What Else Are You Reading in 2018?
Whenever I get back to the "internet house" all of my Netflix time seems to be taken up with watching missed episodes of the Good Place and Star Trek Discovery. I think you can only download to tablets and phones and I don't have enough room to put enough on to watch while I'm away. I'm really hoping that the new internet we're getting is good enough for Netflix. It's better in the cities and in places where they completely replaced the existing infrastructure but out here they're piggy backing on old copper wire and it's not going to be as good as they say it will. One party was rolling out the best stuff when they were in office (hence the great speeds at my old place) and the next ones have decided that they will cost cut and now we're getting a service that is shit compared to most of the rest of the world (as evidenced by the predicted internet here). I was spoiled at the last town. It has super fast internet.
I love Last of the Summer Wine. It seems to be where all the old comedy stars go to die lol Every big Pommy comedy name seems to be in it. We used to have it on the telly on Friday afternoons. As a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s our national broadcaster (like the BBC but Australian so it's the ABC) used to show all of the programmes from the BBC. They still do show a lot of Pommy stuff actually but now they get it from ITV and Sky and wherever else as well.
Wish we had the Two Ronnies on Netflix. Wish we had a lot of things on Netflix. Australian Netflix sucks compared to the ones in the US, UK and Canada. You used to be able to get a VPN and trick them into thinking you were overseas but they've caught onto most of those. They are trying really hard to stop Aussies from pirating stuff but if they don't give us access to the stuff we want legitimately then people are still going to do it.

Two Ronnies is on Netflix? Wow! Anybody remember "Dave Allen at Large"? That's a show I really miss. Remember the jousting bishops? The lady who didn't know a cow from a horse? Remember the stories about losing his finger?
Jacqueline wrote: "I'm really hoping that the new internet we're getting is good enough for Netflix."I'm glad to hear there's a new internet. I'm almost done reading the old one.

It doesn't appear to be working :-P
It seems most have gotten the hint! There's a lively conversation going on over on that thread. I am hoping I don't have to start deleting posts. I hate deleting posts. So, to remind people what this thread is for...
I have finished my January books!
The Golem and the Jinni was stunning. The depth of research and care that went into its formation is astounding. Such a pretty read.
Jews versus Aliens was a mixed bag, as short story collections are, in my experience. I thought it was a great thought experiment, and I really enjoyed several. I'll have to check to see if any of those authors have written longer works.
Just started The City & the City.

So, to continue...
I’ve had a very good January so far and finished the “Demon Cycle” with The Core, explored the classics with 1984 and finally made it to The Library at Mount Char, which was a bizarre, but somehow still logical book. Now I’m reading the fourth book in the Craft Sequence: Last First Snow

This weekend I finished Miracle and Other Christmas Stories by Connie WillisAnd Christmas at The Mysterious Bookshop edited by Otto Penzler.
Each are books of short stories. Some of the Willis felt too long, and some of the second book with different authors were not long enough, and could have used some sf/fal elements, imo.
Now I'm reading Lulu in Hollywood by Louise Brooks.
Let's see, I have recently finished:1776 which was generally good and definitely picked up towards the end after a fair number of events that were real downers. Even though I grew up in a town that had major battles on April 19, 1776, I don't have much of a clue about Revolutionary War events that happened outside of Massachusetts (e.g. Battle of Brooklyn) or much context for other significant events (e.g. Washington crossing the Delaware). This book filled a lot of gaps for me.
Ghost Talkers, very enjoyable! Historical fiction, ghosts, murder and spies. What's not to like? Well written and the story really zips along.
A Long Fatal Love Chase. This would have been a good beach read, sort of like the 1860s version of a trashy novel, with melodrama to spare. Though I confess, I would often plan on stopping at the end of a chapter and the cliffhanger would pull me right into the next chapter. Probably not a genre I would seek out again, but interesting to read compared to Louisa May Alcott's other work, and in the context of her life and career.
Recently started reading: Borne and The White Spider.

What an amazing coincidence. According to my spam email folder I also just won the Google lottery. Gonna pull down some big money just as soon as I send my SSN and bank account info to this random email address...

Too Like the Lightning finally came in from OverDrive. I've started reading it, but I won't be reading Seven Surrenders right away (OverDrive doesn't have it and neither does the public library). My other current read is Njal's Saga. In the next month or so I'll probably be focusing on reading books I own, so for SFF that will include The Years of Rice and Salt and Quicksilver.

Oo! I hope you like it. Shame about Seven Surrenders though...it really should be part of the same book with TLTL. No one will judge you if you like TLTL and have to buy SS. Also no one will judge you if you hate TLTL. But the little fan group in here will wave our flags vigorously in the meantime ^^

I'll request it, but I'm not sure when it will come in - my guess is that the local library will respond to a request faster than OverDrive, based on past experience.
I'm slowly making my way through The Lost Plot. It's a really enjoyable addition to the series but it's my before bedtime read so I've been taking forever to finish it.I just started a couple days ago We Are Legion (We Are Bob), which so far is amazing. I'm listening to the audiobook and it's one that I want to keep on listening to when I get out of the car.
I recently finished Unearthed. It's a fairly cool space archaeology romp, but it gets bogged down by the YA insta-love. Also had a cliffhanger ending, which is never my favorite.
Right now I'm currently reading Dawn because it counts for both the read all the books challenge and the owned books challenge. I also picked up Fluent Forever: How to Learn Any Language Fast and Never Forget It on my kindle so I've been reading it on the bus.

