Katie (--katie--) | 69 comments Hope the interview goes/went ok Becca :)

I read in the newspaper that Waterstones is putting an end to it's 3 for 2 offers as it wants to be taken more seriously.

Helen | 3465 comments Thank heavens I've switched to e-books!

message 358: by Susan (new)

Susan Well, it doesn't make me take them more seriously, I would have thought that with the growing popularity of e books, they would be trying to attract more customers....not alienate them!

message 359: by Becca (last edited Sep 01, 2011 09:21AM) (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) | 30 comments Thanks everyone :) It went well thanks Bob :) There was alot of interest in the position so I was the 12th person he'd interviewed that day so alot of people so just have to wait now to hear by the 11th of september. The interviewer said though that I did really well and it was a good interview so just a waiting game now :)

Katie I wouldn't really buy a book in Waterstones anymore. I love the store but I never shop there because I know that I can go on amazon and buy a brand new book for under a fiver. Price is everything to me being a student so I get my books new or used for a cheap price. I really think Waterstones needs to re-think its prices. With the popularity of e-books, which you can get for a good price these days, Waterstones selling the books, paperback or hardback, for the full price will sadly soon get unpopular. I think paperbacks and hardbacks need to be sold for a reasonable price these days to help them stay popular over the e-books.

good interview experience as well

message 361: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments I do find Waterstones good for browsing, wandering and finding authors I wouldn't normally read. But I rarely buy anything there now - and Goodreads is just as good if not better for browsing :)

message 362: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 226 comments i browse in waterstones too....but buy from either amazon or iBooks....

message 363: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Not heard of iBooks. Wonder if they'll sell me the book I want.

message 364: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 226 comments it's the books version of iTunes so if you have an iPod/Phone/Pad you can buy using your iTunes card..

message 365: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments No. I don't get why the book isn't for sale on amazon uk when it is on .com, and the last 2 books were on uk. So annoying.

message 366: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 226 comments Helen which book/s are you looking for?

message 367: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I want Countdown (Newsflesh Trilogy Novella) by Mira Grant . It's a prequel to feed and Deadline by Mira Grant. Amazon.com have it for $3, the UK don't have it at all!

Sounds good about the interview :)

I'm a student too, so I know what you mean. I don't shop in Waterstones that often, and it is usually the 3 for 2 that tempts me. They have once or twice beaten Amazon's price but I just like browsing round an actual bookshop, and for me there's only the choice of smiths or waterstones for new bookshops.

message 369: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments When I moved to manchester I used to browse a different book shop every lunch time. They've all disappeared.

Have a fabdabbydosy day! I can't wait to have a second trip there too.

message 373: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_b) Adrienne wrote: "i found out today that HMV have sold waterstones..."

Yeah, I think they sold it a month or so ago to a Russian businessman, and it is the new owners that have decided to end the 3 for 2 offer. According to the BBC news site, they are now going to bring in £3, £5 and £7 price points instead, which could well mean beating Amazon on price occasionally!

message 375: by Susan (new)

Susan I was in Waterstones yesterday, with a list of five books, all recommendations from GR members, and they didn't have any in stock.
Others which I wanted to read weren't included in the 3 for 2 offer, so I don't suppose I will miss it all that much.
Maybe having more competitive prices will be better.....as long as it's not the authors that have to absorb the lower cost.

message 376: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I was only thinking earlier that Amazon kindle books are never out of stock!

message 377: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments I know it's not practical or cheap but I do seem to have a strong, totally biased feeling towards Waterstones... heck, I even like the 3-for-2 offer on occasion (ie: last month's buying of 9 books in one go :S)
I really hope Waterstone's is saved though - there's just something about wandering around a bookshop that appeals to me... plus I have a Sony e-Reader not a Kindle so amazon is kinda harsh on me for eBooks :(

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Hayley, know what you mean! My local Waterstone's in Yeovil runs a Sci Fi book Club and we are planning a trip to London to have a tour round the Picadilly branch and then onto the Forbidden Planet book shop too. I have two Sony's and Amazon won't let me buy ebooks from them either!

I.. I... I think I want to sneak in with your group somehow - that'd rock, you lucky thing :D
I can understand why one company won't cater to their rivals, and I don't have anything against it tbh as Waterstone's does seem to have a good ebook selection imo (or it could just be that they manage to have the books I want ;D)

As long as Waterstones still remains the same for looks, cust service (because there's always been someone willing to help or give an opinion!)and the occasional one with a coffee shop I think I may survive.

