Hee, Hee, Hee!!! ;o>

Go on, enlighten us, Poppet ;o>

Google Translate says ... "Goodman good luck" ... ?

message 1158: by theDuke (last edited Aug 09, 2018 06:35AM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments 'spose to say - Good Luck folks!

Google isn't always 100% correct, so it seems.

I've just tried Bing's translator; put the welsh phrase in the first box..& it translated it as...…

…..the Republicans of good luck.

Whit?!

I don't think the word 'folks'..translates very well into other languages!
Pob means good, Lwc is the welsh spelling of Luck, as there isn't a letter k in the welsh alphabet & w is always used in place of u, but I guess the word folks, plural, doesn't exist in the welsh language! Folk does, as that's Gwerin.

message 1159: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments 'folks' is very likely not used as a world-wide term and so does not have a clear or accurate translation ... try putting 'people' or even 'friends' in instead? ;o>

Then by using the word people, it would read as pobl lwc dda! As dda also means 'good' as does da....confusing isn't it! :)

message 1161: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Yeah! - I often had a right job in trying to respond to some of the confused, upset and occasionally angry folk who would mistakenly post their Order issues up on the Amazon Forums. I always felt so sorry for anyone who had posted their frustration or complaint in their own Language or had attempted to do so in very poor and broken English hoping to get some help.

I knew Amazon Customer Services would never read any Forum Posts and that it was very likely too that no-one else would try to respond to them - so I used to use Google Translate to see if I could understand what they were saying, and in what Language, and then I would post back on how to contact Amazon Customer Services in their own Language.

I would check and then recheck each line before posting because Translations could suddenly change into saying something quite different! ;o>

Lez | 7490 comments I think it’s because ‘folk’ is already a collective noun - we don’t refer to a single person as ‘a folk’. Strictly speaking ‘folks’ doesn’t exist as a genuine plural.

It's because translation engines doesn't work from vast databases, rather it uses something called deep learning software. Essentially, it's a form a artificial intelligence. Enough words are programmed into the system, for it to find comparable words to suit, but the software still has to learn sequences of words and phrases..with varying degrees of accuracy. It's not possible to programme all the small changes in words and phrases and word order in a sentence..so hence the inaccuracy of what is given. I don't actually speak welsh..so I've no idea if what I post in welsh is legible to a welsh speaker or not!

I suspect, to whomever you are speaking to, in whatever language...one is probably speaking more in a pidgin form, maybe something like Officer Crabtree did from 'Allo 'Allo! "Gud moaning! I was just pissing the door, and thought i'd take a leak!!" lol!

That said, I have had conversations with folks from foreign lands online using a translator engine..it seems to work well enough. But I can tell from the replies I have had back, that the software ain't perfect...yet...but it is learning!! :)

There lies the issue with translator engines then...it cannot account for words in the English language that do use in phrases, but shouldn't exist. Somehow, I can't see words like innit, kerching or chillaxing translating well into other languages, can you?!

And what about those local urban 'dialects', those 'street' words and phrases? With their differences in meaning; like the word sick...as that can mean good (apparently!), as can the words bad & good meanings be reversed ! Or what about 'Biiatch'?! Try translating that to a Chinese person! :)

Val H. | 22142 comments Quarter-time score:

Essendon Bombers (Val) v St Kilda Saints (Lez)
5.3.33 (Q1) 4.4.28

It's been a spiteful quarter after a late tackle on Essendon's Adam Saad saw him being stretchered off. Didn't look good and the Saints' player has been reported for the offence. I doubt he'll be back on tonight and we've already lost veteran player Brendan Goddard to a knee injury. St Kilda need to take this opportunity.

Val H. | 22142 comments Half-time score:

Essendon Bombers (Val) v St Kilda Saints (Lez)
5.3.33 (Q1) 4.4.28
10.8.68 (Q2) 6.8.44

This is certainly a game of swings and roundabouts. Halfway through the second quarter Essendon had lost a third player in Kyle Langford and St Kilda were in complete control of the game. Then Essendon came back with four unanswered goals, Langford made a miraculous recovery and the natural balance was restored.

5.3.33 (Q1) 4.4.28

14.13.97 (Q3) 7.10.52
18.14.122 (Q4) 11.13.79

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I just noticed that David posted on the other Football Thread over an hour ago - and so I am guessing that he has not checked in on here because he probably thinks that he has already punted earlier on this week?

I have left him a Reminder in a Comment Box on his Profile Page, Val, but he might not have got it set up to receive Instant Inbox Notifications.

SussexWelsh | 7448 comments Will you be joining us on The Football Punt this season, Suzy? You know you want to :-)

message 1179: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh, Poppet, I have thought about it since the last time you asked me - but I'm not kidding when I say that I just haven't got a clue as to how it works. It looks so incredibly complicated, and seems to involve searching out and going on other Websites to be able to put the Punts together, and clearly requires at least some basic knowledge that I really am lacking in.

I'm absolutely spoilt on here with everything all just laid out for me and in trusting in Val to be there to always work it all out afterwards. I don't want to ruin the good thing that you have going on by continually screwing up and having to keep on asking for help every time.

Getting worried about me poor Giants; boy.... do they collect injuries like it's going out of fashion or what?! The Crows didn't get any..not one!

I hope GWS don't lose any more....or they'll struggle in the play offs.

If someone can't manage to take part in a Round then that's okay - but I didn't want him to miss out, first, because he had forgotten and, second, because we had forgotten him in our occasional Reminders to each other as well.
