Beth | 1659 comments Chafic -- any luck with the spreadsheet? If not, do you want me to fill in the book you are currently working on?

Beth | 1659 comments Anyone have anything for 8 (carnivorous animal on cover) or 4 (audio has 4 voices) ? I should finish my Earthsea book tonight so I guess I could start one of those. The animal is easy; the only four voice books I know are the Tamora Pierce ones.

Hi team - When you add books to the spreadsheet, could you please also link the text in the cell to the book read on Goodreads? It makes it hard to check things without a link (and we may accidentally penalise you if we look at the wrong book because we have searched incorrectly, for example).

Thanks!

Isn't this molten stunning?

Unfortunately, you are in MOLTEN and have failed to complete the countdown tasks before our countdown.

This means you have been sprayed with some hot lava and lose 10 points for each book in the countdown stage not completed.

You can chose to finish your countdown books during this round for the 10 points per book, OR you can move straight on to the SafeZone groups for the 30+ points per book...

If you have a book in progress for Countdown, but didn't finish it before the Countdown hit zero then you can use that book for the SafeZone - no penalties will accrue in that instance only, but the timing constraints of the SafeZones will apply (i.e. if you use it for SafeZone 3, make sure you finish it only after you have completed SafeZone 1 and/or 2)

After an umpire's decision was requested, the Mods have decided to accept the book and not penalise you. This time....

Chava | 1522 comments oh boy, too much information at once. Please, someone, explain what message 59 means. I am currently in my 3rd book (Crazy love me by Lisa Unger). Do I continue or do I stop? Sorry, I'm totally confused

message 62: by Maritza (last edited Aug 19, 2019 05:18AM) (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good Morning Guys. I guess we failed to complete tasks by deadline. So do we complete books or use them for next tasks? What say we just move on to SafeZone - points per book are higher.

message 63: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments We ran out of time -- we only read 8 books (I'm trying to get credit for my book 1, since it was Massa's first novel although he had a short story out before).

Let's move onto the Safe Zone -- can we do Zone 1? Spell it out for L A V A? One of us has to find a book that either another team used or that was a previous month BOM.

Let's sign up for Zone 1, and while we are reading the Zone 1 book look for fits for Zone 2.

message 64: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chafic -- can you use the spreadsheet yet?

message 65: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I think books we've started since the round began can be used in the Safe Zones, so if there is something you started but not finished you can use it.

I guess try not to finish things until you know where they go?

message 66: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I have 30 minutes left on The Julius House and want to read Magic Triumphs which was a BOM. So those are the two A's in Lava -- can anyone read a L or V book?

message 67: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I have a L book. Will check if it’s a BOM or been read by someone

message 68: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments We only need one BOM book, really.

message 69: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Does Crazy love you by Lisa Unger fit anywhere? Otherwise I might leave it for next week?

message 70: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Will read Verboden Love

message 71: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chava, Crazy Love you would work for the L in LAVA, because of Lisa. Can you finish it quickly?

message 72: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Can finish today

message 73: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Also, we could eye Stage 2 to see if we want to try that or jump to Stage 3 and try to piece some words together. Those books look a bit harder to identify.

message 74: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Chava wrote: "Can finish today"

I've put the book on high speed and I'll finish it in a few hours.

message 75: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments OK, I'll get to work on Magic Triumphs. You'll probably beat me! Once we have L A V A done we need to decide whether to try Stage II or jump to Stage III.

I've found a book that has lava on the cover and lava in the text (2-iii), but I'm not having much luck with the other tasks. Anyone got anything?

message 76: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Since all the tasks are already assigned, I can read for Stage 2 or 3?

I have a book that works for Red Writing on Cover! Need abt 2-3 days to finish it. My other current reads don't fit for it just yet - but I think I can get another thats 50% red color.

Finished! :) Terrible book but hey done for the cause.

message 78: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Let's see if we can cover Stage II before we commit. Otherwise we can just try to put the extra books into words for stage III.

message 79: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Hi guys. I am not finished the L book anytime soon, Chafic can take it if you want.

message 80: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Maritza, you were on the "V". Can anyone get a V book in the next few days? I've got one I could finish by Friday (maybe sooner if its really good) but I hope someone can do better.

Can everyone access the spreadsheet?

message 81: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Oh, the mods gave us back my debut book!

message 82: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Still reading my V book but if someone finishes first claim it.

message 83: by Beth (last edited Aug 20, 2019 11:35PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chava, can you put the link and completion in on the spreadsheet for your L book? Or is it giving you trouble again? (I just did mine for the BOM book)

Everyone, try not to FINISH anything until we get the V book in to complete Group 1.

