Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments THE CHAIN REACTION
Duration: January 1, 2018 - December 31, 2018

Let's create a Chain of Books. For this challenge you will decide the number of books you would like to link together. Start by picking a book, any book, and note the things you find interesting. Once you finish that book, select a new book that links with something you found in the book you just finished. Keep doing this until you have a Chain Reaction!

Example:

Start with Norse Mythology.
This is a fantasy book that revolves around mythological creatures such as Norse gods, dwarfs, and giants. The dwarfs were really interesting!
So the next book will be The Hobbit.
This book is a classic fantasy book that has a hero, dwarfs, and a dragon. Time for another classic!
So the next book could be 1984. Find things that are interesting and go from there!
And so on and so forth.
The length of the chain is totally up to you!

Have fun!

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments How to Participate
1. Post here telling the challenge leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.

Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the challenge leader knows to go look at your original post. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

The Chain Reaction

Duration:
January 1, 2018 - December 31, 2018
Goal: Chain together 12 books

Total: 15/12

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling (finished 1/2), the story features an evil being trying to rise to power in the form of Voldemort, so we look at another evil leader in
2. 1924: The Year That Made Hitler by Peter Ross Range (finished 1/5), the story features an evil man and his quest for power, Hitler wants to eliminate a race (the Jews) and in the beginning of the book there is the threat of war when Hitler considers a coup, another group fighting a war with a group trying to eliminate them is
3. Attack on Titan, Vol. 1 by Hajime Isayama (finished 1/7), the Titans want to eliminate a race (humans), there is the threat of war as the village awaits the return of the Titans and takes action to fight them, in this comic with pages that break away from the action to explain a person, place or event, and I found another comic that takes a similar approach is
4. Pathfinder Vol. 1: Dark Waters Rising by Jim Zub (finished 1/8), a comic that breaks away from the action to explain a person, place or event, and incorporates the fun of magical potions, mythical creatures (goblins), and wizards/sorcerers, like
5. Fairest of All by Serena Valentino (finished 1/9), which features wizards/sorcerers and magical potions, but the twist is the presence of a child whose parents got them through nefarious means (sold his soul to the devil) and so the child is raised by a stepparent like this child in
6. The Daughter of Union County by Francine Thomas Howard (finished 1/11), where we again find a child whose parents got them through nefarious means (had an affair and passed the child off as being from the marriage), so this is another child raised by a stepparent, and worse there are racial tensions, discrimination, and violence against people of color/minorities/based on hatred forcing people to hide their true self to protect family just as they had to do in
7. Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli (finished 1/14), where WWII caused discrimination and violence against people of color/minorities/based on hatred also forcing people to hide their true self to protect family, a tale of oppression (imprisoning people, making them work against their will) and societal change (removing freedoms previously alotted to a group of people), all revolving around a rebellious character like in
8. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (finished 1/16), the story of oppression (imprisoning people, making them work against their will) and societal change (removing freedoms previously alotted to a group of people) with the catalyst of a rebellious character, all stemming from the question of morality, gender inequality, and religion, like this nonfiction book that addresses morality in the context of religion
9. Silent No More: Bringing moral clarity to America…while freedom still rings by Rod Parsley (finished 1/19), a book that looks at societal change and morality in the context of religion and touching on topics of education, poverty, and racial divides, led me to return to a fictional series that deals with poverty and education in
10. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (finished 1/20), where the children are getting an education while facing poverty, a story that has an important sword (Sword of Gryffindor), magic, a wizard, and a boy raised by a different family (not his parents) just like the legend in
11. The Legend of King Arthur: The Captivating Story of King Arthur by Stephen Klein (finished 1/21), where a boy raised by a different family (not his parents) is given an important sword/weapon (Excalibur), and is led by magic and a wizard, this man faces death and is a leader and king involved in battles to protect an empire/land/world, in the telling of ancient myths/legends telling a story that has evolved over many years like the myths in
12. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (finished 1/22), where Odin is a leader and king pulled into battles to protect an empire/land/world in the telling of ancient myths/legends telling a story that has evolved over many years, and the characters deal with death and grief just as the family does in
13. When I'm Gone by Emily Bleeker (finished 1/23), where death is a bleak and grim affair when Natalie is called from her family too young and her husband must find a way to cope even on days he would rather not get out of bed, and features a law enforcement officer and a drug storyline
14. Operation Tropical Affair by Kimberli A. Bindschatel (finished 1/24), features law enforcement officers and a drug storyline, with a focus on fighting a specific crime (trafficking of black market animals) like
15. Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer (finished 1/30), which focuses on fighting a specific crime (acquaintance rape) and the efforts and failures of law enforcement as well as the effect on the victims and their families, fighting a system that discriminates against women as Janet did in
16. Speed Girl by Stephan Talty (finished 2/1), where a woman bucks the odds and edges her way into car racing, only to find herself surrounded by hostile men who want to see her fail

Andrea Facciponte (faccipontedesignshelf) | 38 comments THE CHAIN REACTION ☺
Duration: January 1, 2018 - February 22nd, 2018

Completed: 10/10

✨1.Since it was on my "To Read" list since it won a Good Reads Award, I chose to start with When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.

