Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I've had a bit more of a look at the mini, and my upcoming books & fitting them together.

I think I can cover the following:
A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James - #61 - convoluted plot
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - #38 - title starts with H. though I am hoping less obvious ones will pop up when I read it.
Our Dark Duet (Monsters of Verity, #2) by Victoria Schwab - #44 - musical instrument on cover

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cool!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for something less obvious as well, but at least we have one option for Her Body already.

message 1053: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments Can I check for the mini challenge - is it one book per task or can one book be used for multiple tasks?

message 1054: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments It's one book per task.

For the bonus tasks, it will be one book for two tasks. But those are points we can only get if all the other tasks are done, so I wouldn't focus on those until we're sure we can manage the others.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Great!

One more and you're done with the ones you wanted to finish before the 12th :-) Incidentally, that last one will then also complete hand one.

It's funny - so many books have been read this month already but they're scattered all over the place and not one hand is completed yet.

And believe me, I've noticed, and been keeping my discomfort quiet!

I see the logic of the placements, but it's still making my skin crawl! ;-P

hmmmm.... sure, I'll buy that.... except for there being a WEEK of build-up hype!

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Busteeeeeeed ;-)))

message 1082: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Nah but really, I would have told you today when the posts went up but work was crazy and I was fighting a massive headache most of the day.

Aaaand now Cat has beat me to it :-)

Tower Teams is promising to be an interesting challenge this time around! With a Harry Potter theme and a few extra tid-bits built in. Also, for those of you who might have been playing TT for a while already, they're bringing back Buddy Reads for this round.

message 1083: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments I’ve never done any other challenges. I’d love to do another after this one. I’m really going to miss Uno!!

message 1084: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ah for fun and big challenges (beware, sometimes you need a lot of endurance), the group Nothing But Reading Challenges is definitely a go-to place. Tower Teams is going to be run by that group.

Karen, our Uno mod, is also a mod in NBRC.

There's a load more reading challenge groups out there of course, but NBRC is a good place to start.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Sure thing, Cat!

I spent my weekend at a con, working behind the bar, and now I cannot feel my legs or feet anymore. I am knackered. Haven't read a single page of course, but will head to bed early now and try and read a few pages before I fall asleep with my face on those pages ;-)

Enjoying the book so far!

Might also change my 6 Green book to something else, but will decide on that once I'm done with Bear & Nightingale.

message 1088: by Cat (last edited Apr 15, 2018 02:46PM) (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Gentleman's Guide:
#3 - party - they go to party at Versaille
#7 - road trip - the premise of the book is the Grand Tour - trip around Europe. Whilst they don't follow the planned itinerary, they do still travel about Europe
#17 - siblings Henry & Felicity

Not My Father's Son
#17 - siblings Alan & Tom
#5 - tells lie - Alan discusses a lot the lies he told to protect himself (major one that sticks out: lying about being bullied)
#19 - hairdresser - there's a scene where Alan's hair is forcibly cut, and a lot of discussion about his hair throughout, inc being made up for various parts

(also - loves job, but that's been taken...)

#59? - MC is parent - whilst the author (it's a memoir) isn't a parent, it IS about his father & their relationship - his father is the dominant force in the book

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Wow, that doesn't sound at ALL like my Sunday, E!

Do you get tomorrow off, or do you have to stagger into work, somehow?! Hoping you can be seated, whichever!

message 1090: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I had to come into work of course but I am seated, and hopefully will remain that way for most of the day ;-) Legs are feeling better already though.

message 1091: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments oh! Her Body & Other Parties: one of the stories has a photographer character. Actually, it has three - two are incidental, the third is a main character

message 1092: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments That's a good task to get out of the way as those kinds of characters don't tend to pop up all that often.

message 1093: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments We're going to have to figure something out for tasks #41 and #42.

I'm browsing through covers at the moment but for the one book on my TBR that would be such an obvious one to use, I have a different edition. Figures. ;-)

message 1094: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments #41 & #42 - I thought about the kindle (hush! it's perfectly acceptable!) editions of classics.

eg: Emma by Jane Austen & The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot

Ah true, those work, too. Boring covers, but it works for this. Wow, so easy, I didn't even think of those!

message 1097: by Cat (last edited Apr 16, 2018 07:19AM) (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments that last one is HILARIOUS!

And the other lists - it's not even only self-publishers that are using tired stock images, there are a load of mainstream publishers guilty of it too. So odd...

I was mostly thinking about all those god@mned green covers we need, and remembered that some of the kindle eds were green....

btw: I've not been filling any of my books into the mini, though I have been updating the main hands.

I'm 2/3 through Her Body now, and enjoying it! Seven Killings is still languishing unread as yet, though I will pick it up again.

Yeaaah... About filling books into the mini, I've been considering just letting that be for a bit until we have more options and know which of the harder tasks can be filled. To avoid too much switching around. Then again, that won't tell us what still needs to be read for.
