From Sea to Shining Sea - Washington
Duration: May 01, 2021 - Jun 30, 2021
150 p.min.
10/10
1. Washington is the 42nd state of the United States. It joined the rest of the union on November 11, 1889. Olympia is its capital city. Washington is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. The state was made out of the Western part of Washington territory, which was ceded by Britain in 1846 in accordance with the Oregon Treaty in the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute. Washington was nicknamed the Evergreen State by C. T. Conover, pioneer Seattle realtor and historian, for its abundant evergreen forests.
✒ Read a book in which there is a dispute of some kind (let us know what it is) - a dispute over a brother's wife in Cold Comfort by Charles Todd-5/7/21-
or- read a book whose cover has an evergreen tree (post the cover) -or- read a book with the word GREEN intact in its author's name (compound words are fine).
2. Washington is the 18th largest and the 13th most populous state in the United States. Approximately 60 percent of Washington's residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area, the center of transportation, business, and industry. The remainder of the state consists of deep temperate rainforests in the west; mountain ranges in the west, central, northeast, and far southeast; and a semi-arid basin region in the east, central, and south, given over to intensive agriculture. Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano, is the state's highest elevation, at almost 14,411 feet, and is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous U.S.
✒ Read a book with a 6 and a 0 in the year it was first published (tell us the year) -or- read a book in which the main character works in or owns a farm -or- read a book whose author's initials are in the word STRATOVOLCANO (middle initials count if the author uses any).- The Price of Paradise by Susana López Rubio-6/11/21
3. Washington is the northwesternmost state of the contiguous United States. It borders Idaho to the east, bounded mostly by the meridian running north from the confluence of the Snake River and Clearwater River, except for the southernmost section where the border follows the Snake River. Oregon is to the south, with the Columbia River forming the western part and the 46th parallel forming the eastern part of the Oregon-Washington border. To the west of Washington lies the Pacific Ocean. Its northern border lies mostly along the 49th parallel, and then via marine boundaries through the Strait of Georgia, Haro Strait, and Strait of Juan de Fuca, with the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north.
✒ Read a book with parallel lines of some sort on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which a water body is important for any reason (tell us how your book fits) -Many of the characters are fishermen in the Mediterranean Sea in The House by the Medlar Tree by Giovanni Verga-5/28/21
or- read a book whose main character's initials are BC or WA (tell us their name).
4. Washington's state bird is the goldfinch. Its state tree is the Western Hemlock. The state flower is the coast rhododendron. The state fruit is the apple. Washington State is the only state named after a US president, and its state flag is the only flag that pictures a president. The state motto is "Al-ki", which means by and by in Chinook jargon.
✒ Read a book with a president (or equivalent in the country the book is set in) character (they must have lines of dialogue, may be real or imagined) -Chilean President Pinochet is a character in My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel 7/9/21
-or- read a book with a gold object on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a repeated word in the title (ignore The, A, An and, And).
5. Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, about 98 miles south of Seattle. The volcano is located in the Cascade Range and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mount St. Helens is known for its major eruption on May 18, 1980, the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. The eruption was preceded by a two-month series of earthquakes and steam-venting episodes, caused by an injection of magma at shallow depth below the volcano that created a large bulge and a fracture system on the mountain's north slope. An earthquake on May 18 caused the entire weakened north face to slide away, creating the largest landslide in recorded history. The volcano exploded as well, depositing ash in 11 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. Approximately 57 people were killed directly. Hundreds of square miles were reduced to wasteland, causing over $1 billion in damage; thousands of animals were killed; and Mount St. Helens was left with a crater on its north side.
✒ Read a book in which a large-scale natural disaster occurs (let us know what it is) -a tale of climate change, acidifcation of the seas and more natural disasters as they are occurring in A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough 12/1/21
-or- read a book with fire or a ring shape prominently displayed on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book written by an author named Helen (reasonable variations okay).
