message 553: by [deleted user] (new)

My CD's are also in aplhabetical order!
But my books are just stacked in a pile - which at the moment I have 15 to read.

Katie (--katie--) | 69 comments My books used to be in alphabetical order, then we moved, my books were in boxes for six months (bad times, plus they were packed badly and some got badly bent) and since then my collection has steadily expanded and now they are arranged for maximum use of space.

One day when I have more bookcases I'd like to have them arranged by author and aphabetically.

@Karen, my CDs are alphabetical too. They may change thickness but thankfully they're all the same size.

Stefanie (stefanie_1973) | 12 comments Sam,

I want to do the Hay-on-Wye festival this year too! Thanks for the website link.

I've been wanting to go for years but keep forgetting.

I also want to go to the Peak District as we live fairly close to Derby (we are in Leicester) and it seems so lovely. I'd love to go around August when the Perseid meteor shower is in full swing. Seems like a good, dark, uninterrupted place to view it.

Next year I#m hoping for India as it will be my 40th birthday and its always been my dream to go there.

I'm in Sandiacre, between Nottingham and Derby. Keep meaning to go to the Peak district, as it's practically on my doorstep.
Often go for walks on Bradgate park in the summer, or Wollaton Hall.
Spent the day getting plastered, even managed to get some on the walls too.

Helen | 3465 comments Anyone noticed that some books are in danger of disaapearing form GR? Something to do with Amazon. As most of mine are from Amazon/Kindle, I'm worried that my bookshelves will be depleted.

message 558: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie (stefanie_1973) | 12 comments Hmmm, I seem to have lost a post. I posted, at least I think I did about Smokey the cat with the loudest purr and I can't for the life of me remember where I put the post.

Anyone know?

Yes I noticed that but thought it was cos of being a librarian now. I did rescue a book yesterday which I had in my collection a rare edition of The Colorado Kid by Stephen King

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Helen it tells you more about it in the Librarians Group.

Re Librarians group - clear as mud what will happen on Jan 30 re Amazon kindle editions - seems like GR bosses don't care or have something up their sleeve.

That's what I thought too. Don't think they know what will happen when they change over.

Helen | 3465 comments Talking about allowing them, presumably will cost them though. I've been saving mine, but it takes ages.

Katie (--katie--) | 69 comments Helen wrote: "Talking about allowing them, presumably will cost them though. I've been saving mine, but it takes ages."

Glad you mentioned this Helen, I'm visiting home this weekend so I can save some of my books, especially the french one that only I appear to be reading on Goodreads.

message 565: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I've been at it for 2 days. Discovered that actually I had a lot more books at risk than initially thought. I originally entered by cover rather than isbn, so have been entering isbns and then saving. Also, entered all my TBR books. You get into entering the data, quite addictive. Shame I can't be paid to do it!

message 566: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
Out of 541 books, I have only 3 books at risk of being deleted, 2 of which are hardback primary school prizes (which I still have and probably created when I first became a librarian - hope I can save them) and just one other - my latest kindle purchase - so I'll sort that out. I have 10 others that may be merged with another edition - all old books that I no longer possess, so the edition picked was a guess anyway.

Why you got so many H??

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments I had over 500 Ian, saved a few but just checked now and the total was down to 114. I am just going to wait and see what happens now. Seems far too much work - I'd rather be reading!

message 568: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I initially entered by title and then picked relevant cover. My actual editions are the risky ones as a lot of fantasy has completely different (and awful in my opinion) covers. There are also trade paperbacks etc. Want to make sure I keep my edition.

message 569: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I've also been adding my paperbacks that haven't been read yet. All kindle editions are supposed to be okay so I haven't checked mine.

message 570: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (theresabaker22) | 20 comments going to sound really silly but how do you check if your at risk losing books?

message 571: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Click on a book, where the picture and title are at the top of your page, there will be a message sating 'this edition is at risk' or something like that.

Amazon info is being taken away by 30th, so GR have found alternative sources for info plus librarians have been updating info and therefore saving books. My list now has 6 on it, there were 100s 2 days ago.

