacement.

Hope everything is well with Chafic.