6. Pike Place Market is a public market in Seattle. It opened on August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers' markets in the United States. It is Seattle's most popular tourist destination and the 33rd most visited tourist
✒ Read a book with a fish in its title or on the cover (for the title option, the fish needs to be named, like Pike or Salmon; for the cover option, post the cover) -or- read a book in which the main character owns/runs/works in one of the kind of businesses mentioned above (tell us which) -or- read a book which you feel was stretched like gum despite having little to tell.- this, the second volume....got tiresome with similar tales of princesses and sultans and fantasy creatures- Arabian Nights: More Marvels and Wonders of the Thousand and One Nights, Volume II of II by Jack D. Zipes-10/13/21
7. Kennewick Man is the name given to the skeletal remains of a prehistoric Paleoamerican man found on a bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick on July 28, 1996. It is one of the most complete ancient skeletons ever found. Kennewick Man became the subject of a controversial nine-year court case between the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), scientists, and Native American tribes who claimed ownership of the remains. In February 2004, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that a direct cultural link between any of the Native American tribes and Kennewick Man could not be proved because of the age of the remains. Its ruling allowed scientific study to continue while the USACE retained custody of the remains. In June 2015, it was made public that scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark determined through DNA from 8,500-year-old bones that Kennewick Man is, in fact, related to modern Native Americans, including the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation from the region in which his bones were found. In September 2016, the US House and Senate passed legislation to return the ancient bones to a coalition of Columbia Basin tribes for reburial according to their traditions.
✒ Read a book whose title contains a word that can be made out of the letters in KENNEWICK (letters can only be used as many times as they appear - think scrabble) -or- read a book in which a court case is tried -one of the Burgess Boys' nephews is tried in The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout-5/30/21
or- read a book with bones prominently shown on the cover (post the cover)
8. Washington State is one of the largest suppliers of apples in the world. Red Delicious accounts for 48 percent of apples exported to other countries. With 43,000 acres of vineyards, Washington is the second largest premium wine producer in the U.S. The San Juan Islands are known for having the largest concentration of bald eagles in the continental United States. Researchers have logged more than 300 killer whales in the Washington and British Columbia waters. Washington is also home to the Dungeness Spit, the longest natural sand spit in the United States, which stretches 5.5 miles along the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula. The spit is growing in length by around 15 feet each year. Over 50 species of petrified wood are found at the Ginkgo Petrified State Forest, including ginkgo, sweetgum, redwood, Douglas fir, walnut, spruce, elm, maple, horse chestnut, cottonwood, magnolia, sassafras, yew and witch hazel.
✒ Read a book with an apple(s) on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a series book that is larger by at least 15 pages compared to the previous book in the series (tell us the number of pages in both books) - series #3- The Secrets Come Out by Marguerite Abouet-5/1/21-132p....larger by 20 pages than series #2- Aya of Yop City-112p.
or- read a book whose author's first and last initials are found in at least two of the trees mentioned above (eg., Evie Wyld – EW found in sweetgum, redwood, yew and witch hazel; G.A. McKevett – GM found in sweetgum and magnolia).
9. On a stretch of road north of Prosser, Washington, at the base of a small incline (the Prosser road has a helpful START painted across the exact spot), if you shift your car into neutral you will, as if by magic, begin rolling uphill. The phenomenon is actually an optical illusion, known as a magnetic hill, anti-gravity hill or simply gravity hill. In these spots, what appears to be an uphill incline is actually part of a larger downhill incline, misinterpreted by our brains because of the way the slopes are situated mixed with little or no view of the horizon line. So, it looks as if objects are defying gravity, a natural illusion that’s been tricking and wowing onlookers at these curious spots for centuries.
✒ Read a nonfiction book tagged SCIENCE on its main GR page- A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough 12/1/21
-or- read a book with some kind of hidden image or optical illusion on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which a character is a magician (not a sorcerer or a witch who can do logic defying magic)
10. Under Washington state law, a vending machine can be attached to a public utility pole, but it must be mounted at least twelve feet off the ground. It is illegal to use an X-Ray to see if your shoes fit properly. It is also illegal to damage or destroy another person's beer bottle without written consent (but you can get off by paying a penalty of 50 cents per violation). You may not buy a mattress on a Sunday. In Wilbur, you cannot ride an ugly horse. In Seattle, it is illegal to carry a fishbowl or aquarium on a bus because the sloshing noise may disturb other passengers.
✒ Read a book whose cover shows a utility pole of some kind (post the cover) -or- read a book with a X somewhere on the cover (it should be a part of the cover design and not the title/subtitle/author's name/blurb; post the cover) -or- read a book with what you think is an ugly cover (post the cover).-Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley-5/4/21-

CHALLENGE #827-CCC

Olympics #23: Skateboarding
Timeframe: 5/1/21 to 5/31/21
150 p. min.
TASKS:
1. Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2021. It is one of five new sports added to the Olympic program specifically for 2021, rather than as a permanent sport. There will be 80 athletes evenly split between men and women competing in park and street disciplines.
