Ezi, I've had to change the book I'm reading for this roll. I could not make myself finish reading The Flirt. In fact, I don't think I'll read any more from that author. Poor writing. Poor characterization. Poor everything. In my humble opinion :)
I'm now reading Shakespeare's Landlord. I have edited my original post.

This is probably a case of it's me not you. A few days ago a read a similar sci-fi story - bandits on the run, one MC a species no one is familiar with, and I didn't like it. That lingering dislike probably effected my opinion of this book. I didn't like either of the characters in this story and it's just hard to be interested in a book when you don't care about any of the characters.

Review: I have read this series several times. I have to admit that I enjoy the characterization more than the plot. Something horrific had happened to the main character about 5 years before the beginning of this book. I love how the author describes the main character, her issues, her coping skills and how she tries to fit in with the inhabitants of Shakespeare, Arkansas. And, of course, how she solves the crime.

I really enjoyed this. It wasn't anything amazing, but I really liked Olivia & Jaxson. The story was simple and quick. There was the typical instant attraction and typical witch vs. shapeshifter. I wish the subplot of the missing shapeshifters was expanded on, but I feel you will get more of that when you continue with the series. Which I'd like to do. :-)

This story was really entertaining until we got to the end. I am not sure how I feel about their happy ending.
Blair Walker was a girl who followed all of high society rules until playing nice led her to losing her dreams to a cheater. So Blair decided that she will not follow her list of how to behave and just live without those constraints.
Life as a rebel led her to Richard Stratton who was looking for someone to help him grow his online business and this fit into Blair's new direction. This professional relationship begins to thrive until they began fighting their growing attraction. I liked them together but I am not a fan of office romances since they have a tendency to get messy when people break up. These sort of relationships are bad for business.
I really liked the new Blair until she threw a couple of unprofessional fits at end of the book because of her feelings for her boss Richard. (view spoiler) I was embarrassed for her and for Richard.
I was proud, happy and intrigued by the new Blair. It showed development and the maturity of the character. She was likable even with the list because she was a fundamentally good person. Richard was a good character as well. He was considerate, thoughtful and a great boss.
It worked out in the end but I didn't like her doing the opposite of what her list would have told her to do. The list wasn't bad, I think she just needed to learn not to be so rigid. I liked some aspects of the list but clearly she wanted to do opposite of those.
This audiobook was easy to follow and was a fun listen to me.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Book: World After
Qualification: Penryn & the End of Days #2
Pages: 320
Read: 09/19/2018
Rating & Review: 5 Stars
It's been over two and a half years since I first read this book and the world was just as vivid the second time around! I really fell in love with this dystopian world. I like that the author didn't skimp on the ugly and gritty things that would certainly be present in an apocalyptic environment. I guess I never really thought about it the first time through, but there are some very dark elements in this series. Not just the typical survival and life or death situations but there are other themes like mental illness, abandonment, and morality. I think that one of the things that I love most about this series is the idea of what it is to be human. The world building is really strong. It was so easy to visualize the landscape and the deterioration of human society. As a whole, the premise of the story is fantastic! I adore this story and the plot is so good!
I found myself fully immersed in the characters and the romance this time around as well! I have always been drawn to fierce, snarky, and determined female lead characters. Penryn is just exactly that and I love her! She doesn't back down and she is insanely loyal. I like Raffe and his struggle throughout the series. He is a strong character with a lot of history and pain in his background. I liked his tender moments and the romance that grew between him and Penryn. I liked that the romance was a slow burn. It felt very natural. I also loved the side characters. My favorites are Penryn's family and the Tweedle twins. Penryn's mom was a mentally unstable badass that you just could not predict. Her sister was a broken doll that overcame her obstacles with grace. And the twins were the perfect comedic relief in such a serious story. I really loved the overall theme of family and loyalty throughout the whole series. Penryn took care of her family and protected them and they always did the same for her. And her acquired family of Raffe, the Resistance, and the Watchers was really strong as well. Penryn made a point in the book that the bond of family doesn't only lie in blood.
I definitely recommend this to anyone that has thought about reading it. And even those that haven't! If you enjoy paranormal stories about angels and demons then you'll love this. If you are a dystopian fan, then this would be right up your alley as well. The blending of these genres is in this series is phenomenal!

Vanessa,
I am sorry to hear that. Just drop us a note once in a while and let us know. Is it the stomach bug or cold/strep virus? My youngest go the latter this past week.
I hope they get better so you can rest easier.
For me, this weekend is going to be bananas crazy. Gymnastics tournament, both boys have basketball games on Sat, and then a baseball game on Sunday. I will probably be pretty quiet until Sunday.

