I had to stop and think there for a moment. I think she was so good that she didn't stand out in any way and just became part of the listening experience.
Don wrote: "ask Phrynne do you mean tongue-in-cheek in cheek comedy paranormal like Christopher Moore? Or situational Paranormal comedy."Tending to the tongue in cheek Don. I haven't read any Christopher Moore so I just checked him out.
Another new author to try:) Thank you!
Phrynne wrote: "I had to stop and think there for a moment. I think she was so good that she didn't stand out in any way and just became part of the listening experience. "Good to know. Thanks!
The Witches of Eileanan by Kate ForsythIt was named Best First Novel by Locus in the year it was first published. It held up pretty well and I'll likely get the rest of the series
Swords in the Mist by Fritz Lieber = excellent
Book of the Dead andDust by Patricia Cornwell = OK
Phrynne wrote: "Tending to the tongue in cheek Don. I haven't read any Christopher Moore so I just checked him out."Try Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It was pretty funny, even knowing how it's going to end ;)

Putting it on my list now. Thanks Michele:)
Finally started “Turning Point” by Lisanne Norman. 100% got it based on covers of later books in series so here goes nothing. Also reading Le Morte Darthur because I love Arthurian legends.

That is always a good sign.
I read two chapters of Before Mars and I already love it so much I just want to run around in circles squealing. It's hard to calm down enough to keep reading. I've made myself a cup of tea and I'm going to turn off or silence all devices with the potential to beep and distract me. There's an annoying clinking sound coming from the dishwasher, but maybe I can imagine it's Martian rocks hitting the plasglass.
Finished reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman yesterday. Really enjoyed it. Another excellent debut novel. Lots of them about lately. Had to get over my dislike of anyone with the name Eleanor....I had a friend called Eleanor once. She actually ran away with my first husband. Did me a huge favour in the long run but I still have a problem with the name. Started reading another debut book last night. The Dry by Jane Harper. It’s supposed to be pretty good too. Not bad so far.

And it has the major plus of being irreverent without being insulting.
I just finished The Way Of Kings - Book 1 of the Stormlight archive by Brandon Sanderson. Boy was it long! PS - hi it’s my first post ever!
Hi Chris 👋I bought that last week along with the first Mistborn book for $5 each at a second hand Bookshop. Bargain I say. Just got to get around to reading them. There’s a massive pile of books in my TBR pile before I get to them.

Finished Wylding Hall. It was pretty cool, but could've been creepier. Giving it a 3 - maybe 3.5.Starting The Fall of the House of Cabal. Not very far in, but I'm already amused by the little author asides along the lines of, "I've been told by my editors that I need to summarize things for people who are just coming to the series - but, honestly, what kind of monster comes into a series on book 5?"
I'm paraphrasing, though. His is much funnier.
Colleen, that does sound good :)
Sabrina, you're stronger than I. Glad I read The Sparrow. Also glad that I am not compelled to find out what happens next! But I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.
I really liked Lord of Light. Definitely not what I was expecting from a colonization story, but as I'm much iffier about sci fi than myth, I was pleasantly surprised! What a cool concept.
Reading Shadow Man and it's got me half hooked, half peeved. We'll see how it goes.
Really want to get back to The Eye of the World, but I super over-committed and am now paying for it.
Already behind May. How does this happen?? I bet you're gonna try to tell me it's my fault somehow...

I finished Written in Red on audio last night. I know this series has a lot of ardent fans, but for me it wasn't trying hard enough and it barely kept my attention for one book. (review)
Anna wrote: "I read two chapters of Before Mars and I already love it so much I just want to run around in circles squealing. I also need someone irl to read these damn books so I can talk at them about everything!
Read Eclipse by Margaret Tabor - nothing about an eclipse, but more an alternative universe tale - and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2378838777.
Right now I'm reading:
Old Man's War by John Scalzi - my favorite Scalzi book so far (of course that's not saying much...)
Cugel's Saga by Jack Vance - #3 in the Dying Earth series
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis - very lighthearted SF time travel homage to the Victorian Age classic Three Men in a Boat
Non-genre books:
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
March Violets by the recently deceased Philip Kerr
The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall
Dear Randy, It's your favorite Scalzi because it's the best Scalzi. Old Man's War is the very reason people think of Scalzi as Scalzi.
Says Beth you might have to read "Written in Red" again! It's is rated higher than "To kill a mockingbird" by goodreads therefore it must be good... right?lol
Chris Demarco wrote: "PS - hi it’s my first post ever! "Congrats! If you're like the rest of us, it will be the first of billions lol
Finished: (Eon, Dragoneye Reborn) https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...?
(Mistborn- The Final Empire

Started:
Ink and Bone
Wizard's First Rule
The Alchemists of Loom
I am also a newish reader, so any suggestions for fantasy books is apprecieted; either in pm or on here ;)
Try Brian Staveley’s CHRONICLES OF THE UNHEWN THRONE and Michael Sullivan’s RIYRIA trilogy as high-quality fantasy.
just picked up "Mr Floods last Resort" by Jess Kidd. her first published book was good enough that my expectations are high.

