The floor is lava is a game in which players pretend that the floor or ground is made of lava (or any other lethal substance), and must avoid touching the ground, as touching the ground will "kill" the player who did so.
We are taking this fun childhood game and giving it a NBRC spin!

This is a self-directed team challenge, which means you create your own teams of up to four players ; and your own team name. You will be playing for points against everyone else who signs up. You can, of course, create alliances with other teams to get ideas of what to read for hard to meet tasks, but ultimately you are competing against other teams in your category.

There are different categories depending on how many books your team reads over a two week period which are explained below. This means that anyone can join and compete against similar levels of readers.

IMPORTANT

You will need to be able to access and edit Google Sheets to join this challenge. We will give you a template, but you need to use it to track your books and your points.
We work on an honour system, so we are not asking you to submit your spreadsheets for review, but all sheets need to be accessible for viewing by all players. The mods will also be checking sheets for injuries at the end of each round.

HOW TO FIND A TEAM
You can use *THIS THREAD* to find like minded players, or shout out to your GR friends. Either way, sign ups are done AS A TEAM, so you need to have your four players ready to go before signing up.

Challenge Dates
There will be 4 rounds which are 2 weeks each.
Starting August 12 - finishing 7 October

HOW TO PLAY
Countdown stage
We start off by shouting "The Floor is Lava! In 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-0!"
By the time the counter is 0, the floor is Lava and if your team hasn't read the required books, your team will be stuck in the lava (i.e. lose points).The 10 tasks and the deadly substance will change each round. You read these tasks as a team (you don't individually have to read for all 10). Each team member must read for at least one of the tasks in the countdown, or you will lose points. Safezone stage
Once your team has read for the countdown and jumped out of the deadly substance, you have some choices while you are in the safe zone These are grouped into 3:
1) complete a spell-it-out of the floor substance (round one is L-A-V-A) for 30 points per letter. All letters in this group must be spelled out to get the points. Note there are special rules for the spell-it-out dependent on your team category.

Molten: you need one letter from LAVA to be a book another team has read during the challenge or a prior NBRC BOM
Crater: you need two letters from LAVA to be a book another team has read during the challenge or a prior NBRC BOM
Magma: you need three letters from LAVA to be a book another team has read during the challenge or a prior NBRC BOM
Volcano: you need all letters from LAVA to be a book another team has read during the challenge or a prior NBRC BOM

; and/or

2) complete the four bonus tasks for 50 points per task. All must be spelled out to get the points. Note there are special rules dependent on your team category.
Molten: no restrictions ;
Crater: at least 2 team members need to complete at least 1 task ;
Magma: at least 3 team members need to complete at least 1 task;
Volcano: all team members need to complete at least 1 task

; and/or

3) complete spell-it-outs of any of the words used in the tasks (each letter will have a different point value ranging from 10-50 points each). Each word must be spelled to entirety to get points for the spell-it-out. If one of the words in the task is a number (e.g. 19th or 1950s) these are ineligible for the spell-it-out. Only words that don't include numbers can be spelled. Each word can only be spelled once.

You can complete all three of these safe zone groups if you wish, but you can't complete them concurrently. If you decide to start, but you don't complete a safe zone group, you will get burnt feet (but you will have the chance to regenerate later). This means you can start books for the safe zone groups at the same time, but you have to finish a group at a time.
HINT: As group 3 is so broad, you’d only get into group 3 if you had finished 1 or 2 (or decided not to do one or both of them).

At the end of the round (two weeks), we will shout out the next lethal substance the floor will turn into for the next round.
Along the way, you will have opportunities to "regenerate" lost body parts or health for points.

Books for each round need to be started AFTER the round begins. So, for example, in round one if you start a book, it is a good idea to find the short words in safezone group 3 you can assign it to before the deadline for round one as you won't be able to use it for round two!

TEAM CATEGORIES

BOOK REQUIREMENTS

Books must be 100 pages or more in length. (unless the task states otherwise)

Unless otherwise specified in the task, (some lower point tasks will allow this) the following books can NOT be used:
* Comic / Graphic / Manga
* Cookbooks
* Textbooks
* Travel Guides
* Poetry
* Poems
* Childrens / Middle Grade novels and plays can only be used where you can verify the word count through AR BookFind as 25,001 words or more. If you can't verify it with that site, you can check if audible has the unabridged version as more than 3 hours. If you can't verify either, then you can't use it (unless the specific task says you can)

SPELL-IT-OUT RULES
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name.
As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.
If the first letter of a title is a numerical digit, then you use the first letter of that digit for your spell out (i.e. 1984 is N; 2046 is T; 1Q84 is O)
If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used.
We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.