I don't have anything positive to note other than I liked the cover and I found the setting interesting. The MC Lucas did not act like an educated adult. The mystery was solved off page and the reader got a synopsis of how that was resolved. I felt like I was reading a story that was not written by an adult, except for the presence of some very explicit sex scenes. It is extremely unlikely that I will continue this series.
I do try hard not to give two star ratings, but I just couldn't give this book a higher rating.

It was mostly stuffy/runny noses with sinus headaches. We are feeling better now, thankfully.
Have fun with your kids' sporting events this weekend!

I liked the twist with Allie but then again I didn't. I liked how her bond was compromised because there was no free will choice but I thought it was silly that she was basically a literal sex magnet. I also found it crazy how much importance was placed on Jess considering how little she was in the series. We got our HEA with this being the end of the series but the ending itself felt rushed.
Overall, I'd give the series 3.5 stars but I have no interest in reading any of the spin offs.

I couldn't put this book down. I didn't know where the author was going with this couple but I enjoyed the journey.
Gypsy Blue was a con-artist who was trying her best to carve out a life with her sister Birdie, while they were on the run.
Her heists and scams put her in the cross-hairs of famed defense attorney Lucian West and now it was time for the blackmailer to become the blackmailed.
Gypsy didn't like having a taste of her own medicine and it was a constant battle of wills. Unfortunately for her, she was dealing with a man of iron will and he held all the cards, including evidence that could land her prison.
Gypsy now had to learn how to deal with her life as someone else's puppet. Meanwhile, Lucian got to know Gypsy and saw there was more than meets the eye.
This book was about the healing and redemption of two broken souls that had to learn to trust people again. They had different traumatic events to overcome, but as they became vulnerable to each other, tender moments led to their bonding.

Book: Nightblood
How it fits: Frostblood Saga #3
Pages: 448
Date Read: 9/23/18
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: This was a very satisfying conclusion to the Frostblood Saga! The ending really does the series justice. I had been highly anticipating this final book of this series since I finished Fireblood, and I am glad that it did not disappoint.
While there weren't many new locations in the story from the first two books, the world building stayed the course. The reader definitely felt the cold in Tempesia, the ocean breeze on the ship, and the rocky cliff beneath their limbs on the island. The world building is very atmospheric. I very much like the addition of mythology in this world. The gods and goddesses are not based on any known mythology (at least not that I know of) and their stories help shape this world and the story as a whole.
I was pleasantly surprised by the development of the plot. There were so many shocking plot twists that I definitely was not expecting, which made the reading experience that much better. I hate predictable stories unless they are done exceptionally well, but this book in anything but predictable. I liked many of the major plot points that are discovered by the end of the book. They were creative and flowed very well with the story. The foreshadowing throughout the series really pays off in this! Overall, I really liked the premise behind this book series as well.
The characters in this series are a delight! Their personalities really shine through. I love how Ruby is a firecracker. Pun definitely intended. Arcus is protective and responsible and his love for Ruby radiates from him. I adore Kai's cocky attitude and his softer side that he only seems to have for Ruby. The chemistry between Arcus and Ruby is off the charts incredible! I adore this book couple like you wouldn't believe. I enjoyed the character arcs. Ruby struggling with the darkness inside of her. Arcus trying to manage his responsibilities and still be there for Ruby while she is struggling. And Arcus overcoming his fear of losing her. The characters had so much emotion and I enjoyed their journeys.
The romance was pretty exciting, at least in the beginning. I loved seeing Kai and Arcus's jealousy toward each other over Ruby. I love how this was kind of a love triangle and wasn't at the same time. Both men loved Ruby, but she only had eyes for one of them and it was perfectly clear the whole time. She certainly had feelings for both men but was only in love with one of them. I liked the progression of this piece of the story.
The only thing that I actually disliked about the book was the lack of finality regarding Kai and Ruby's friendship. In the epilogue, Ruby and Kai don't speak at all and I think that a few final words between them would have eased my heart. It is clear that they are still friends, but the final feeling is not satisfying. I needed a firm confirmation that they were going to remain close friends even across a distance.
Overall, this book and this series as a whole was such a joy to read! Seriously. If you enjoy epic fantasy with witty dialogue, lovable characters, a vibrant world, and a compelling love story then don't hesitate to pick up this series! I can't wait to read what Elly Blake writes next!
