Best and Worst Books of the Summer 09 Challenge

I'm very mean with my 5 stars ... only one made the grade during the summer!

It seems I'm also pretty mean with one stars! I've given none a one during the summer, but my worst read was ...

(I have a feeling this thread might be responsible for a large number of additions to my wishlist!)

Usually it's really hard to get a 1-star from me (usually I give books I don't like 2-stars). But this time around I read some real doozies.

I found The Owl Killers to be absolutely fascinating - I learnt a lot about a period of history I knew little about, the plot was really good and I was gripped from beginning to end!
BUT, I also liked The Other Boleyn Girl! That was a 4* read for me!

Bomb! Run for your life! Oh the horror:

I didn't really give out many five star books either but I read more good books than bad ones..so that's always a good thing!
Some of my favorites of the challenge:
Those Who Save Us
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Speak
Water for Elephants
ONE STAR:
ALMOST MOON!!!

And the only book that I have ever given one star to is Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The. Usually when I don't enjoy a book I just put it down, but I had to read that one for school back in 10th grade and couldn't stand it.

And the only book that I have ever given one star to is [bo..."
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is one of my ALL TIME favorites!!

The Thirteenth Tale
and one called Search dog- about a mountain rescue dog in the Peak District.
There was only one 1*
You Only Live Twice
I will be looking for books to add to my ever increasing tbr pile aswell!

I didn't rate any below 3 stars, but from the Winter and Spring Challenges:
2 Star Read

Oye... I gave it two stars, because it had parts that were interesting, but for the most part, it was just BORING... and yet, was he on some kind of hallucinogen when writing the ending??? The movie was better, but only because I was able to watch it at 1.5 speed. ;)
1 Star Read

I couldn't finish it. AND, this book is the reason I put off reading The Hunger Games... grrr!

I always get Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre confused... I didn't like either. But Wuthering Heights?? It was AWFUL! So full of hatred and pettiness and betrayal and lying... gaaahhh! Awful!

But from my 4 star reads, the one I'd most highly recommend would be:

Read this for my face-to-face book club and really enjoyed it. It was a quick read and had a lot of interesting points to discuss with the larger group.
And the two I disliked the most intensely were (2 stars):

I didn't like either of them and the only reason I didn't give them 1 star was because they elicited absolutely no emotional response from me, which is a requirement for me to give a book 1 star. I have to really loathe something before I give it 1 star!

Cait - wasn't The Likeness great?! I liked it much better than In the Woods... what did you think of that one?

I really enjoy her writing style and can't wait for her to come out with another book.

Whew! Glad people like this thread. It's so interesting to see what people loved and hated and I love all the pretty covers!
Bwahahaha, Beth. Stardust of Yesterday was HORRIBLE!!! I don't even read romance novels, but I loved Kurland's short story in To Weave a Web of Magic, and this was one of the few books my library had of hers. I have a word doc with all the books I've read in the past few years plus reviews. My review of this book was nearly a full page in 10-point type of ranting hate.

It's interesting that they are mostly young adult books--maybe I am more generous with those because I think they will be powerful with kids.
Anyway, I didn't have any one stars, but my two stars were
The Soloist, The Bug Funeral A Professor Simon Shaw Mystery , Stuffed, Cadillac Beach, Short Change
I also didn't finish Blue Sword by Robin McKinley--I just couldn't get into it, which I was very disappointed about because that task was the one I was most looking forward to. I'm less than halfway through, so maybe I can still work it in for the next challenge

Personally, I have been LOVING the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series the whole summer long. A favorite being #5, In the company of Cheerful Ladies.
One of the cutest little book--with big lessons--I've read this summer is Bliss to You: Trixie's Guide to a Happy Life by Trixie Koontz (and Dean Koontz, of course). I highly recommend it!
One of my worst reads this summer: Catch-22. Sarcasm, yes, I get thee, but I just have a hard time with this book.

Only one book was bad enough to rate only one star, but I had a couple that hit 2 stars as well.

I also came across some disappointments:

I had no 5s, but many 4s:

And no 1s but a couple 2s:

I'm a pretty forgiving reader, so no 1 star reads. I give out a whole lot of 3's and 4's. Just a couple of 2's from this summer:

BEST 5 stars:

WORST 1 -2 stars

Only Lost Souls rated a 1, the rest 2. I know I'm going to hear some flack about the last book on my worst list, but oh well.
I read lots of really good books this summer. I had too many 4's to post. Just drop my read section for more ideas. I've added several to my TBR from the lists above. Thanks for the ideas!

The worst (1 or 2 stars):

And: The Supper Club by Sophie King

The Information Officer by Mark Mills
How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
The Other Hand by Chris Cleave
Iris and Ruby by Rosie Thomas
My two star books for this challenge were:
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Scarred Hearts by Max Blecher
The Accidental by Ali Smith
My one star books for this challenge were:
The Lost Dog by Michelle De Kretser
The Daydream Girl by Bella Pollen

The Various Haunts of Men, by Susan Hill
Journey to the River Sea, by Eva Ibbotson
Silk, by Alessandro Baricco
She, by H. Rider Haggard
I was fortunate enough to not have any one-starred books, but the worst ones were probably:
The Book of Evidence, by John Banville
Reading Lolita in Tehran A Memoir in Books, by Azar Nafisi
The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros

Luckily for me, much more 5-stars than 1-star for me this summer. I was impressed by the number of really good books I found.
