Kate | 646 comments Thanks Lamilla.
I'm also looking at the colour bingo board that Jamie has put on the FaceBook page. I'll set up a post for it here.

Kate | 646 comments I'm not sure I'll be able to participate much in the July readathon as I'm away for some of the weekend. So I'm making the most of the pre-readathon challenges.

For the colour challenge I'll be doubling up. E.g. I'm currently reading a book with a teal and orange cover so I'll use it for both squares. I'll never read 25 books in July so its the only way I'll be able to get a bingo!
Feel free to copy & paste my template.

Kate | 646 comments I'm going to be travelling during most of the readathon tomorrow. If I get a chance to read a few pages here and there I'll be trying to complete my current 2 books:

Calling the Shots: My Autobiography by Sue Barker
An Englishman in the Midi by John P. Harris

I won't have a chance to sort snacks etc. I'll just update my stats later.

Good luck everyone taking part.

message 508: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Thanks Cathy, Erin and Susy.

I'm back home at last!
I'm going to read for a couple of hours now and hopefully catch up a bit!

message 509: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments I've finished the last 13 pages of Calling the Shots: My Autobiography by Sue Barker.
So even if I don't manage to read any more tonight I can count this as a success!

Exactly!
See you back in October hopefully!

Kate | 646 comments I'm back and hoping to have a successful readathon this month.
I've been asked to dog sit so I shouldn't get disturbed! Unless by a furry four-legged friend!

I still have to work out my TBR but I am currently reading A Secret History of Witches.
I also have The Vampire Lestat waiting and Gobbolino the Witch's Cat for old times sake.
So I have a very Halloween heavy selection. Not sure how many I'll have read by the time the readathon comes around but I'm sure to add more to give me a wider selection for mood reading.

message 512: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Good to see you back Kate!
Getting disturbed by furry four legged friends is always good!
I have a feeling I won’t be prepared at all this time as I’m participating in 12 readathons (Dewey’s not included) so I’m pretty occupied with that (and work) lol

message 513: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments 12? That's insane Susy!! lol
I am doing Hocus Pocus (Team Trick or Treat)
And TBR Harvest (collecting the black cats from the corn maze and collecting items on the Trick or Treat board)
That's enough for me!

message 514: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments I’m in both of those too plus

Battle of the Monsters
Trick or Treatathon
Horrorathon
Halloweenathon
Whodunitathon
Gothtober
The Dark Tower Readathon
Do You Like Scary Movies?
Go Green
Fablen

Cathy (cathepsut) | 577 comments Is The Vampire Lestat a re-read? I used to love the book 30 years ago, but my fairly recent re-read did not go as well…

message 517: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Thanks Lamilla! I'm looking forward to it.

Hi Cathy, I have only read the first one Interview with the Vampire and that was a good few years ago. I've been saving this one for October, it felt right for the Halloween Deweys!

message 518: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 577 comments The first season of the Vampire Lestat TV adaptation was surprisingly good.

I picked up a selection from a horror bingo card that is going to haunt me, I think. Mary Ann Cotton: Dark Angel: Britain's First Female Serial Killer by Martin Connolly. True oohs and ahhs.

Enjoy your October reads!

message 520: by Kate (last edited Oct 25, 2024 10:46AM) (new)

Kate | 646 comments So here is my potential TBR:

A Secret History of Witches By Louisa Morgan (To finish)
The Vampire Lestat By Anne Rice (I'm only about 50 pages in and its about 600 long so my goal will be to read a good chunk of it)
Gobbolino the Witch's Cat By Ursula Moray Williams (to start & finish, old kids book, re-read from years ago!)
Eric by Terry Pratchett (always like to have a TP on the list and this is a short one I could start & finish if the mood takes me)
The Book Thief By Markus Zusak (unlikely to start but on hand just in case)
The Gangster By Clive Cussler (also on hand for a mood read if needed)

My usual targets are to read for 10 hours and read 500 pages. Not sure if I'll meet either of these but I'll give it a go!

A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan The Vampire Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles, #2) by Anne Rice Gobbolino the Witch's Cat by Ursula Moray Williams Eric (Discworld, #9) by Terry Pratchett The Book Thief by Markus Zusak The Gangster (Isaac Bell #9) by Clive Cussler

Kate | 646 comments I'll be dog sitting this weekend so I'm hoping to use it as a bit of a retreat and hopefully won't have too many disturbances although a friend has said they may pop in during the evening.

My drink, food and snacks list looks something like this:

Lemonade, Water, Coffee
Chicken casserole
Dips & Houmous - carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, pepper, cheese straws, BBQ Pringles
Green & Black's miniature chocolate bar selection
Walnuts

Ah, friends who pop in....

But the dog sitting retreat idea sounds perfect, maybe the dog will cuddle during reading.

Looks like delicious snacks and drinks as well!

Cathy (cathepsut) | 577 comments Is some of it audio, when you go walkies? 🐕

message 525: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 159 comments I love Lestat! He was my imaginary boyfriend when I was a teenager! 😝
A secret history seems interesting…

message 526: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Thanks Erin, the dog (Luna) is cuddly so I expect she'll end up on my lap!

Cathy I didn't plan any audio into my list. I guess I still have a bit of time to find something! Thanks for the idea.

Vavita I'm almost finished with Secret History and it has been fabulous. Its a strong 4 star, bordering 5. Not so sure about Lestat although I've read Interview with the Vampire, this one is a bit of a chore and I read the first 10 pages 3 times before it sank in! I'm hoping a good run at it during a couple of sprints will give me the oomph I need!

message 527: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 159 comments Yeah! Her books have not aged well. I guess long time ago they were a surprise to the reader. There are so many options for gothic dark vampires that her books don’t offer anything new. I was supposed to reread all her books and quit. They meant a lot to me when I read them all the first time in Highschool

message 528: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments I guess its not always a good idea to revisit books you loved. Hopefully you still love the memories of those first reads.

I don't often read Vampire books but have saved it for October so we'll see how I get on. I'm glad I made a start pre-readathon. I find it difficult to start a bigger book during the readathon because it doesn't feel like I progress much! Nice to have 1 or two near to finishing or short so I feel like I'm doing well!

message 529: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 577 comments I find audio really useful, when doing something that doesn‘t take brain power. Cleaning! Or walking somewhere… cooking… hanging up the laundry… 😏

Same, I gave up as well. I think after the third book ? Or did it make it to the fourth one? When I was a teenager, that was nothing else like it.

message 541: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Thanks everyone. Well I had a bit of a slow start as I had a phone call 10 minutes before the start which went on until 30 minutes in so I may have to add half an hour to end tomorrow to make up for that!

Otherwise, I'm now well underway with my reading and close to finishing my first book.

message 542: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Sounds good, Kate! I'm a long way to finishing any book. Usually I read a couple of books up until the last 100-200 pages which I then finish during Dewey's, but participating in Fablen Readathon and a very busy time at work prevented that.

message 543: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Latest update. I have now finished 2 books:
The Secret History of Witches which I had about 70 pages left at the start of the readathon.
Gobbolino the Witch's Cat which I started and finished during the readathon.
I'm making some progress with The Vampire Lestat
But now I think its time to start Eric as its 10pm here and I need an easy read for late night.