✨2. Paul Kalanithi had struggled with the idea of becoming a surgeon or an author. He mentioned numerous books that stayed with him which is why in the end he became both. One of the aforementioned books was Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, my second book for this challenge.

✨3. In Brave New World, John the Savage is obsessed with reading Shakespeare. For example, he continuously quotes William Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

✨4. In the Tempest, Miranda has been stranded on an island with her father, the Ex-Duke of Milan, who is planning to marry her off to Prince Ferdinand. In Caraval, by Stephanie Garber, Scarlett's father is a Governor who plans to marry her off to a Count.

✨5. One of the main themes in Caraval was sisterhood and the need to love and protect one another. Therefore, my next read will be Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate as one of the main characters struggles to keep her siblings together and safe.

✨6. Before We Were Yours is fiction based on Georgia Tann who was in charge of an orphanage where she did whatever she could to get children adopted. In The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, by Gabrielle Zevin, A.J. adopts Maya.

✨7. A.J Fikry goes to Boston, Massachusetts. The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, partially takes place in Boston.

✨8. The beginning of the Bell Jar takes place in the 1950's in NYC. Summer at Tiffany, by Marjorie Hart, is a memoir about working for Tiffany's in NYC during the 50's.

✨9. Marjorie was in NYC on the historic VJ Day (The day WWII ended because Japan surrendered). Lilac Girls, by Martha Hall Kelly, is historical fiction about WWII.

✨10.in Lilac Girls, Caroline Ferriday was an actress. Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel, revolves around the life of a traveling group of actors and musicians after the apocalypse.

The Chain Reaction
Duration: 1/1/18 - 12/31/18
Completed: 8/8

I chose to start with:
1. Caraval 1/3/18
This book twists your mind and confuses you as to what's real and what's not, who to trust and who not to. It's a big mystery when you don't know anything about it.
2.Reunion in Death 1/29/18
This is a mystery book revolving around the murder of a florist businessman who was generally liked and seemingly had no enemies, but he was killed by a pro hitman who was paid to do so.
3. Magic Bites 2/11/18
The main character is a hired mercenary whose salary comes from taking requests from people that typically involve anything magical.
4. Dead to the World 5/1/18
This book, just like the previous one, is in the paranormal genre, involving vampires, werewolves, and the like.
5. Moon Called 6/2/18
The MC is a shapeshifter who was born in a werewolf pack and is friends with a vampire through her job as a mechanic. She investigates the reason behind a young boy's death and the forceful turning of people into werewolves.
6. The Murder on the Links 6/7/18
A man was found dead lying face down in an open grave. The MC was sent to investigate this murder. It is a book in the Hercule Poirot series.
7. The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding 6/13/18
This is another book in the Hercule Poirot series, just like the previous one. Poirot uses his wits to solve the mystery.
8. Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil 9/9/18
The MC, a world-renowned hacker, is trapped in a virtual system and was forced by the "god of the system" to live countless lives as the villain, but was able to break free from the control of the system. He is very cunning and intelligent and uses these to ultimately escape the system and return to his world.
9.

ReadingByTheSea | 20 comments I love this one :) This is one of my favourite ways to choose my next book, so I am in for 10 :) Will add as I go.

4/10

1. Finished reading The River Between, which was about two Kenyan tribes separated by a river. The river is important to the story, and the novella ends with some rather beautiful river imagery. So, I chose to read Death of a River Guide by Richard Flanagan, which is about a man lying drowning in a river beneath a waterfall.

2. Finished reading Death of a River Guide, which was by an Australian author and told the stories of multiple generations tied to a dying man. So, I chose to read People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks, another Australian author. This tells the story of multiple generations tied to a 500-year-old illuminated manuscript.

3. People of the Book told the story of a 500-year-old Jewish manuscript that, among other things, was saved from destruction during WWII. I will next read another book about WWII: This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tadeusz Borowski, which is about the author's time in Auschwitz and Dachau.

4. Wow, This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen was a brutal read. I REALLY need something lighter for the next one!! So something lighter that also has the themes of loss of family and a brutal social order - bring on the cosy mystery Olmec Obituary.

Chain Reaction 2018

Let's create a Chain of Books. For this challenge you will decide the number of books you would like to link together. Start by picking a book, any book, and note the things you find interesting. Once you finish that book, select a new book that links with something you found in the book you just finished. Keep doing this until you have a Chain Reaction!

1. The Book of Chameleons
set in Angola, written by the same author, post civil war
2. A General Theory of Oblivion
hermit character, civil war in Angola, post-civil war, imprisonment and torture of characters believed to be against the communist government
3. The Morning They Came for Us: Dispatches from Syria

message 36: by Lois (last edited Feb 18, 2018 06:00AM) (new)

Lois | 112 comments For my "Dig Deeper" Challenge I am read about the history of Canadian cooking. The first book I chose was Feasting and Fasting : Canada's Heritage Celebrations / Dorothy Duncan. There are so many topics and ideas in this book I had to pick it. She talks of the First Nations, the Acadians, Welsh, Scotch, Maple sugaring, the Chinese, the Irish, Queen Victoria, plus all the periods of Canadian history. I just might have too much to choose. I still don't know how many books I will read. I think I will just keep it as TBD. In one of the Chapters [Christ;s Mass] a section tells of past Acadian Christmases in Prince Edward Island, so my next book will be the Historical Atlas of Prince Edward Island : The Way We Saw Ourselves by James W. MacNutt.

