I just discovered a new book, Welcome to Miskatonic University: Fantastically Weird Tales of Campus Life, for any of my fellow weird fiction fans. Evidently it was a Kickstarter - I'm not familiar with any of the authors, but I'm usually up for anything eldritch, and this definitely fits the prompt!

Turns out this is now the last prompt I need to finish! I really wanted to count the ARC of The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep I just read for this one, but only 2-3 scenes in the whole book were actually set at the university, even though one of the major characters teaches there.

I'm falling back on that re-read of Gaudy Night after all. (Which is fine, I'm probably overdue to re-read some Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries--I just would have re-read in some kind of order if I weren't feeling impatient to finish the challenge with being so close to the end.)

When I first saw this prompt I thought of Chris Brookmyre's Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks. I read it a while ago and thought it was very funny. I don't know if it helped that it was set at my alma mater though.

While reading through the above list, I realized that I read a book earlier this year that fits this category better than the book I used. So I'm switching. If you've been reading the Richard Castle series (yes, the Richard Castle of TV's "Castle"), Crashing Heat is set at his alma mater.

Oh, my gosh! This list made me remember having read Commencement about 9 years ago. I loved that book and would highly recommend it for this prompt!

I read The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I'm normally put off by big books, but this came with it's praises sung by my friend who has a track record of recommending me books that end up on my favourites list so I was interested to read it. Plus, I enjoyed The Goldfinch last year so I was willing to brave the tome. This has hallmarks of books I haven't liked in the past though - rich college kids, a heavy dose of references to the ancient classics and a touch of fantasy. Thankfully, those elements worked well in this book, and I was utterly captivated. The pages flew by, I could have kept reading this far beyond the end. This book is proof that you don't need to like or relate to characters in order to be completely consumed by their story. And what a story it is. With mysterious teachers, ancient rituals and friends with more than one face, nothing is what it seems and you have to second guess every twist and turn. All you know going in to it is that Bunny is dead, and that he was murdered. Everything else plays out, dark and rich, as you hear Richard's account. I am mind blown that this was Tartt's debut.

I just finished Bunny which is set at a university. The main character is in grad school. It's not for everyone as it's a bit of a mind trip and I still don't completely understand it. At least I can check it off the list!

Has anyone read Blood & Ivy: The 1849 Murder That Scandalized Harvard? I've had this on my to-read list for a while and was curious if others thought "enough" of the story takes place on Harvard's campus? From the description, it seems pretty central to the story so I've got my fingers crossed but figured I'd see what others say.

I had completely forgotten the Heather Wells series (which would also work for amateur detective). I only had one left so I read The Bride Wore Size 12 (which would also have worked for a wedding). I really like that series a lot. Heather has a lot of moxie.

For this prompt I read We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. It's a contemplation on grief that takes place on a college campus over winter break. I highly recommend. You could also use it for a book read in the season it's set since it's almost winter!

I know most people have moved their focus to next year's challenge, but I'm trying to find a shorter book (200 pages or less) that fits this prompt. I'm so close to finishing this year's challenge with no book repeats, but I don't think I can finish if I can't find a shorter book for this prompt as well.

Don't know what kind of books you like, but I read The Siren and the Sword. I would put it somewhere between romance and erotica. Guy finds out he's magical and attends a secret magic university hidden within Harvard, where there's a bunch of different kinds of magics including one that uses sexual energy. I rather enjoyed it, especially the later books in the series, as a whole they had a really good overall story and plot. It's 228 pages, but a pretty quick read.
