I think id the task just wanted opposite words in the title it would work, but because it says "opposite pairings" I think you need the two words together

Interesting. It is actually another word for a minor crash (usually a car)

(not meaning to argue, just thinking about this some more — I don’t even have the book from th library yet ;D)
Regardless of how much the book is set in Australia VS India, the task doesn’t actually say “takes place in Australia or NZ”, it says *based* in Australia or NZ — which Saroo Brierly definitely is, having been raised there since Age 5, and still living there, i.e., this book is about a guy based in Australia, and covers his life there as well as his journey to the India of his origins.
And the movie was *produced* in Australia, even if what’s on screen is only partially taking place there...

🤪 I thought (was hoping?) you were going to say you misspelled it and it should have been 'binge'.
Alysa wrote: "And the movie was *produced* in Australia, even if what’s on screen is only partially taking place there... ..."
oh, I thought you were asking as the movie wasn't produced in Australia? (I didn't go and check where it was produced)
But I don't really understand the difference you are saying between "takes place in" or "based in". To me they mean the same. If a book is "based in" Australia, that means it is taking place here. Maybe that word difference is cultural, but that was the meaning of the task

Lol, I was asking specifically about the *book* being Australian enough.
The movie was produced in Australia. I did a lot of research online about it. Australian writers/directors/producers, though they did have some money from international companies (like most movies these days). Filmed in Australia and India (presumably; I haven’t seen it so I don’t know the ratio) but it is considered an Australian film according to Wikipedia for one, which calls it “one of the highest-grossing Australian films of all time.”
I had never heard of either this book or the movie until the other day when I quite literally Googled “Australian book film adaptations” and found this article:
https://theconversation.com/do-film-a...

There is no cultural word difference; most people would interpret “based in” and “takes place in” as the same. Although I think “set in” is closer to “taking place in”, due to its reference to “setting”; “based in” has more of a reference to “base”, implying the ability to move around elsewhere at will.
I was therefore suggesting an alternate interpretation, on the grounds that this is a non-fiction memoir by a person based in Australia who is legally and who considers himself to be Australian (Wikipedia calls him “an Indian-born Australian”), whose experience/story is based in Australia even as at some point in the book he also travels to India. Like, if I wrote a memoir I would say my personal story is “based in” New York, even though significant parts of it might take place elsewhere. The need for this alternate interpretation would only even be relevant if it turns out that more than half of the book takes place outside of Australia.
Re their being a “significant portion in India”, well, yes, that is what I said in my original question. That’s why I was asking if it (the book) seems Australian enough. Not having read it, I can only guess as to what percentage of the book actually takes place there. It could very well turn out that like 90% of this book does in fact take place in Australia, and my question is a moot point! I just like to try to be sure of task fit in advance, especially before I go tracking down books I don’t already own. Perhaps this is still Cutthroat Withdrawal 🙂
But if none of this is okay with you, then I will still possibly read it for the bonus task instead (i.e., Indian orphan gets taken to live permanently in Australia), if my other book for the bonus ends up being unavailable/DNF/whatever :)
There are plenty of other books that fit Task #4 — just none that I am really interested in.
(Too bad I recently reread Hating Allison Ashley w/my daughter! I hadn’t read it in decades, and didn’t even know that it had since been turned into a movie!)

I think because the task is "Read a book based in Australia or New Zealand that was turned into a movie produced in Aus/NZ"
It is not saying "read a book where the person is based in...."
It is the BOOK that is based in, set in, whatever you want to call it ;)
I haven't read the book, but the movie has quite a lot in India which is why I don't think it would not fit that part of the criteria. Someone else here who has read the book may be able to jump in though

Is it enough for a book to have originally been published in a different language?
I read The Alchemist by Coelho. The original Spanish title is O Alquimista.

No, because that is really just a translation. it is more something like Northern Lights which has now been published as The Golden Compass or The House at Riverton and The Shifting Fog. You will see it marked as "original title" on the main book page on GR

Thanks! I've done the January bonus task now but the spreadsheet seems to have doubled up on my points so it's given me 500 rather than 250. I don't mind the extra points but I would prefer to get them for actually reading the books :D

Hi Lucy - the January bonus task only requires one book ;)
So you should be using your second book for a different task

Not so much easier when the one book you choose is really not working for you, like mine was, lol. Forced myself to read more than usual just so I could move on to something better quickly!

Yes, Stacie. The only requirement is to volunteer so provided you volunteered and read the book you can claim that task

I must have just assumed it was like the December task! That explains it, I'll change it.

And for task #4 can I use The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty? The movie adaptation hasn’t been released yet but it’ll be set in Australia.

If you check the FAQ at the start of this thread (copied below)
◈Q: For the January bonus, do they have to move during the course of the book or can it be talked about? Example from the text: Tex had moved to Australia when he was 5 after his parents died.
◈A: Yes they need to move during the book. It is worth lots of points so is meant to be a bit difficult 😉
So if the transportation is just mentioned and doesn't happen in the book it won't count for that task, but we have said that The Light Between Oceans is ok for task 4
In terms of The Husband’s Secret I can't see anything suggesting it is produced in Australia. IMDB has it listed as USA

I guess you could interpret the task either way. One is literally - they never leave the house in the book - and the other being that they are a person who does not leave their house... but during the book there may be a time they are forced to
I'm ok with it being a person who doesn't leave their house, even if they are forced to at some point in the story, and then they come back in again (I'm thinking woman in the window, for example).

thanks for trying

Yeah, quite a lot of books have people who are recluses/have agoraphobia leave the house at some point in the book, even if it's by force. I'll take it, thank you!

Same has happened to mine! since I read it, it has dropped to #3!

Yes you can as lists are changing :)

So I have to scan the list to actually find the highest rated books. Is anyone else having this issue?