For example,
* Team Cinnamon signs up as 30 books per round. They are in the CRATER category. Within ten days, they have read 37 books and they think they will read 43 by the end of the round (Magma Category). In order to be eligible to win, the team needs to make sure they have the minimum requirements for MAGMA category met (i.e. this impacts the group 1 and 2 safe zone challenges) for the round.
If the team does not meet these requirements, they will not be eligible to win within their category at the end of the challenge.

Countdown Stage
At the start of round 1, all players start reading for the 10 tasks.
About half way through the round, the team has completed the 10 tasks and can now move to Safe Zone Stage.
The team decide to complete group 1 and spell out LAVA.
Once this is completed they don't have much time left, so they decide to move to group 3, and skip the group 2 bonus tasks.
Group 3 enables them to spell-it-out any of the words used in the tasks. They choose to spell out "C-O-V-E-R" (from task 8) and T-R-I-L-O-G-Y (from task 3) and then try to squeeze in A-N (from task 7), but won't make it in time, so instead change it to A (from task 8) which they finish before the end of the round. This gives them points for each letter.

CHANGES TO TEAM CATEGORY
At the end of the challenge you will only be able to win in the category that your actual team reading puts you in. So you need to monitor your books per round during the challenge and alter your reading to the task requirements for the category.
You can only alter your team category prior to the end of round 1

If the team reads 38 books in round 1, 44 in round 2 and 39 in round 3, they would still be considered in the MAGMA category as for one of the rounds they read in that category.

SIGNING UP
Sign Ups need to be done by one person who is entering the details for the TEAM.
This means you need to have your four players decided (and ideally a team name) before completing the sign up form. Only one person signs up on behalf of the team.

Make sure you know before signing up:
* how many books your team will read in a two week period
* the Goodreads User ID of your team members
* the email address you will use to access the team spreadsheet (there are generally issues if you don't use a gmail address. Please keep that in mind if you want fast access)

So, CRATER teams have hit zero.... now what?

the Mods will be checking to see what damage, if any you've incurred during the countdown stage
if you've finished the countdown tasks, carry on with your SafeZone reading
if you didn't finish the countdown tasks you can chose to finish them for the 10 points per book, OR you can move straight on to the SafeZone groups for the 30+ points per book...
If you have a book in progress for Countdown, but didn't finish it before the Countdown hit zero then you can use that book for the SafeZone - no penalties will accrue in that instance only, but the timing constraints of the SafeZones will apply (i.e. if you use it for SafeZone 3, make sure you finish it only after you have completed SafeZone 1 and/or 2)

MOLTEN teams: your deadline is still Monday; this information will apply when your countdown ends then, but for now, keep reading for Countdown tasks (and only Countdown tasks! - unless of course, you have finished the countdown already) until you finish them or time runs out...

When you add books to the spreadsheet, could you please also link the text to the book read? It makes it hard to check things without a link (and we may accidentally penalise you if we look at the wrong book because we have searched incorrectly, for example).

We will assume the linked book is the one you read, and the one that fits the task (or not!)

Make sure you link the right book!

Rejuvenation in Round 2



You can regenerate any damage caused in two ways (you can chose to use one, both or neither method):
1) Participate in a BOM by (a) writing DQ set: gain 30 points OR (b) getting involved in the discussion: gain 15 points (note that these do not stack - you can't claim for (a) and (b))
2) Build a ladder of at least 4 connecting books - gain 50 points; with additional 10 points for each additional book in the ladder.

☣BOM participation points gained in Round 1 can be can be claimed in Round 2 (ditto for Rounds 3 & 4).
☣Books used in the ladder do NOT need to be different books to what you are using in your countdown or safezone tasks. ☣Note that the timing constraints will still apply (you can't use a book in the Safe Zones before the Countdown has finished etc).
☣You do not have to read ladder books in order.
☣All regeneration points gained will be applied.
☣All books used in regeneration count towards your total books read.
☣You can regenerate either all the points you have lost in injuries OR up to a cap of 175 regeneration points, whichever is the lower. (i.e. if you have lost 180 points, you can only regenerate 175; if you lost 80 points, you can only claim 80 regeneration points)

The echidnas on our floor are currently only babies (puggles) and pretty slow moving.
Because they are so cute, and it is our last round, every team to complete their countdown tasks this round prior to the countdown reaching 0 will receive a bonus 200 points. (These bonus points will be shown on the current points spreadsheet)
