Sabrina | 393 comments Hey guys! Sorry I'm posting so late but I was finalizing my TBR - which is quite lofty as I've been very sporadic in my reading this year and I really wanna complete the challenge if possible. In total I'm prioritizing 8 hard novels and 5 audio books, and I'm also going to try to do 1 serial reader book, 1 short story online, 3 comic books, and 1 more hard book if time so I can finish the challenge. I doubt I'll be able to do all this but I can definitely do the 8 max.

So in terms of strategy, I haven't yet looked at what categories my stuff fulfills, I kind of think it'll be easier to just do it as I go? I'll put together a spreadsheet of some kind tomorrow. Basically just everyone's names plus all the categories.

If you guys have suggestions for organization or strategy please let me know, as I am new to the leader role. Happy reading :)

message 3: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Good morning! Looking forward to this. Life (meaning work and lots of social life connected to Christmas) mean I can't fully commit till after Christmas. But I have work off from tomorrow and I'll still be reading. As far as strategy goes, a spreadsheet is gold. Some wonderful person shared theirs last readathon. Glad you took on the team leader role Sabrina, but we are all in this together, so you're going to be fine :)

message 4: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Looked at the list: I have a book that's high on my list that has snow on the cover and a very cold atmosphere (it's set during the Fimbul winter that comes before ragnarok... so really really cold)

message 5: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments ...but I agree Sabrina, that we just take it as we go.

message 6: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Oh, I can also read a book first published in december: I´m reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard, the new edition illustrated by Chris Riddell. The first edition was published in december.

message 7: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Hello Team 2!

Looking forward to the read-a-thon fun. 😀 I'm on a December roll, so I'm really hoping to be able to contribute a decent amount to our team goal. I'm doing normal reading, audio, plus planning on a few graphic novels as well.

I'm planning on finishing Out of Africa today, and I'm listening to Jurassic Park, but that one will take a while as I've still 10 hours to go. I should be able to knock off a graphic novel today as well.

message 8: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I’m reading The Last Black Unicorn which will work for the blue cover.

Just a heads up that prompt 7 has been corrected to: Read a book with a character born after 2000 (child main character)

message 10: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Good morning! Looking forward to the readathon! Emily posted a spreadsheet in the intro post if we want to use that one.

I am finishing a Debbie Macomber book now, not sure what category it will fulfill. I can do the "set in another country" book. Although technically I finished the ATY challenge, the "set in a country you would like to visit" is tenuous, so I would like to replace it with one that fits better.

Johanne- I picked up Out of Africa from the library yesterday. Let me know how you like it.

message 11: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Oh bless Emily and her spreadsheeting skills. Will definitely be using that.

message 12: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 63 comments Hi team! I won’t be on GR much over the weekend, we’re traveling and it is wonky on my phone, but I will definitely be reading on my own and will post my updates when I get back to a computer tomorrow evening.

I’m off work until 1/2/19 and hoping to read a lot of books. :)

message 13: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Kathy Jo, it is Jody who is reading Out of Africa :)

message 14: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I've just finished Out of Africa, which can be counted for either:

18. Read a book set in a country different from your own; or
20. Read a non-fiction book

It was good, not quite what I was expecting though.

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Johanne wrote: "Kathy Jo, it is Jody who is reading Out of Africa :)"

Oops, sorry! Guess I lost track of posts

Anyway, glad to hear Jody thought it was good.

cool! I'll mark it as both in the spreadsheet for now and then if someone else reads something that counts for either of those I'll change it.

Oh wait, I forgot I'm reading Harry Potter, that can count for different country. I'll count yours for non fiction

message 19: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments If you guys could also tell me every so often how many total pages or audiobook hours you've reached that'd be great!

message 20: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I'm here. Just realized the threads were up. This is my first readathon in this group so I'm not sure how it all works.

My current book:
Pro Reclaiming Abortion Rights by Katha Pollitt has 288 pages and works for any of the following
4. Read a book with a purple or blue cover
20. Read a non-fiction book
23. A book by a new author (one you haven't read before)

message 21: by Tracy (last edited Dec 23, 2018 03:02AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Checking in quick. I missed the whole day because Ive been really sick. Hopefully will be feeling better tomorrow.

