Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments Shouldn’t this thread be under the 2nd Round?

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

This is confusing me. I can’t find the Rage thread for March.

message 202: by Femmy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Femmy | 195 comments I think the thread for current group read is placed in the "Group Read Discussions" folder, and then moved to "2nd Round of Kings Books" folder after the month is over.

So "The Shining" thread hasn't been moved, and the "Rage" thread hasn't been created yet.

message 203: by Nancy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments Oh, ok it get it. I didn’t notice that for Carrie and ‘Salem’s Lot. I thought I remembered them starting in the 2nd round folder.

I’m surprised a thread for Rage hasn’t been created yet though. Several, people have started reading it.

message 204: by Damian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Damian | 36 comments Yeah, I hadn’t heard if we were counting Rage or not due to it’s short length. I just decided to grab the Bachman Books from the library (surprised that Rage was available at a public library) and read Rage and Night Shift regardless. Starting it today!

mrbooks | 1469 comments Yes we are reading and counting Rage, I know it is a bit of a sensitive issue right now, but we can't help how the books happen to fall.

I think the "Group Read Discussions" folder was created because in March we read two books, so the other book had to go somewhere.

Ben (cptshinypnts) | 44 comments I just finished this one for the first time (was a bit behind in reading, so missed out on it in-group), but loved it! I've enjoyed the movie for years, but the book truly is a different beast! I think one of the things I love the most is that the hotel is really a full on character in the novel; moreso than it was in the movie, even. You care for Jack more than you do in the movie, I think, because King does such a great job at developing him as a caring parent, despite his flaws. And, (view spoiler)

Not mv favorite of his novels, but I can't argue against those who claim it as such. And, it's definitely a great story.

Book and Movie completely different. The director for The Shining Stanley Kubrick supposedly changed up because of some kind of conspiracy about one of the Apollo launch and how he directed the moon landing in a studio. Google Stanley Kubrick and The Shining and some NASA symbolism he added in the movie. S King didn't like that changes but his story was bought by studio so they do whatever they want and Stanley is a genius director. Google Stanley's films he's done. Brilliant movies.

Oh, I'm familiar with Kubrick, and I was expecting differences. I love Kubrick's stuff, for the most part, but I didn't know much about the differences, and didn't look into it much because I wanted the reading to be a different experience, which it was. I definitely enjoyed it, but I can see where he took it in different directions (obv).

Also a bit late - I finished it a few weeks ago, but late for the group read. I agree with you about Jack. I like him, for all his faults he really loved his family, and I think that's why the hotel was able to get such a hold on him.

Totally agree! The movie was a horror story, the book was a family tragedy.

Marlise (mawz76) | 119 comments My order for the first 3...

1. The Shining
2. Carrie
3. Salem's Lot

I know this is late. Lol

One thing I wanted to mention is I liked Wendy's character much better in the movie than I did in the book. Anyone else?

Kandice | 4387 comments Marlise wrote: "One thing I wanted to mention is I liked Wendy's character much better in the movie than I did in the book. Anyone else? ..."

Do you mean Shelley Duvall's Wendy? No, I couldn't stand her! I didn't like the remake very much, but I preferred Rebecca DeMornay's Wendy to Duvall's.

mrbooks | 1469 comments I haven't seen the remake. Shelly Duvall Wendy was far to whiny for me. I don't remember Wendy in the book being so weak I guess is a better word for it.

Kandice | 4387 comments mrbooks wrote: "I haven't seen the remake. Shelly Duvall Wendy was far to whiny for me. I don't remember Wendy in the book being so weak I guess is a better word for it."

Not to mention that book Wendy was beautiful. Jack felt he had "traded up" and there is no way Nicholson could have felt that way about whiny Duvall.

message 216: by Jenny (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments I saw the remake and that didn’t do it for me... the original had a definitive scary factor that the remake could not achieve... the book though was the scariest of the three....

Kandice | 4387 comments I prefer Kubrick's to the remade mini-series as well, but I just don't like Duvall as Wendy. Just goes to show how good Kubrick's movie is, that it can endure her and still come out on top.

As a side note, I think Duvall was terrifically talented and in other roles, totally nailed it, she just wasn't Wendy. So many of her producing products were fantastic as well.

message 218: by Marlise (last edited May 10, 2018 09:45AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Marlise (mawz76) | 119 comments I guess I'm the only one who liked Duvall here. Haha. I can't really place my finger on why I liked her character less in the book. And although she was definitely whiny in the movie, it somehow worked for me.

