Val H. | 22143 comments Tonight's result:

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
2.3.15 (Q1) 3.3.21
6.7.43 (Q2) 6.4.40
11.11.77 (Q3) 10.5.65
15.19.109 (Q4) 10.6.66

Lez's consistent strategy finally pays off. The Bombers by EXACTLY 43 points means $6.00 is heading to Alzheimer's Australia. Well done Lez!

theDuke | 6491 comments What the heck happened to the Swans in that final quarter? Decided to fly home, by the looks of things! Their finals footy season, is looking shaky now....they've lost their mojo it seems. Still a chance for the bombers to make the 8...they need to get percentages up a bit though.

Well done Lez..bang on the money! :)

Lots of injury problems - like a lot of teams as the season nears the end.

Injury report:

ESSENDON:

"Earlier in the night, defender Matt Dea was ruled out of the rest of the game after being knocked out when he landed awkwardly in a marking contest. But Essendon’s general manager of football, Dan Richardson, said at half-time Dea was okay and would remain at the ground for the rest of the game.
“He’s up and about, so concussed after that marking contest, hit his head on the ground I think, but he’s up walking around now,” Richardson told Channel 7. “So he won’t come back on, but he’ll be okay. He’s up and walking around with the boys, so he’ll stay here.”

Young Bomber Kyle Langford has been cleared of any serious injury after suffering a heavy head knock in Essendon’s 43-point victory over Sydney. Langford was collected by a high bump from Swan Zak Jones – who was immediately reported for rough conduct – in the final term and was sent to hospital after feeling pain moving down his arm from his shoulder. The 21-year-old is expected to recover well and is likely to be available for selection for the side’s clash with Hawthorn next Saturday, suffering only minor whiplash and arm pain.

In a busy night for the medicos, Essendon’s Jake Stringer and Sydney’s Will Hayward were also among players assessed on the sidelines - though both played out the game.

SWANS

Aliir Aliir hobbled off in the second quarter with a knee complaint, but returned to the field. Post-match, coach John Longmire said he didn’t expect any further issues with either Aliir or Harry Cunningham. (Harry Cunningham was another who bravely returned to the action after a heavy knock to the ribs.)

Captain Josh Kennedy needed his right knee strapped in the final term and will need to be monitored through next week.

Longmire said veteran defender Heath Grundy had been ill at half-time and was moved forward to allow the Swans to maintain their rotations. “He was crook at half time and we put him forward and he kicked a goal,” he said. “But he wasn’t feeling great so we didn’t want to put him in the back half after half-time. So he went forward for us, was able to kick a goal because we wanted to have the rotations.”

The Swans have been battered by injuries in the last dew months with premiership players Dan Hannebery, Jarrad McVeigh, Kieren Jack and Sam Reid among the casualties.

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech)
5.2.32 (Q1) 2.31.13
8.3.51 (Q2) 7.1.43

7.10.52 (Q3) 12.11.83
10.17.77 (Q4) 13.12.90

Yet another mixed bag of results. The Pies were only trailing by 4 points at three-quarter time but the Tigers came out firing and blew them away in the final quarter. You've got to admire the Tigers - they never run out of steam, play out each game to the very end.

The Lions weren't disgraced - it's very hard to win at the Cattery.

The Giants made hard work of disposing of the Saints.

The Suns seemed to think the game was over at quarter-time. They just ground to a halt.

The Crows had plenty of chances but slipped behind in the third quarter. They came back hard in the fourth but it was too late. The horse had bolted; all over red rover.

Val H. | 22143 comments When you go to the footy, traditional fare is a meat pie and sauce. You might burn your mouth but you eat it with your hands.

message 1070: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22143 comments It has recently come to light that some hipster footy fans, likely to be found in the Members Stand at the MCG, and probably Melbourne supporters, are bringing upmarket fare to the footy.

See the Coodabeens' "Prosciuto, Prosecco, Smash that Avocado"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6H5a...

It is common to denigrate snobby Melbourne supporters for not knowing players' names. "Oh, well done No. 4!"

I've not yet had the pleasure of a picnic in adulthood Suzy!
I have eaten Pasties wrapped in a napkin before, and of course sandwiches are traditionally eaten using one's hands..in fact eating a sandwich (& perhaps toasties too, although I have eaten these with cutlery!) with a knife and fork, I suspect, would get a few odd looks at a cafe!

Oh...fruit too..I do eat fruit with my hands... I've never felt the need for a fork when eating a Banana! A spoon & a knife..sometimes, if slicing them into a bowl of cereal..but never a fork! :)

Are they still giving those tokens ...

Duke, the ones you are talking about are for local charities. Normally there are 3 deposit boxes, (usually close to the exit), where you can drop the tokens. I think underneath each box there is a brief description of what each charity stands for, and then it's up to you as to which charity to support. Each token has a monetary value, not sure what it is, and the amount each box receives, goes to that charity. :-)

Lez - The token I was on about is the one you get from Tesco and then put in a shopping trolley, when you don't have £1 on you.

Edit - Must admit, I had to look up Embonpoint too

I think you might be far better in just handing them back in to the Customer Services Desk, Duke, so that they can be reused? The thing is that the Charities that get the donations regularly change over - and so if you are seen to be putting several handfuls in one shopping trip into one particular Charity Box then it might possibly be seen as you deliberately keeping and stockpiling them to unfairly boost that Charity's final percentage share of the funds.

It sounds daft but folk have actually got themselves into trouble with quite vigilant Supermarket Staff for seemingly doing this at our nearest Waitrose. If you keep them instead of immediately using them it takes the limited available amount of Tokens out of circulation for everyone else to use to donate and the Supermarkets don't like that.

I'd just explain you didn't understand the Scheme and hand them over for recirculation. At least you know now as to how to use them in future ;o>

message 1091: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments I could just divide them equally between whatever charity boxes there are at my store! They should've explained what the heck they were for at the time..so nay bother to me! :)

message 1094: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well, in our case, they declared the whole month's worth of already donated Tokens to be void rather than let it carry on and also carefully checked out the Customer's possible connection to the Charity that he was donating all of his saved-up Tokens into. I think they thought he might be an over-enthusiastic Committee Member trying to deliberately misuse the Scheme?!