Right now planned books are : His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1) by Naomi Novik Force of Nature (Aaron Falk, #2) by Jane Harper and To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han

The girls are finishing up their ATY challenge this week so I'll definitely be able to get in 3 picture books and I can probably squeeze in a graphic novel.

I'll check again tomorrow and see where my books potentially fit. ( the first 2 are to finish my ATY challenge)

Also, just went and did the Kick off for the first game.

message 22: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Rayner (paperbackshay) | 14 comments Hi everyone! Sorry I am just now seeing this, I have had a super busy day.
I am currently reading More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera and in no particular order my TBR to hopefully finish within the week is My New Crush Gave to Me by Shani Petroff Make My Wish Come True by Fiona Harper and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling
The first book (More Happy Than Not) will fit into 5. A book that fits a 'reject' prompt. The reject prompt of "a book dealing with memory" totally fits this book because it includes a company that helps people forget their memories.
My New Crush Gave to Me is from the library so it would fit into 11.
I am not too sure where the others may fit.

Sabrina | 393 comments https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Thought I'd share our copy with you guys so you can view our progress. I'll still make the updates in there for everyone but I thought you'd like to see.

Anyway, tomorrow I should be finished with both Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Sadie, which I haven't yet looked thoroughly for what those can fulfill.

Keep me updated on books finished, pages complete, and hours listened so we can start revealing boxes!

message 24: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Other than Jody nobody else has updated me on a finished book is that correct? I want to make sure I'm not missing anything

message 25: by Marin (new)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments Hi everyone, Looking forward to completing these challenges. What I have planned for the read-a-thon is:

Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days - beautiful cover, blue cover, snow on cover, cold atmosphere, AtY challenge
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - AtY challenge
Bughouse Volume 1 - graphic novel
Get as far as I can in The Chronicles of Narnia - cold atmosphere, children's books, set in a country different from my own

I have a couple others, but I suspect those will mainly go towards the page counts (and that's if I get to them -- I like making ambitious reading plans).

message 26: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments 254 pages today! I finished 74 Seaside Avenue by Debbie Macomber. Counts as new author. 74 Seaside Avenue (Cedar Cove, #7) by Debbie Macomber

A bit of snow on mount Ranier and possibly beautiful cover?

Also participated in the intro game today.

Tonight we celebrated my inlaw's 55th anniversary and I spent the afternoon with my husband, so I didn't have as much time to read today.

message 27: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments okay so for the end of today we have the "snow on the cover" and "non fiction book" squares completed!

message 28: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Good morning!

I just read 84, Charing Cross Road, which can count for #21, a book in one sitting. 😁

message 29: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Hi all
So far I finished 1 book, 'Language of Thorns - midnight tales...' by Leigh Bardugo. Can count for #19 beautiful cover, if you guys agree. The book is altogether beautiful.
I also read a picture book - 'Santa Bruce' by Ryan T. Higgins, a hilarious picture book about the very reluctant and grumpy bear, Bruce.
Total of 152 pages
and 1 hour of audio book

Travelling later today with my husband and kids to my fathers house filled with siblings, nieces and nephews so probably won't get much time to read the next couple of days. But will still check-in. And you can count on me for picture books and the graphic novel if necessary, but I am not bringing them on the trip, so maybe we'll hit those way before.

message 30: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Hope you feel better soon, Tracy.

Your board has been updated :)

message 32: by Jody (last edited Dec 23, 2018 05:57AM) (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I hope everyone's enjoying their Sunday so far!

Tracy, get well soon! 😘

Sabrina You can put me down for my 5 hours of audio for #14, and I'll let you know when I've done my 9 hours for #15. This crappy, rainy, domestic day is perfect for audiobooks! I've been cleaning out cupboards, wrapping presents, and making fruit bread ... actually all pretty fun, even the cupboard. I really enjoy organising. 😃 Tomorrow is housework day though, which is not quite as fun, but at least I'll be able to knock off more of Jurassic Park! It's a lot more enjoyable than I'd expected - if it wasn't for the AtY group, I never would have picked it up.