I think the first book is the best of the trilogy, but all were enjoyable.
I've been looking for We Are Legion (We Are Bob) everywhere short of ordering it from the internet. I really want to read/listen to it. I was going to suck it up and order it the other day but apparently someone is already using my email for an Amazon account and I have to get that sorted first.
I think it may be a digital only release. He's a pretty new author. Bummer about the Amazon thing. Hopefully it's easy to sort out.
Finished Waypoint Kangaroo which is about as rompy as the title would suggest. A spy with the superpower of being able to access a pocket universe to hold anything he wants or needs. Too bad he forgot to put the stuff in it he’d need to foil the hijacker of the cruise spaceship he’s on....Half my library holds came along at once. #GoodProblems
The Core came through the library early, so I’ll be reading that along with The God Wave next. Good thing I have upstairs and downstairs “reading rooms”.
I also got a couple Black Panther collections, as well as I Kill Giants, plus The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Yeah I can't understand the Amazon thing. A couple of years ago I tried to open a new Facebook account using one of my other email accounts and got told it was already being used. They sent me the link and it was some guy from the Middle East. I told them it wasn't me and they deactivated his account. I just checked Book Depository and they reckon they have a paperback as well as a cd. If I don't get Amazon sorted I'll have to order it from there.
Or convince my library to buy it. The librarian from one of the other libraries in our area (5 shires which are sort of like counties I suppose share books between all of the libraries that are at least 100-200km apart) loves fantasy, scifi and dystopian stuff and most of the stuff I have to get in from other libraries seems to come from her. Or a really really small library that services 200 people tops in a tiny village. She gets really good stuff too. Here they're more interested in Westerns, romances and there's a huge section for crime and mysteries and stuff. There's more crime/mystery/thriller books in that one section than the rest of the fiction section put together. Obviously our librarian loves a good murder mystery.
The funny thing is that it's so popular but I can't even find it as an audiobook on torrenting sites. Usually people rush to share stuff but apparently they're not sharing Bob.
My Amazon account got hacked a couple months ago but the woman at customer service was very helpful and got it straightened out very quickly. Hopefully yours goes as smoothly.
Allison wrote: "Meredith wrote: "Let's see, I have recently finished:... Ghost Talkers looked interesting to me. I'm beginning to think I might need to read it. "
The author does a good job of showing not just how mediums interacting with ghosts would work for the war effort, but how mediums/ghosts would work in the world at that time.
Trike wrote: "My Amazon account got hacked a couple months ago but the woman at customer service was very helpful and got it straightened out very quickly...."Check out this recent article from the NY Times on this sort of thing, very interesting: The Follower Factory
I finally got around to returning to the Wheel of Time series starting with The Gathering Storm. I have heard the last three put together by Brandon Sanderson are much better than the middle of the series.
Ron wrote: "I finally got around to returning to the Wheel of Time series starting with The Gathering Storm. I have heard the last three put together by Brandon Sanderson are much..."Personally I really liked Jordan's last book Knife of Dreams, but I really loved Sanderson's 3 books.
I started a current, dystopian Sci-Fi called Gnomon by Nick Harkaway last night. It is excellent on many levels.

I hear he's legion, so he probably shuts that down pretty fast.

Hey, anyone wanna buddy read a Le Guin? I'd be up for The Left Hand of Darkness, The Dispossessed, or The Farthest Shore. Basically anything other than Wizard or Tombs, which I've just read (but if you all agree to read one of those, that's fine too!)
I was planning on reading Left Hand of Darkness sometime this year anyway , but probably not just yet. And I've been meaning to reread the Earthsea cycle, but I'd want to start with Wizard...
Francisca wrote: " And I've been meaning to reread the Earthsea cycle, but I'd want to start with Wizard..."Me too, I want to read complete Earthsea.
I mean, we can do more than one BR, but I should probably only commit to one at a time :) Don't let me stop you though. Find thee some buddies and read!
So far it sounds like we have 2 right now for Dispossessed. I'd need a week or so to clear out some backlog, but I could start midmonth?

Dystopian fantasy from an unusual source. My review of Year One by Nora Roberts

Finished The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.. Really enjoyed the different take on time travel. Continuing on my “must catch up on series” reading list with The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches. If you haven’t given the Flavia de Luce books a try, I highly recommend them.
After finishing and not caring much for Lulu in Hollywood by Louise Brooks. I am reading another book from the sf/f shelves: The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick. I'm enjoying it, as much as one can, a creepy dystopian classic.
Currently reading A Confusion of Princes, interesting little sci-fi story for kids/teens. It started off as kinda-sorta-military-sci-fi, but now it's gone into a bit more pseudo-dystopian. It's interesting the way we get little tidbits of the universe as our "Prince's" experiences take him to different places. Also reading, The Cambion Cycle: Quincy Harker Year Two as my gym read. Probably one of the better Constantine knock-offs I've read of late.