🛹 Read a series book #5 (tell us the series) - #5 in Mrs. Pollifax series- Mrs. Pollifax on Safari by Dorothy Gilman -6/14/21
or - a book that has an athlete main character (tell us who and what sport).
- Park
2. PARK terrain courses are based on concrete bowls from 5 to 10 feet (1.52 to 3.01 meters) in depth, with steep sides and nearly vertical at the top. Park competitors almost never push to generate speed and frequently perform tricks by grabbing the board with their hands, also utilizing specialized techniques such as pumping and carving. Skaters send themselves to dizzying heights, performing jaw-dropping spins and tricks midair, and then gracefully bring themselves back down to the bowl to do it all over again on the other side.
🛹 Read a book whose title starts with a letter in PARK (disregard A, An, The) - A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry-6/1/21
or - a book with something made of concrete on the cover (show us the cover).
- Street
3. STREET courses are designed to replicate real-world urban terrain and consist of stair sets, rails, gaps, benches, ledges, and planters on riding surfaces of variable elevations up to approximately 8 feet (2.44 meters). The foundation of modern street skateboarding is a trick called the Ollie, which allows skaters to lift the skateboard off the ground using only their feet, thereby providing many opportunities for tricks where skateboarders spin and flip their boards, and leap up, down, onto or over every obstacle in their path.
🛹 Read a book with a one-word title - Mountolive by Lawrence Durrell-6/7/21
or - a book with a cityscape or a street scene on the cover (show us the cover).
4. Each of the competitions is comprised of two rounds: prelims and finals. In the prelims, 20 skaters will compete in four heats, with the top eight skaters progressing to the finals. In each round, skaters will perform two 45-second runs and five tricks. Five judges use a 0-100.00 point scale and score athletes based on speed, difficulty, originality, timing, stability and the overall flow of the performance. One important skill judges will be looking for is the ability to seem suspended in midair.
🛹 Read a book with "2" or "0" in the total number of pages (tell us how many) - The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney-5/25/21-2014-224p.
or - a book with something suspended in air on the cover (be creative but show us the cover).
5. There is no single person credited with inventing skateboarding. The actual invention of the skateboard appears to have been a spontaneous occurrence in the United States sometime in the 1950’s, fueled by the rise of surf culture and the modification of Depression-era kick scooters. Skateboarding rapidly evolved from a fad to the center of mainstream youth culture in the early 2000's. It developed independent of the structure that defines traditional organized sports; instead it has been a grassroots movement driven by youth, with the vast majority of first-time participants under the age of 18.
🛹 Read a book marked YOUNG ADULT on its main genre page - or - a book originally published between 1950 and 2010 (tell us what year)- Urn Burial by Kerry Greenwood-6/1/21-187p- pub. 1/1/1996-

Along the Silk Road: Uzbekistan's Cuisine
June 1, 2021 - July 31, 2021
100p. min
8/8
1. PLOV
If there is one dish that has become synonymous with Uzbek cuisine, it would be plov. It is a hearty rice dish that has hundreds of variations, many dictated by the region you are in. In fact, it is so important to the culture that it is featured as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Its main ingredients are lamb or beef fried in a large kazan (cauldron) with onions, garlic, carrots, and peppers. It can be served additionally with kazy (local sausage), eggs and, occasionally, lemons. It is available in most restaurants but for the real “local” experience go to one of the city’s Plov Centers and see it made from start to finish. Just one whiff will tell you why this is one of the top Uzbek dishes you must try!
*Read a book where the MC eats an "ethnic" food (tell us what) or read a book that starts with a letter in PLOV (ignore A, An or The).-
Pereira Declares: A Testimony by Antonio Tabucchi-8/10/21
2. MANTI
Manti is probably Uzbekistan’s most beloved appetizer. It’s basically a large steamed dumpling filled with ground meat, most usually lamb. Extra fat is often added to the dumplings to enhance the flavor. Some restaurants also serve vegetarian Manti filled with radish, pumpkin, and other vegetables. Most are served with yogurt for dipping, and they are traditionally eaten without utensils so don’t be afraid to dive right in with your hands. You might find some resemblance to Chinese dumplings since they were brought over from Uighurs who were living in China at the time. It’s also assumed that Manti is derived from the Chinese word Mantou, which are steamed bread buns.
