Borrowed books from friends (swapped), the school library, Book circulation Club during holidays, Police library that Dad would start every time he was transferred (which was A LOT!) :) Didn't own many books (just a few cartons full!)-but had Dad's extensive collection to dip into. There was a category of kids' Hindi fiction, called 'Pocket Books'-read them in truck loads! Rs 0.50-Rs 1.00/- per book! Read the entire original Mahabharat, (a dozen volumes or so), when 11, Ramcharit Manas, Ramayan and dozen other similar volumes. Read anything and everything-including Hindi books meant for adults (not to be confused with 'adult' books), which I did sitting in the loft where I had categorized, numbered and labelled the Home books. That's where I came across the world's finest writers eg, Jayashanker Prasad, Acharya Chatursen, Premchand, Dharmveer Bharti etc-adults read these books and so did I, having exhausted the kiddie literature! By 14 or so, I had also read almost everything worth reading in Hindi adult fiction. Richer for them... Then I moved on to English books!
English was the standard stuff, Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, Tom sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn, Tintin and Astrix (Ok, not books-but what the heck, favourites)! First book in English that I read was Uncle Tom's Cabin-still have it in Dad's library! Rest of the kiddie library was looted by kid bro and nieces/ nephews! At the same time read books meant for adults-the entire spectrum. Need to think hard to remember if there was a writer then, that one didn't read.
A few books are there, but in sad state- rest borrowed, never to be returned-that should be the fate of a book, I have come to realize-so my library is open to anyone to borrow and pass on!
I loved Nancy Drew as a little girl, but when I was about nine I discovered "Gone With the Wind" and never could get back into "kids'" books after that.
Just gonna list 'em. the Junie B Jones series, by Barbra Park. (I don't think I read them all, but I definitely had my favorites. "Junie B has a Peep in her Pocket" was always my all-time favorite, and it still is.)
Bridge to Terabithia (I cried at the ending. Then cried again when I watched the film.)
the entire Ramona Quimby series. (I don't know how she does it, but Beverly Cleary makes those books relevant to every single kid, no matter the time period in which they're reading them.)
the Goosebumps series by RL Stine. (This series defined my third grade year. I remember it like it was yesterday...and that was about 11 years ago, now! My first foray into mild horror books. My favorites were "The Cuckoo Clock of Doom", "One Day at Horror Land", and "Why I'm Afraid of Bees". I can still remember exactly what the covers looked like!)
the Magic Treehouse books, by Mary Pope Osbourne. (I still use some of the book titles as examples of alliteration, when I need them!)
Matilda, by Roald Dahl. (Actually, I loved all of Roald Dahl's books. Especially the BFG. :)
When I got a little older...
Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt. (I read this in fifth grade, and then proceeded to watch the film over, and over, and over. I loved that movie.)
I also liked the "Hidden" series, by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
All of Andrew Clements work, in the fifth grade. Good times!
The "Fudge" books, and then "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret."
When I hit about fifth or sixth grade, I read "BOY"...Roald Dahl's auotbiography. I read that one over and over.
I still have "Sheila the Great" "AYTGIMM", by Judy Blume, the first three Ramona books, and the entire illustrated, Roald Dahl collection, in one volume. :) Also, "Goosebumps: Monster Blood," and "Goosebumps: Welcome to Dead House." "Junie B Jones Has a Peep in her Pocket" might still be around somewhere...
