Val H. | 22142 comments I hope all the above scores are right (let me know if they're not) because that winds up the home and away season so it behoves me to announce the winners. In First Place and repeating his 2012 win, we have Steve who adds $35 to his winnings on behalf of Swags for Homeless. He just pips Tech who has his best finish in 5 years competing and earns $25.00 for Oscar's Law. And in Third Place, we have Duke who can tuck away $15.00 for Insight. Suzy is our Wooden Spooner (again!) and gets $10.00 for Even Keel.

A further winner is Philip. Jack Riewoldt of the Tigers won his third Coleman Medal with 65 goals in 2018, holding off North Melbourne’s Ben Brown, who finished the year with 61. So that's another $15.00 for Canteen.

Congrats to you all the winners and to all of you for participating with gusto once again.

Val H. | 22142 comments We now get a week's rest before the Finals. Tipsters whose teams are still alive are Philip, Sussex, Tech, Foe, Anita and Duke. But remember, all tipsters are still in the competition to pick winners and earn some cash for their charities. There are no prizes for closest margin or highest score, just $15.00 for the tipster who predicts the most wins with the lowest cumulative margins.

Qualifying and Elimination Finals:
(Qualifying: loser gets a second chance)
(Elimination: loser is out of the Finals)

This time I'd like you to choose the winning team AND the margin for ALL FOUR GAMES. Scoring will be one point for every winner picked and a sliding table based on the margins predicted for each game. There will (hopefully) be one winning punter after all games have been played. $15.00 to your charity is up for grabs.

If anyone would like to view the AFL Ladder before submitting next week's tips, it's at
http://www.afl.com.au/ladder

WeeK 1 of the Finals fixtures:

Thursday, Sept 6
First Qualifying Final
Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Hawthorn Hawks (unwanted) at the M.C.G., Melbourne

Friday, Sept 7
First Elimination Final
Melbourne Demons (TheFoe) v Geelong Cats (awaiting MC) at the M.C.G., Melbourne

Saturday, Sept 8
Second Elimination Final
Sydney Swans (Anita) v Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke) at the S.C.G., Sydney

Saturday, Sept 8
Second Qualifying Final
West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech) at Optus Stadium, Perth

If punters could lodge their tips by midnight WEDNESDAY (your time) SEPTEMBER 5th it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 10.15am THURSDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.

Val H. | 22142 comments That's the beauty of this competition - you don't even have to tip and you can still win. Likewise Philip probably has no clue about who Jack Riewoldt is but Canteen are delighted nonetheless. And there's still $$$ around for whoever's team produces the Brownlow medal winner this year (Best & Fairest Player). Unfortunately, the hot favourite is a Hawthorn player so if he wins the money just goes into the pot. I think we all need to get behind Foe's Big Maxy Gawn, because not only is he one of the real characters of the game but he also went to the same school as my kids and boasts he is the only state school (publicly funded) graduate in the league. That may or may not be true. But most talented footballers are poached by private schools with the lure of scholarships so who know? But he loves to take the piss out of himself:

and he CAN play a bit too:

We need confirmation and proof of this ...

Please post up a scanned copy of your Birth Certificate immediately! - LOL!!!

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Ha ha indeed... cos I aint totally sure. Thing is Suze, I'm terrible with birthday dates as my memory's really bad, but Foe wuz born just a few days before meself so that's how I remember... just not sure how many days exactly. Same thing every year - "Happy Birthday Foe... IF today's your birthday!?"

I'm 75% sure it's today if that's of any use

Probably be forgetting my own next in any case so that'll solve this issue. : )

message 1335: by Val (last edited Sep 06, 2018 06:04AM) (new)

Val H. | 22142 comments Brilliant game tonight at the 'G before a crowd of 91, 500 people. The action really amps up in the Finals - what a scrap this was!

2.2.14 (Q1) 2.3.15
5.7.37 (Q2) 3.5.23
10.13.73 (Q3) 5.8.38
13.17.95 (Q4) 9.10.64

Conditions were wet and slippery but the Tigers look unstoppable. Hawthorn threw everything at them but they are such a strong unit, it was all to no avail. The Tigers have earned a week off while Hawthorn live to fight another day. They will play next week against the winner of the Cats/Demons game. Deano was spot on with his prediction of 31 but this week's winner is determined by the results over all four games, so a long way to go yet.

Congratulations to our birthday boys! I knew Blastro's was coming up but didn't realise you were so close together.

message 1336: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments YAYYY!!! - even though the winner will be determined by the final result of all four games, nevertheless ... Congratulations Deano!!! ;o>

message 1342: by [deleted user] (new)

And an even more belated Happy Birthday from me :)

message 1343: by RedJohn (new)

RedJohn | 214 comments Many belated happy returns Foe. 'fraid to say that the clocks start ticking faster now. How'd I know that? Well, just the voice of experience (or summat) I passed your age ?8 years ago!!

message 1344: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22142 comments Tonight's result:

Melbourne Demons (TheFoe) v Geelong Cats (awaiting MC)
5.3.33 (Q1) 0.2.2
5.9.39 (Q2) 2.4.16
6.13.49 (Q3) 3.8.26
10.15.75 (Q4) 6.10.46

Another fiercely contested game. Melbourne never looked like losing but, at the same time, they never seemed to quite shake Geelong. Both teams made elementary mistakes (especially when kicking for goal) but the Dees were a safe bet from the first bounce. So it's season over for Geelong and the Dees will front up against Hawthorn next weekend.

Deano is still looking good but Anita is hot on his tail.

message 1345: by TheFoe (new)

TheFoe | 2638 comments Hooray, up the Demons!! And thanks again for the kind wishes. :-)

I can't quite believe that I'll be 60 in April. My brain thinks I'm about 30 and on Sunday, I'm due to play my first league game for a veterans (over 35) football team that I've recently joined :-)

Lez | 7490 comments You wear it well, SW, your lovely lady is keeping you young! 😀

message 1350: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22142 comments Duke - I don't know if it's too early for you but I'd urge you to tune in to the second half of the Giants/Swans game. You'd be so proud of the effort your young guns are putting in. It's wet and slippery up in Sydney and a low-scoring game as a result, but both sides are giving no quarter and I reckon it'll be a case of which team is left standing. Phil Davis has absolutely shut down Buddy Franklin so far. The only sour note for the Giants is that Josh Kelly is off the ground with a knee problem. I don't think he'll be back.

1.4.10 (Q1) 2.3.15
2.4.16 (Q2) 4.7.31

Can I stand the excitement of another two quarters? Well, here we go.....