I also liked Goldenhand much better than Clariel. Clariel was just awful and felt out of place in the series.

Yeah, agreed...I was still pissed at Goldenhand though. It had so much promise!

Really unsure if "have to" is the correct verb...Goldenhand was fun at least. We might all be better off if we pretend Clariel was a fever dream brought on by shards of the Orannis.

Don wrote: "just picked up "Mr Floods last Resort" by Jess Kidd. her first published book was good enough that my expectations are high."Took me ages to find this book until I eventually discovered it has two titles. The one I have listed is The Hoarder. I think Mr. Flood's Last Resort is much more interesting:)
Why do publishers do this?
Yeah it’s a pain. I was looking for Beartown in the shops here in Australia and it is actually The Scandal here. I told the bookshop ladies of the two name thing and said that most people would probably be looking for Beartown because that’s what we see it as on Goodreads so they put a note on the shelf with “also called Beartown”. Most of the last few books of the Obernewton series by Isobelle Carmody is broken up into two books in America. I was seeing different titles and my bookseller and I worked out that a single book over here was being split into two separate ones for American release with names that were nothing like the original Australian release. The Australian book did have two parts when we finally got it when it was released and they were called whatever the American books were.
And I bet quite a few people end up buying two copies of the same book. It really should be possible to choose a title that is usable in every country. Having said that why was Beartown not acceptable in Australia??? And how weak is The Scandal as a title!
Yeah I don’t know why it’s not the same. There are lots that are different. Usually America changes our Movie and book names. Apparently Dymocks (one of our big chain bookshops) has it as Beartown too. It’s The Scandal in the UK too.
Jacqueline wrote: "Most of the last few books of the Obernewton series by Isobelle Carmody is broken up into two books in America. ."I had problems like that when trying to catalogue the Wheel of Time series in the library.
In Hebrew most of the books are divided into two and given different names. Some of the time the original name with an explanation is given on the front page (as with most translations) but sometimes they wouldn't signifiy that it was only part of one of the English-language books.
To get it sorted out I had to use the Israeli publisher's website, the original publisher's website, a fan website and paper&pencil!!
Jacqueline wrote: "That sucks Ester :("The sorting out was time-consuming but enjoyable in a pedantic sort of way.
What really sucked was that the books missing from the series were often one half of a two book set and we didn't have much of a budget to make it complete. :0(
Jacqueline wrote: "Yeah I don’t know why it’s not the same. There are lots that are different. Usually America changes our Movie and book names. Apparently Dymocks (one of our big chain bookshops) has it as Beartown ..."and I've seen both Germany and the UK change book names of American books:
Merry Christmas, Alex Cross in the US became Dark - Alex Cross 18: Thriller in Germany
and
Gun Games became Blood Games in the UK
Yeah the UK can handle blood and sex but not guns 😜One of the movies that really annnoyed Australians was when they changed the original 1970s Mad Max movie to The Road Warrior in the US.
Allison wrote: "Really unsure if "have to" is the correct verb...Goldenhand was fun at least. We might all be better off if we pretend Clariel was a fever dream brought on by shards of the Orannis"Yeah...
I'd recommend skipping Clariel, tbh, but I would say to read Goldenhand. It ties up some loose ends that I feel the original trilogy left, but it is a bit lighter fare that the OT.
Jacqueline wrote: "Yeah the UK can handle blood and sex but not guns 😜One of the movies that really annnoyed Australians was when they changed the original 1970s Mad Max movie to The Road Warrior in the US."
That’s because Mad Max was a hit everywhere except the US, so calling it Mad Max 2 wouldn’t do it any favors. Besides, The Road Warrior is a cooler name. :p
In China, Star Wars has no cultural currency so the movies don’t do well there (Last Jedi bombed hard, partially because people were like, “Episode EIGHT? I’m not watching seven other movies first”), which is why Solo: A Star Wars Story is titled Ranger Solo.
Similarly, The Madness of King George III was changed to The Madness of King George for the US release, because Americans aren’t used to numbered kings, so we’d most likely think it was a sequel.
It goes the other way, too. The Avengers was titled Avengers Assemble in the UK so as not to confuse it with the classic TV series featuring Steed and Peel.
Changing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was likewise a better choice, since saying the phrase “philosopher’s stone” would only get you blank looks here. That’s a very British term.
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle is a reference no British person is going to get, so for the U.K. release it was titled Harold & Kumar Get the Munchies. Much like changing “philosopher’s stone”, the altered title loses an entire layer of meaning.
While we're touching movies, the last Pirates of the Caribbean had "Dead men tell no tales" subtitle in the USA. In most other countries, it was instead "Salazar's revenge" in the specific language, which was (I believe) working subtitle as well.Whatever floats their boats, I just call it POTC #5...
Slightly more on topic: I think that complicated subtitles are useless.