My Chain will start with
1 Feasting and Fasting Canada's Heritage Celebrations by Dorothy Duncan Feasting and Fasting: Canada's Heritage Celebrations / Dorothy Duncan

Goal: Chain 12 Books
Linked: 12/12
Completed: Nov 25, 2018

1. ZERO is a dystopian story of Humans surviving and rebuilding after depleting and poisoning Earth; in this case with the use of technology, which is the basic premise of The Gender Game except they believe surviving and rebuilding Earth is based on following a Matriarchy vs a Patriarchy at least for one half of the river.
2. The Gender Game The Green a dense forest separating Matrus and Patrus holds nothing but dangers but for Violet it just may hold salvation The Unremembered Girl is about a feral girl living in the woods who becomes obsessed with the family who live within, could they be her salvation or is she there downfall?.
3.The Unremembered Girl is a story about a girl with a tragic past that finally finds love but is it enough for her to overcome the wrong done. In Magnolia Nights a girl with a past that haunts her, struggles to remember why and following the path to unlock her memories she just might find love.
4. In Magnolia Nights Ellie inherits her Grandmothers house and following her mother's journals she finds there she unlocks her tragic past while in Tribute by Nora Roberts Cilla moves into her Grandmother's house and soon begins to discover a sinister secret. With the help of her grandmothers letters she will unlock a long buried secret.
5. In Tribute Cilla dreams of the past she never lived as she walks side by side with a grandmother she never met but some people in town fear the past is going to repeat; Daniel in My Name Is Memory has the ability to remember every past life he ever lived and knows some things are always going to repeat.
6. My Name Is Memory is about the star crossed love story of Daniel and Lucy, Daniel remembers every life they have crossed each other while Lucy is falling for the first time, will they ever break the cycle, this is the same premises down to the characters names as Fallen by Lauren Kate, Daniel has loved Luce for eternity but she can never remember the past they shared while he is desperate to break the cycle they have been destined to repeat.
7. Fallen When Luce attends Sword & Cross Reform School she is thrust into a world she didn't believe in. The shadows flying around her all her life have more meaning than she could have ever known and she starts to believe that maybe angels really do exist. Similarly in Once Dead, Twice Shy after an accident on prom night Madison learns the truth behind death, that angels exist and she has one to guard her but most importantly that her "life" will never be the same now that she sees the shadows that are all around.
8. After Madison dies in Once Dead, Twice Shy her life is changed forever. Despite her desperation to just go back to her normal life she learns that her death was fated and that her destiny lies in crossing souls. Madison's death may have left her with abilities she doesn't understand and more questions than answers just like Mattie's death in The Ghost Files. Ever since Mattie died when she was 5 years old she has had the ability to see ghosts. When she finally embraces her abilities she is left with more questions when she learns that her death prematurely gave her abilities associated with those who help souls cross over.
9. In The Ghost Files Mattie just wants to be normal, to be able to ignore the ghosts she sees but when the ghost of her foster sister Sally shows up she can't ignore it anymore and normal goes out the window. She begins a desperate search for her murderer. Just like Hannah in Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff. Hannah wants her life to go back to normal after the death of her best friend Lillian but when Lillian's ghost shows up in her bedroom normal goes and the window. Lillian forces Hannah to find a murderer.
10. In Paper Valentine Hannah and the ghost of her best friend hunt for a killer. Their small town is victim to a serial killer as body after body of young girls turns up but the killer just may be closer than Hannah could ever imagine. Ghosts may not haunt Britt in Black Ice but a killer just might. Britt and her friends plan a ski vacation in the mountains that a serial killer has made is hunting ground. Trapped by a blizzard, Britt finds that the killer may be a closer than she feared.
11. In Black Ice Britt finds herself stranded during a snowstorm forced to survive in the treacherous wilderness with the last person she should rely on. Overlooking her hate and distrust they must work together if they are going to get out of the forest alive. In Starry Eyes Zorie's perfectly planned summer falls apart when she and her former best friend are lost in the wilderness during a camping trip they are forced to overlook their increasing hatred for one another to survive.
12. In Starry Eyes a camping trip goes awry when Zorie finds herself alone with her self proclaimed, enemy but as the days pass she soon realizes that the Lennon is not the person she thought he was and the past year is nothing like it seamed. In Biting Winds Jessie's honeymoon is off to a bad start when her groom pulls up to a tent trying to fly away claiming that the camping disaster is their destination. Within hours of saying I Do Jessie learns that Dave is not the man she thought he was and that the last two years were just a lie.