My list is opposite of yours. I would put:

1. The Shining
2. Salem's Lot
3. Carrie

There's just something about The Shining that draws you in.

mrbooks | 1469 comments Yes you are right it does pull you in, and I think it is Danny that does it. I have to go with Carrie it is the first King book I read and it is what got me started on this long enjoyable journey into a slightly twisted imagination LOL.

Murray Moore | 109 comments I may have to read the shining after I finish up the dark tower series. Only problem is I want to read Salem's Lot also don't know which to tackle first.

Matt | 193 comments Murray wrote: "I may have to read the shining after I finish up the dark tower series. Only problem is I want to read Salem's Lot also don't know which to tackle first."

You'll probably want to read 'Salem's Lot first. There's a huge connection with The Dark Tower. The Shining is outstanding though, from a literary standpoint probably better than 'Salem's Lot.

message 223: by Murray (new) - rated it 5 stars

Murray Moore | 109 comments Thanks Matt I'll probably read Salem's Lot after I get done with The Dark Tower. The Father Callahan character seems like he is interesting.

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments I agree Matt; the shining was one book that was very easy to connect with since the writing was excellent.

message 225: by Nick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Both equally great books. Maybe read them in order. Though they aren't dependant on each other. Don't see much of the shining in the dark tower series so you can really pick whichever you want, vampires or a possessed hotel.

message 226: by Vheissu (last edited Jul 31, 2018 07:52AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vheissu | 35 comments Does anybody think that Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco was "inspiration" for The Shining? King recommends the book and the jacket calls it "an acknowledged" influence. There are bunches of similarities. Has the group read it? It would be interesting to catalogue the similarities.

There is plenty of the shining in the Dark Tower series, did not Jake and Alain have the touch sometimes called the shine and Sheemie was particularly strong in the touch, even Roland had just a bit of it.

Vheissu | 35 comments IMHO, The Shining is a masterpiece, as is The Stand and 11/22/63. The early volumes of the Dark Tower series were excellent, but I think King faced his own mortality and rushed the conclusion of the series in desperation. If he knew how much longer he had to live, I think he would have done a better job concluding the Dark Tower.

message 230: by Jenny (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments King wanted to make Jack Torrance a real character instead of just the Overlook’s boogeyman. And as King says; monsters are real and ghosts are real too. They live inside us and sometimes they win.

message 231: by Ausaf (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ausaf | 2 comments I rank this as Stephen King's best book there is. Although, I need to read more of his other than the short stories and few novels I have read.

It's way up there on my list. Usually comes in at # 3.

message 233: by Brax (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brax Henley (cheds) I thought it was amazing, but the Stand definitely beats all for me.

message 234: by Andre (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andre Z (andre94) The Shining is what turned me on to King in high school, as I'm sure it was for many, so it holds a special place for me that is hard to fairly compare with his other stories. The Stand is also a favourite of mine. :)

message 236: by Steve (new) - rated it 4 stars

Steve Parcell | 176 comments The Shining is great but personally I thought Dr Sleep was better. Nothing beats IT and The Stand in particular for me so The Shining would be in my top ten SK books but probably no higher than 5th.

message 237: by Conor (new) - rated it 5 stars

Conor McGreevy (daft_goose) | 6 comments Absolutely loved this book. It is one of my favorite books of all time, never mind favorite King books! There's something about the setting, the isolation that appeals to me. Perhaps I have a bit of Jack Torrence in me? Not the bad bits though, dear God not them!

Kandice | 4387 comments I love claustrophobic reads and this is a perfect example. Cujo is as well. Misery... King seems to have a knack for them.

message 239: by Elle (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elle (elevatedbliss) | 24 comments I just finished reading The Shining as the 3rd book in my epic challenge to reread all of SK’s books in chronological order.
It’s been more than 30 years since I originally read this book and it’s just as good as I remembered. I also recently watched the movie adaptation again and the book is definitely way better.

Staci Johnson | 102 comments I’ve been away from Goodreads for much too long. Please update me on SK reading order and where we are now. I’m in the middle of rereading The Shining before delving into Doctor Sleep which I must complete before movie. Maybe I’ll get lucky and you’ll all be reading the same. I also saw The Witching Hour and Thinner as a thread but not sure which thread topic it belong to. I’ve read Thinner, which was awesome, and I started The Witching Hour and enjoyed it till life happened and had to put it away for a spell. But I’m back and can’t wait to join in, somewhere lol.
