message 5: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I like the Howl's Moving Castle reference.

Maybe Calcifer's Cronies?

(You can tell I like alliteration)

message 6: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Oh these are all good choices xD - but you know what - Team Not Yet is actually a really funny name that I feel connected with =D.

Just me? Probably.

Calcifer's Cronies gets my vote!

LOL, I was just thinking that too Not yet (or even Not just yet) is funny. I am with Calcifer's Cronies too. I need to watch that Howl's Moving Castle though, I've never heard of it

Beth | 1659 comments While we wait for Maritza to chime in on name we can eyeball the tasks for for round 1, which is at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

How comfortable is everyone with google sheets? Just in case, I'll copy the countdown tasks, which we'd have to complete before going for extra Group Tasks. Of course, Round 1 doesn't start until August 12, so who knows what we'll be reading in that distant future..

10 first published on the 10th of a month
9 with at least nine characters (need to have a speaking part, do not need to be main characters)
8 that has a carnivorous animal on the cover
7 written by an author who has published at least seven books (as listed on Goodreads)
6 that is number six in the series
5 that was first published in the 1950s
4 where the audio version has at least four narrators
3 that is part of what was originally a planned trilogy, but became a longer series (can include .5 books added later)
2 that has two authors (as credited on Goodreads)
1 which is the author's debut novel

message 9: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Are we allowed to start books before the 12th of August or we can only start reading from the 12th of August?

How does everyone to work on these tasks? Do we want to put our hand up for the different tasks and assign ourselves to them?

message 10: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments No starting books early, and we can't start books for the extra point stuff until after we finish all the Count Down tasks. (I just went and reread all this stuff). So only books started on or after August 12 count.

Yes, grab any that you like, If two people want the same task, I think we should yield to whomever can finish it first. Some are easier than others.

message 11: by Beth (last edited Jul 23, 2019 09:16PM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments For example, the book The Valley of Shadows which I'm giving to my son before I get to read it is:

8. Zombies on cover (they are carniverous!)
7. written by John Ringo, so lots of titles
6 Number 6 in series
3 I think this was supposed to be a trilogy!
2 Has 2 authors
1 Mike Massa's debut book

So maybe I should save it for an August read!

message 12: by Chava (last edited Jul 23, 2019 09:12PM) (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Okay, I can take:

Nr 10 first published on the 10th of a month with Crazy Love You by Lisa Unger (published Feb 10, 2015)

nr 7 written by an author who has published at least seven books (as listed on Goodreads) with Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. She has written way more than 7 books.

Nr 2 that has two authors (as credited on Goodreads) with The 18th Abduction by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

The last 2 books will be coming to me as audiobooks after the 12th of August and I have to read for another challenge anyway LOL

Oh you'd love it ! It's also a book by Dianna Wynne Jones - Howl's Moving Castle - definitely underrated but great reading ^_^

As for the books, that's going to be tough - I don't normally pick my reads ahead of time and rather just let them call to me - but I'm assuming we can't read for the same tasks can we :P ?

I'll probably pick up a book closer to the date.

I love that you and your son read the same books! How old is he? I buddy read with my 9 year old daughter, but they are books at her level, not the ones I chose for this challenge obviously (although she'd love to, she is rather intrigued by bloody messy thrillers lol)

message 15: by Maritza (last edited Jul 24, 2019 08:24AM) (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Sorry guys could not find team. But here I am.

I will be returning from vacay at start of challenge but will rest up and be ready to begin.
In looking over count down tasks I know for a fact I won't be able to cover the following tasks - no Audio books for me (don't like them), no1950's book and possibly no 10th of the month books (except that it happens to occur).
Anything else I should be able to cover.

message 16: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Team Not Yet is fine by me.

message 17: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Well, Calcifer's Cronies was popular, but I think Team Not Yet got the most votes! Go Team Not Yet!

My sons are 18 and 20, so they've had the run of my library for a while. I worry a bit that the 18 year old never learned to find books on his own, since his older brother and I hand him so much stuff we think he'd like.

Chava, if your daughter wants to help in the challenge you guys could read some of the Tamora Pierce books. Sandry's Book is the first of the Circle Opens series and it's great for that age -- either in print or in FULL CAST AUDIO, so it would count for #4. The book just has to exist in audio to count -- you can read it either way.

