Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Lynne - Forbidden Planet London is the best, they've got an entire floor down stairs of books. Lots of American stuff which you donl;t see anywhere else.

Last time I was in London I staid in Covent Garden right next door to the store and spent a good 3/4 hours in there.

Books, comics, and sci-fi my three major vices all in one store :)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) | 30 comments I've been to both Forbidden Planet in London and the massive Waterstones that looks like it should be a museum, the building is so fancy! The Forbidden Planet, like Dave said has a downstairs floor of books. Found some great fantasy book there, not that I bought sadly as it was a few years ago when I had no money (boo!) but great for ideas.
And Hayley, I'm lucky enough that I live in uni 9 months of the year so I take most of my books there (I can't leave them alone back home!!) but some that I know that I won't read for a while sits back home on my bookshelf so I guess I have enough room for the next two years, seeing as I have two! So I can just keep buying and buying and buying...haha

I wish I knew, it was used as an idea for what could be done in a friend's home.

Becca - what massive Waterstones, where, I need to find it... does it have a coffee shop ;) I feel ever so slightly jealous of you, the only books of mine that are still around my parent's place are the ones they or my little sister want to read :(

I am off to the Picadilly Branch - it's the biggest in Europe - not sure about the coffee shop - our great leader didn't say if there was one or not.

Oooh, methinks a trip to Picadilly is in order :D It may just take a day to do that ;)

Deanne | 651 comments My favourite library is the main Vancouver library, the literature section upstairs is divided into countries. There's a coffee shop, places to eat and you can take out 50 things at a time, added to that the building is beautiful and I lived a block away.

message 407: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Any chance you can send it over here please to replace my local library ;D

Have just ordered 4 of the 6 MBP shortlist books online, hopefully they'll be delivered by next week. Ones I've ordered are The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt Snowdrops by A.D. Miller Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

Those 4 looked very interesting of the 6.

message 408: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Hayley
I live in Nottingham now but would live in Vancouver for the library alone, let alone the view from my old apartment.

message 409: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments I'd love to move over there :) Once passed through but never fully had a chnace to look round :( (Perhaps my parents realised I might've managed to sniff out the library and disappear forever!)
Now I def need to go and create a big library - sorry, house - on Sims 3 :P

message 410: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Love building houses on Sims 3 and I noticed there's now a gothic library set at the store.

I read Jamrach's Menagerie a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.

Not read any of the other books on the shortlist yet. I like trying to read all the books on the shortlist for book prizes, but often find myself disappointed by some of them. Having said that, I definitely want to read The Sisters Brothers and Snowdrop, and also Half-Blood Blues. Will be interested to know what you think of your picks Hayley!

message 412: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Oh good, glad to hear you liked it :) I think, out of the 6 those 4 were the ones that appealed to me the most - the other 2 sounded good but could be read last :)
I've also set myself the task of writing a review of each of them on my blog once read, which could slow me down a very small amount between readings - oh the joys :P

@Deanne, thanks for telling me - now I'm going to go on a hunt through the sims store :D

message 415: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments The Kite Runner is a brilliant read, but at times a difficult book to read, made me cry in places.

message 416: by Nick 2E0NAQ (new)

Nick 2E0NAQ (nick196742) | 630 comments thanks deane,

Susan I loved The Kite Runner too, Nick. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

message 418: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Me too! I thought it was an amazing book, very emotional but just beautifully written.

message 419: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments On a random note - is anyone else watching the rugby? It's definitely had a few close calls, I was meant to be doing more book reading but have been distracted!

message 420: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Watched the last night of the proms instead of the rugby, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and I wish I'd been there.
As for the rugby just wish I was back in Auckland.

Just read A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author - also set in Afghanistan and very moving and sad. I saw the Kite Runner film but not read the book.

Wales did deserve a win, England were way too unconvincing - but teh Ireland match was a shocker too - expected them to almost walk it but USA almost had me worried ;D

Aww, it's good that you can laugh about the fact that someone/thing used your e-mails to make you look a bit iffy ;D

Seriously, I had that happen to one of my e-mail accounts once, I went to try and reclaim and for the life of me couldn't answer half the questions that were asked for proof - so lost my e-mail (Thank goodness it was only a back-up :P)

message 431: by Melki (new)

Melki Found a grocery store yesterday that stocks an aisle of British "specialties" - goodies that I'd only read about in books - Maltesers, Heinz beans to be served cold over toast, Spotted Dick in a can AND Yorkie bars - NOT for girls! What will happen if I eat one? A rip in the space-time continuum? The Apocalypse? Will all that chocolatey-goodness cause a hormonal imbalance? Well, do I dare try one?

message 432: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments Yes, have a yorkie... wait - are you a girl or a woman ;)
Maltesers are better though imo ;D

message 433: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Have you reclaimed it Nick? Mine was done last year, they sent wierd text to a colleage. The same day a colleagues was done and rude text was sent to Head who thought as 'play' was in the title thought it was related to new schoolplayground equipment. As soon as she opened it, porn was sent to the school priest, local authority and other heads! I laughed so much!

message 434: by Susan (new)

Susan Melki....your allowed a Yorkie if you know stuff about soccer and other traditionally male things....never heard of Hienz beans being served cold....especially not on toast!

message 435: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Yorkies were nice but they changed the recipe years ago and I don't like them any more. I do like maltesers but didn't the middle used to be honeycomb rather than biscuit?

message 436: by Susan (new)

Susan I hadn't noticed that Maltesers had changed! I've never liked Yorkie....I prefer thin, dark chocolate....wish I had some now!

message 437: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I don't like biscuits so it stood out to me.

My book count has dropped from 3 ahead to 1 ahead in the last few days.

You wouldn't get me eating Heinz Beans hot or cold on toast.....horrid stuff!

message 439: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments I remember as a kid if we were at my grandparents and having beans on toast my grandad would grab a spoon and let us eat the rest out of the can... actually not too bad tasting ;)

I love Yorkies, I remember getting annoyed when they put that on the wrappers when I was 11-ish.

Goodreads has changed slightly. I went to click on Friends and it's shifted.

Melki - Cold beans on toast :(

We've just had an american specialty food store open. Discovering the joys of Coconut M&M's and Fluff on toast :)

message 444: by Melki (new)

Melki I assume when you say Fluff, you mean marshmallow fluff? I don't know anyone who eats it on toast...mostly used on white bread, peanut butter on the other slice of bread - known as a "fluffer-nutter" sandwich. I like fluff, and Nutella on graham crackers.

Mostly I was surprised to hear that there are American "specialties".

Cold beans on toast - yummy - particularly as a hangover cure alongside cold takeaway curry. Cold mushy peas also a delicacy round my way. Me and my whippet are very partial to them along with a deep fried Mars bar for dessert.

message 449: by Melki (new)

Melki I thought deep-frying candy bars was an American thing, Ian.

Scottish chip shop delicacy over here Melki.....only ever had one and it was a pretty disgusting and messy experience. I'll stick to cold mushy peas