*Read a pre-quel to a series or read a book by one of your most beloved authors (one that you have read at least 5 times).- Urn Burial by Kerry Greenwood-6/1/21
3. SHASHLYK
Shashlik, derived from the word ‘shish kabob’, is wildly popular in Uzbekistan and is not too far off from the shish kebobs in other Central and Eastern European countries. They can be found both in restaurants and at street food vendors. Most of the time it’ll be well spiced and marinated chicken, beef, or lamb skewered on a metal shank and cooked over coals. If you’re feeling overloaded on meat you can often order grilled skewers of potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes, and peppers. You can also find some kebabs that have been breaded, so there’s an added textural element that feels really nice in your mouth!
*Read a book with a skewer, long knife, or sword on the cover or read a book whose authors first and last initials can be found in SHASHLYK.- Double Blank by Yasmina Khadra 6/26/21
4. LAGMAN
Lagman, which means 'stretched dough’, are hand pulled noodles that are served either stir fried or in a soup. In soup form, expect a hearty combination of beef or lamb, vegetables, and a rich broth seasoned with cumin seed, parsley, and basil. For stir fries, there will be all sorts of varieties of meats, veggies, and sauces. The noodles are pan-fried with peppers, onions, tomatoes paste, and whatever other vegetables the kitchen has on hand. It basically tastes like stir-fried spaghetti. And, if you’re lucky, you might find it topped with a fried egg! If you visit Khiva, be sure to try their specialty - green noodles made with dill.
*Read a book with the word NOODLE found in the text (share text) or read a book with an MC whose first name begins with a letter in LAGMAN.-Mani Steinn in Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was by Sjón-6/12/21
5. SHURPA
Known for being the favorite dish of the conqueror, Tamerlane, Shurpa is a lamb soup that you’ll find in almost every eatery in the country. In addition to fatty chunks of lamb, you can expect thick slices of vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and onions. Spices such as fresh dill and parsley are also used to add flavor to the soup. You’ll find that shurpa is cooked differently depending on the season. For example, in the summer apples might be added to the soup, and in the fall it might be turnips. Either way, paired with some fresh bread, it makes a great starter to any meal and during the colder months, a terrific way to warm up.
*Read a book that takes place completely in the summer or winter or read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in SHURPA (tell us where).-Alexandria, Egypt- Mountolive by Lawrence Durrell-6/7/21
6. ACHICHUK
The perfect accompaniment to all of Uzbek’s meat dishes is this simple traditional salad: Achichuk. It’s light, fresh, fragrant, healthy and incredibly tasty! Despite the limited ingredients - tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, salt, basil or cilantro - it is so surprisingly delicious, probably due to the exclusively organic origin of the vegetables that are grown locally. You will see it as an option at most every Uzbek restaurant.
*Read a "light" book (125 - 200 Pages) - A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry-6/1/21-162p.-
or read a book that left you feeling "light" (tell us why).
7. TEA
Uzbekistan has a very strong tea culture and the country holds one of the highest levels of tea consumption per capita in the world. Tea is more than just a beverage – it is a tradition representing friendship and hospitality and is offered to all guests in both the home and in guest houses. It is generally served at the beginning AND end of most meals. In a restaurant, you’ll rarely be able to order just a cup of tea. It will always come in a teapot along with a stack of small bowls (no teacups) equaling the number of people at the table +1. The extra bowl is a brewing cup that is filled with the first pour, which is immediately returned to the teapot. This is repeated 2 or 3 times so the full flavor of the tea can be brought out. Note that Uzbek tea is taken without sugar and it frequently has various spices added for more flavor.
*Read a book with a teapot or a bowl on the cover or read a book that has a three letter word in its title ("The" does NOT count).- Untold Night and Day by Bae Suah - 6/7/21
8. HALVA
The amount and diversity of desserts in Uzbekistan is pretty mind-blowing with a huge variety of sugared nuts, fried dough covered in sugar, and dried fruits. But one dessert you will encounter frequently and worth mentioning is Halva. It’s a dense fudge-like confection that is popular all across the Middle East and Central Asia. It’s typically made by mixing sesame oil or sunflower seed oil with sugar syrup. It can be flavored with cocoa powder, vanilla, chocolate, and chopped nuts, giving each recipe a unique flavor and texture. You’ll find stacks of halva for sale at every major market in Uzbekistan with an endless variety to sample and choose from.
*Read a book with a character that is especially sweet (tell us who) or read a book you felt was dense or heavy (tell us why).- the subject is the aftermath of an atom bomb drop on the city in The Bells of Nagasaki by Takashi Nagai-6/13/21