Laura Thanks for updating the board!

Also, I'm pretty sure I know what the top left book is. (view spoiler)

message 33: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I agree with you on top left book, Jody

message 34: by Tracy (last edited Dec 23, 2018 02:22PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Johanne wrote: "I agree with you on top left book, Jody"

Same... I agree its (view spoiler)

And thanks ladies, I have a killer headache today....its been a long time since Ive been out and I over indulged in the wine and then my dumb self did 2 shots....not a good idea 😩. Nothing deadly lol, just the worst hangover ever. Dating again at 43 is going to take some getting used to, I felt like I was 20 something for a minute there LMAO.

Going to knock off the 3 children books and try and listen to/read the rest of this book Im working on.

Jurrasic Park was a good book Jody, I was surprised I enjoyed it too when I read it.

Sabrina, thanks for taking care of the spreadsheet :-)

message 35: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 63 comments I just finished Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Overlapping tasks ❄
#1 – I’d started this before the read-a-thon began so only 170 pages count
#22 – I’m using it towards the 2018 ATY challenge, this book fits prompt #25 which is to read a book with an antagonist/villain point of view

Other possible tasks this book might fit:
#7 – child main character (Sydney is described as being in 8th grade which I believe is approximately 13; the book was published in 2013 so her date of birth would be around 2000).
#11 – borrowed from the library
#23 – the author was new to me

You can count on me for 3 children's books by the end of today as well. My kids are 9, 7, & 5 and we'll be spending 4 hours in the car today--we will definitely be reading some books! :)

message 36: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Hello, I've updated the spreadsheet, which all who have requested access should be able to see now. I have books down for multiple categories just in case we need to make switches.

As of now #7 and #19 as complete, awaiting board changes!

We're also about a 1/3 of the way to our first page goal, and a1/3 of the way to our first audio goal!

message 37: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I finished Harvey Kurtzman's Marley's Ghost which is a graphic novel and 130 pages.

I also did the grinch book tag today

message 38: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Hangovers at 43 are a whole other level Tracy...

message 39: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Aaaand, I've just hit my 9 hours of audio.

I think last time, once we'd done that, we could convert audio to pages, so I'll start doing that for the rest of the book. 🙂

message 40: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments Do we add our books to the spreadsheet ourselves? How do we submit for tasks? Or know which ones are complete?

message 41: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Joanne- just comment here what you have done- pages read, books completed, and games participated. Then Sabrina will update the spreadsheet and then Laura will update the first post and remove the appropriate numbers.

message 42: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments Ok thanks

message 43: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I finished The Last Black Unicorn it works for the blue or purple cover or a new to me author. It was 288 pages.

message 44: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Great I've updated the spreadsheet. we have purple/blue cover, character born after 2000, different country, beautiful cover, and new author boxes pending mod approval. I just finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (and no I'm not okay), so I'm counting that for different country, but could also work for reject prompt if we need it there instead.

I'll update my page count by the end of the day bc I think I'm gonna start Deathly Hallows like right now lol.

message 45: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments Finished Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. It's 195 pages.

The only thing I can see that it works for is
A book by a new author (one you haven't read before)

message 46: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Have any of your guys' books counted for the ATY challenge? Prompts 4,7, 11, 16,18, 19, and 23 are pending approval.

message 47: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments Annihilation would work for #38: a science fiction book

message 48: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Ohhh Sabrina. I can’t say anything. But I can say thatI am very envious that you don’t have to wait two years for the seventh book - I had never ever been so excited about the release of anything as I was for the Deathly Hallows. (My absolute most anticipated release was of course my baby, but she came two years later 😂).

message 49: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments Jody wrote: "Ohhh Sabrina. I can’t say anything. But I can say thatI am very envious that you don’t have to wait two years for the seventh book - I had never ever been so excited about the release of anything a..."

Haha I already know about a lot of the deaths that will happen. The one death I didn't know about was in book 6 actually! I thought it was gonna be undone actually but alas.

The deaths in book 7 are gonna hurt much much worse though.

message 50: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 393 comments I just finished Sadie! It was so good. I'll use it for the reject square - a book recommended by a booktuber.
