I'd love to go but getting B&B is really hard. I went a couple of years ago in November and had a great time!

I've yet to visit Sumatra, must have been quite an experience? There is still a Holiday Inn on Orchard Road, but it's bound to be the latest reincarnation of the building and certainly not the original. Here they seem to tear a building down every 15 years, still not sure why.... (The thump-thump-thump of pile-driving is currently the soundtrack of my life).

Just enjoyed a weekend in Oxford- it's difficult to beat Blackwells as a book shop. I can spend hours in there - easily!!

You should have popped up to Shaftesbury to see Gold Hill, we could have met up and had coffee!

Jane (bookworm40) | 29 comments Hi Lynne, hope to get back down this way later in the year.
Off to a local book sale tomorrow no doubt will come back with one or two books..

We will have to arrange a meet up then, would be great!

Helen | 3465 comments Lynne, how was your holiday? Are you back?

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Helen wrote: "Lynne, how was your holiday? Are you back?"

No only been here two days got rest of week and visiting Nick and Karen on Friday. On Internet in the Caravan Park club. Having a pint! I just won the quiz!

message 171: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Did you win anything nice? I love quizes, my team only won once though and that was when a chap from the team who win every week happened to be in pub on his own and joined us! I'd like to be better all rounder but let's face it... I'm the books, films and music person.

message 172: by Robert (new)

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 26 comments I love quizzes too, but my general knowledge is shamefully patchy. Anything to do with film, for example, is usually beyond me!

I'm in a pub quiz team - funnily enough our weak point (other than anything to do with soaps) is literature - cos its mostly questions about classics/shakespeare which are my areas of profound ignorance

Did you win anything nice, and I'm looking forward to seeing you on Friday :)

Lynne, I hope Nick has told you too bring a bag with you, we have a book swap at the Coffee Shop and you can take some books if you want - you might find one you have not read!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments They announced another team as winners! Some were grumbling as I had my daughter on my team (she was my only team member!) and she is complex manager so they announced the next ones down! I did get a Park Resorts mug and a rossette in secret from the enterainment manager - Sarah's other half!

message 179: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I'd have been most upset at not getting a proper prize!

I love a pub quiz (and I get a little carried away - Helen, I'm competative too....). Last month I went along to a trivia night and our team won (especially good as there were 13 teams taking part!) My weak points are sport & geography, though funnily enough, last time I found the film round hardest (since I teach at a film school this was particularly embarrassing!)

message 181: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Hope you had a better prize than Lynne.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Helen wrote: "Hope you had a better prize than Lynne."

No I just got the mug and rossette and they got a t shirt as well. I did get a J2O glass later in the week from my daughter but she wouldn't let me have the pepsi class for my collection!

The pub I go to gives out quite good 1st prizes - usually freebies from the brewery like sponsored t-shirts, but good quality

message 184: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I just increased my books read in a year from 50 to 70 and I'm still in credit. Does anyone else have a target?

message 185: by Susan (new)

Susan Helen....I've set myself a target of 77.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Helen wrote: "I just increased my books read in a year from 50 to 70 and I'm still in credit. Does anyone else have a target?"

Mine is set at 150, I am in credit and I read 206 books last year eventually, which included re-reads, this years total doesn't include the ones I have listened to again.

message 187: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
I'm staying at 50 - I'm well ahead but it gives me some leeway to read some tomes some time this year

message 188: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments 75 this year! I think I managed about 60 or so last year so this is a bit of a stretch but so far, I'm ahead of target, maybe I'll manage it.

message 189: by [deleted user] (new)

I set myself a target of 75 so far I'm ahead off target.

message 190: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 464 comments I'm aiming for 200 this year, managed 169 last year so thought I'd push myself and I'm 7 ahead at the moment too :-D

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Just added number 78 and now 18 ahead.

message 192: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I figured as I was on 30+ a target of 50 was daft. I'm about 5 ahead. Am planning a big trilogy in the summer hols so that'll slow me down.

message 193: by Susan (new)

Susan Which trilogy are you planning to read?

message 194: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments There in lies my problem! I have a number that have concluded and so are ready to read. Tad Williams - Otherworld; Robin Hobb - Fools (should I read the previous 6 again is my dilemma with this); David Eddings - Elder Gods (4 books), Raymond Feist - cant remember what its called but its 2 x 3; Katherine Kerr has her final 5 parts done too.

So any advice?

message 195: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
I vote for Tad Williams, for no other reason that I had a mate at Uni called Lawrence "Tad" Poel - great nickname

message 196: by Susan (last edited May 27, 2011 07:40AM) (new)

Susan I honestly don't know any of these....names in a hat, perhaps!!
I had always thought a trilogy was three books!

message 197: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments trilogies are but then the writer discovers his manuscript won't fit in one volume etc

message 198: by Susan (new)

Susan Oh I see....I'm going to look these up, I'm intrigued. Have you read the early parts of all of them, or are some new to you?

message 199: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Tad, Feist and Eddings are a new series, Kerr builds on previous 8 books which I read long ago as does Hobb. Although Hobbs I think is just in the same world and not directly based on the other books.

message 200: by Susan (last edited May 27, 2011 08:06AM) (new)

Susan I think Katherine Kerr with her background in archeology interests me most, not sure why!
I'll be interested to know which you choose.
It looks like June's genre might be fantasy, so perhaps I'll have a look in Waterstones!