I like classic mysteries, so maybe I can find one from the 1950s.

message 18: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I went back and stole Message 4 to keep a list of books we are volunteering for. It's just for suggestions -- it's not meant to be final.

My daughter loves reading, especially if she buddy reads with me. We've develped our own little challenges for her to get her to extend her reading range

message 20: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments The mods say we can keep the name Not Yet, so I hope y'all were serious. I like it!

I'll try to make a pile of various books that fit the list, so when August come I can look to see if any of them look tasty. Do we want to plan out the rest of the two weeks or just take it as it comes? I'm pretty lazy but if you guys are planners I can bestir myself.

message 21: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Come as it comes is fine for me

message 22: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Well, one week to start. If you spot a book that works for the first challenge maybe don't start it yet?

And if you want to grab a spot shout out here and I'll keep message 4 updated (or if you want to ungrab a spot). I figure we want to try to finish the first ten in the first week or so.

message 23: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Will take 6th in series - Cat's Lair

message 24: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments I know it's a week to start... but I can't seem to figure out what I would want to use...

I'll probably fill for whatever remaining task is when the day comes

message 25: by Chava (last edited Aug 06, 2019 03:17AM) (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Can you please take #7 away from me? I had to start the book as it has to go back to the library soon. I'll stick with the other 2 though.

Actually... I could do this task - definitely have a few Stephen King books I wanted to dive into

message 27: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments I hava a hold on 1950s book just in case

message 28: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments They've posted the countdown:

Countdown to Lava

message 29: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Argh! 9pm Monday start for me!! Not a great time to start a challenge.

message 30: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Can everyone access the team spreadsheet?

How about we fill in the Book title when we start the book so we don't overlap, and then add in the rest as we finish. That way when you finish your first book you can check to see what you should grab next.

message 31: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Okay, I've started with The 18th Abduction for #2

message 32: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Starting 6th in series with Cat's Lair

message 33: by Beth (new)

I can't put anything in that spreadsheet either. I've just requested access

message 37: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I've finished my book for #2 - that has two authors (as credited on Goodreads)
Title: The 18th Abduction
Authors: James Patterson & Maxine Paetro
Finished: 8/13/2019
How it fits: written by 2 authors, credited by GR

message 38: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Yay -- first points!

message 39: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I've taken on #10 as well (already on the spreadsheet) as my #9 book wasn't starting (now fixed). I'll start that one next week.

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments I should finish #1 today and # 7 tomorrow. Then I can start either a 1950's book (#5) or a Earthsea book for trilogy that grew (#3). I'll see what other people are reading then.

Chafic, were you reading a Stephen King for 7? Because the audio I got for my drive to my son's college works for 7. I guess it also works for 9, so I can grab that from Chava if that makes things faster.

Maritza, can you get onto the spreadsheet now?

message 41: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Ah woo sorry, long weekend has me going a bit slow.
I finished abook, but not a Stephen King book - but it still works for the same task

Completion Post
His Last Bow (Sherlock Holmes, #8) by Arthur Conan Doyle
Book: His Last Bow
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
FInished: 8/14
How it Fits: He's written a lot, but there's 9 Sherlock Holmes books alone!

message 42: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chafic, do you want me to put it in the spreadsheet for you?

Chava, I'm going to finish a book tomorrow (Thursday, US) that has nine characters. Does yours fit anywhere else?

After I finish the drive home, I"m thinking I'll start the book for task 3, although if someone else grabs that I'll switch to something else. Let's remember to update the spreadsheet when we start something!

message 43: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I have 10 pages left in mine. I will see where else it can go.

message 44: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments If it doesn't fit anywhere I'll just enjoy my audio as I drive home and then get back to reading.

message 45: by Chafic (new)

Chafic (Rello) (irrell) | 35 comments Beth wrote: "Chafic, do you want me to put it in the spreadsheet for you?

Beth that would be wonderful if you could, for some reason I'm stuck with 'view-only' on the spreadsheet and can't edit it :(

message 46: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chava had to poke them to get access. It says it's accessible to whoever has the link but it seems to be glitchy.

message 47: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Or like this: Spreadsheet

I got this link from the doc's "Share" feature but I don't know if it's different from the ones above.

message 48: by Beth (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Chava, I put in your Sherlock Holmes book. Do you want to claim your next read?

message 49: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Will try link on home computer later. Am on phone right now. Hope to finish my book by today or tomorrow the latest.