And this is the time to see if we want to attempt Group 2 or work on finding words to spell out in group three. As I said, I have a book I could use for 2-iii, Chafic has something for 2-i, but we'd still need ii (red cover, H-O-T in author, and iv (something hot on cover, L-A-V-A in author name).

If that's too hard, we just take everything we finish AFTER the V book is submitted and try to make words from it. These words have to be in the countdown tasks somewhere.

Did I get that right?

I put the link in, but it's not hyperlinked, so not sure what to do. Link is there though

To make a hyperlink, you put it in:
=HYPERLINK("www.goodreads.com/whatever_the_link_i...", "My Book Name")

I added the =HYPERLINK stuff to your current link.

Beth | 1659 comments Next round (five days away or so) list is up on our spreadsheet:

10 with a title that starts with O
9 set in Canada
8 tagged MPG Sci-Fi
7 that is more than 50% black (use tin eye to confirm)
6 from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List. For this task, you can use books that would otherwise not be allowable for the challenge (e.g. due to wordcount or genre)
5 that has one of the 50 states of the USA in the title
4 that is more than 400 pages
3 that has the letters C-A-T in the title (in any order)
2 written by an African American author
1 from the NPR List

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Still working on V. Should finish by tomorrow. Will find book for whatever we need.

message 91: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Unless we come up with plans for the rest of Stage 2 by tomorrow I think we should see if we can finish any words in Stage 3.

I can probably finish:

* Dead Over Heels
A, T, D, C, H

* Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds
L, B, S,

So if anyone is finishing something that has spells out W, A, or S we could spell out HAS or WAS. Can we get bigger? There's a list of how much point each letter is on the side of the spreadsheet.

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Completed -
Verboden Love by Monica Marks

I'm at work and cannot update ss now. Can someone please update.

Okay, so I'm not completely clear on what is needed. I am finishing Run Away by Harlan Coben tomorrow. Can that be used in any way?
It's night here now, but I'll be back in about 6-7 hours.

message 95: by Beth (last edited Aug 22, 2019 10:14AM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments For Group III we can spell out words used in the Countdown Stage tasks. The rules say we can use the letters at the start of the title, author names, or main character in our spelling.

So I listed the letters we'd get from the books I'll finish so we could figure out what words we can make. We have to completely finish a word to get points for the letters.

So with Chava's book by Harlan Coban and my Dead over Heels starring Aurora Teagarden and my Sanderson book we could announce we were spelling out HAS from task 8 "Has a carnivorous animal". Then as long as we both finished and filled out the spreadsheet we'd get the points.

If Chava's book has a main character named Wally, we could use W instead and make WAS (Task 5 "was first published"), because W is a 40 point letter instead of the usual 30.

If we had a few other books to play with and also had access to letters C H A R A C T E R S we could spell out CHARACTER and get 270 points. But we'd have to finish all of them. But we can change our minds at the last minute if we see we aren't getting them and go back to HAS. Or "A" (Task 8 "has a carnivorous animal").

Does that make sense? I was hoping that someone was good with anagram type things and could come up with more sophisticated options than HAS because I'm not very good at this stuff. But ideally every book we read through the end of this week gets stuffed into a word.

I think we are officially giving up on Group II, right?

message 96: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Words with higher point letters:

CARNIVOROUS (V is 40 points, U is 50)
COVER (V is 40 points)
AUTHOR (U is 50 points)
PUBLISHED (U is 50 points)
SEVEN (V is 40 points)
SIX (I is 40, X is 50)
AUDIO
FOUR

and more. Basically if anyone is going to read an "X" book we should go for SIX. And if you have an "I" book there are at least two uses of "Is" so that's also a good target.

message 97: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chafic, you can access the spreadsheet, right? If you still are having trouble, PM either one of us or the moderators with a link to the spreadsheet and your email address and we can invite you directly. I think that has worked so far.

message 98: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Started an x book.

message 99: by Beth (last edited Aug 22, 2019 05:32PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments WOOt Maritza! Who can do an "I"? I'm going to put SIX on the spreadsheet.

message 100: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I should finish my Sanderson book by tomorrow, or Saturday. I have a long drive to make on Sunday so I could maybe listen to my next audio A Fool and His Honey.

Chafic is reading an R book.

Can we also get an O and a U book by the deadline? That would spell out FOUR for a bunch of points.

If we can't get O and U, can anyone read something else that uses my Dead Over Heels and Chafic's Runaway? Let me know and I'll put the letters in the spreadsheet. In the worst case my book makes the word "A" from Task 10.