I really wish I lived near Yeovil now so I could come to that group. I made my family stop by the Forbidden Planet shop when I visited London, their book selection downstairs looked quite big (unfortunately getting my mum and brother to stay there for long wasn't as easy so I didn't get to browse much). They have good prices sometimes too, I got the Star Wars 1 audiobook for £5 in the sale recently.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Katie, we are a great bunch and we all have a great laugh together. Really looking forward to our trip. Will be a long day and our wallets and feet will probably take a good hammering!

And no doubt your bulging bookshelves as well when you get home Lynne. How many unread books you got sitting in your library room now??

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Ian wrote: "How many unread books you got sitting in your library room now??"

Lynne has a library room :O Oh Lynne, I'm jealous! When I eventually buy my own place that's something I'd adore!! I have 1 unsturdy bookshelf from that classic designer R. Gos that'll likely collapse under too much weight :(

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Ian wrote: "And no doubt your bulging bookshelves as well when you get home Lynne. How many unread books you got sitting in your library room now??"

Too many! About 1050 now and with luck won't get any bigger! (Mmmm famous last words!) I am trying not to buy anymore but have swapped a lot and been using the library more lately for books for the book club and series.

Yes, I have my own library, it was the family dining room but as the family have gone now I traded the dining table and chairs for an 8 ft bookcase, sofa and libray table instead. It's great to sit in there now and read!

Oh Lynne, I'm so jealous! Altough I'm now considering moving any books I've read to piles in my spare room and just continuously refilling the bookcase.

I must admit, when you said home library I kinda imagined this (heaven for me!)...

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Yup, sounds good right ;D I'm tempted to buy a ticket for the euro, it's a good amount :)

Once I've made my billions (due to recession have had to up my expectations) I'll have a whole room dedicated to books (and maybe a secret passageway leading to it that only I know about). For now I just make do with ensuring my Sims 3 peeps have all the luxuries I want ;)

PS the mugs you see are not left over mugs while reading, they are all mugs representing different books!

Ah, I always have leftover mugs next to books I'm reading, I just can't help it - but pretty good that you've even got mugs to go with the book theme ;)

I am ever so jealous of you still - my bookcase is unstable and too wussy for my needs (needs to really be attached to the wall but can't in rented flat :S)

It looks so cosy too! Can I come over just to curl up in an armchair for a bit... I feel book deprived :(

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Hayley you have an open invite to visit anytime! Key under the door mat.

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Woohoo!! I promise to make copious amounts of tea to keep up the energy during reading sessions!

Have you seen the library at Trinity College in Dublin? I've only seen pics but I think I've found my home... now if only they'll allow me to camp there ;)

message 393: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments On a separate note - just received an e-mail from Waterstones announcing the Man Bookder Prize shortlist - for anyone interested/who doesn't yet know:

Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman and Snowdrops by A.D. Miller

Although there is a deal going on with WS at the mo' (money off both paperbooks and eBooks) I've just noticed that the eBooks are up to £4.79 dearer :O Still unsure how that works :S

Yay other another person who's life ambition is to have a study/library room! Haha when I have a house of my own (and it will be massive, because I will be filthy rich!!) I am going to have a library with all the walls covered in book shelves and a nice cosy setee in the middle to curl up on with a book! Even if I end up in a little flat (please no!) one room, no matter how small will house my books! I have over 200 now and I'm only 19 so hopefully I'll hit 500 by the time I'm 30! (but with the way I buy my books it may be 25 or younger!)
and also I love the Sims 3 and cheat like crazy so my sims can live in the houses that I wish to live in with all the stuff I wish I had...a girl can dream eh?!

message 396: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Ah Becca, glad I'm not completely alone in this (my friend thought I was crazy for wanting that... she just didn't understand I tell's ya!

I had well over 100 books when I still lived with my parents but had to limit myself when I moved from HUGE house in Scotland to one room in S. England and so am trying to build it back on slightly limited funds - but one day I shall have my mansion with library!

Sims 3 is brilliant for creating my dream houses, I could almost be a designer - as long as the clients went with what I wanted and had unlimited funds ;)

Some are penguin book mugs and some are Ladybird books and a few Harry Potter and Little Miss mugs and a few are independant book title mugs. I got most from Waterstones and book shops and ebay!

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Helen - sorry been a bit manic the last few days, hassles of a new job :(

The trip to hay was successful, and involved a lot of wandering through book shops and much eating and some drinking may have been involved.

Came away with only 3 books (some more Alex Riders to get through) as I'm trying to keep my TBR pile down a bit.