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
I'm now at zero and for Theresa and anyone else concerned, just to clarify , no-one is at risk of losing books or reviews/ratings etc, it's just some editions may disappear and if you chosen that one, all your data will migrate to another edition of the same book. Below is the link for GR librarians which gives you the situation on your books. It may not work if not a librarian, but someone will have to test that and let us know.

message 573: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments There are still books at risk of disappearing completely. However, most are being saved by various means. Mine are all safe now, I've also chased up a few friends too.

message 574: by Niall (new)

Niall | 113 comments turns out I only had to rescue 1 of my books, Discovering Psychology, by The Open University. All sorted now.
Shame Amazon are doing this, as I know that thanks to Goodreads, Amazon have had a lot of business from me that they would not have had before. Sure I'm not the only one that feels this way :(

message 575: by Shel (new)

message 576: by Micha (new)

Micha (micha85) | 3 comments Hi Sheli, I didn't see it but I'm intrigued by "Before I go to Sleep" as it catches my eye every time I look at the kindle section of Amazon so planning on catching it on 4OD tomorrow afternoon if I get a chance.

Helen | 3465 comments It's snowy! Downside, tram got stuck on frozen points. Took me longer to travel the 15 mins than it did to get from Leeds to Manchester!

message 581: by Jane (new)

Jane (bookworm40) | 29 comments Yes it's snowing well here, just outside of Cambridge

message 582: by Helen (new)

message 583: by Susan (new)

Susan It's snowing here in Suffolk too....can't wait to take my dog for his walk in the morning....I'm going to go early before anyone else has walked on the field!

message 584: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments That'll be nice. When we were walking home from the tram station to my house the dog opposite went for us. It attacked a woman two weeks ago, just wondering when the police decide it's gone too far.

message 585: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 224 comments Just got home from 'baby' sitting 3 grand kiddies in Swaffham 6 miles away. No sign of gritters 15mph mostly side ways! along the A47, our new motor has an electronic gear box, damned thing kept overiding the manual, every time I changed it up, to cut the engine revs/torque, to stop it spinning the poxy thing kept changing it down again!
Our 'old' civic with a standard automatic gear box was fantastic in the snow. This new one is a brilliant motor wet or dry, but does it hate the white stuff! I suppose it had to have a down side!, still we're home, warm and safe, there were three off the road on the way home so I suppose it was bad going.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Had some lovely snow at Gloucester but mostly gone this morning all but hotel carpark and not much all the way home either, no sign there was snow here in Gillingham overnight either now.

message 589: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments No snow at all here in Barry - we had a few flakes early Saturday, then just lots of rain :(

message 590: by Jane (new)

Jane (bookworm40) | 29 comments I wish we only had rain ... 4ins of snow here over night and the sky looks like we could be in for more... Not looking forward to the journey to work tomorrow getting off of the estate is the worst part

message 591: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments We had snow overnight but it's melting now, lots of sluch and deep water around.

Robert, the dog wardens and police have been to her bungalow. One cop was bitten. I have an appointment about yesterday in the school holidays.

message 592: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 224 comments Hi Robert, my posting was sent at 11.30pm! at the hieght of the snow. Changing up a gear wasn't to go faster, it was to keep the same speed but at lower revs= more grip! Except this motor hates low revs! and the electronics overide the manual.Grrr!
I spent years on the roads, many Yarmouth to Aberdeen/Dyce, I know how to cope with snow/ice, highest gear you can/lowest revs!
I know what you mean about 'the captain invincibles' passing emergency/rescue vehicles. Then there are 'the I was only doing 15mph officer' types yep! flat out in first gear. It would be funny if it wasn't so damned dangerous! I take my hat off to you working in that lot last night, we had 15cms.
I've spent most of the day clearing the footpaths here for all the [other] oldfolk who can't get out.
Happy to report all alright, one has run out of washing up liquid! I've got to go to the shop tomorrow, I'll sort that out then. Byee!
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

message 593: by Louise (new)

Louise there was a lot of snow about yesterday... I travelled from Wales (north) to London, via midlands, and saw tons of it...long journey helped me finish a book though

message 594: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Ours has mostly melted, I imagine it'll be quite slippery tomorrow. Apparantly, school's boilers are out of oil so it'll be cold too!

message 595: by Ellelou (new)

message 596: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Robert
Was on the M1 myself yesterday and know what you mean, -7, snow flurries and people still trying to get into the back of the car.
Spent too much time at work putting broken people back together again, and what's with cyclists riding around in the dark with no lights, usually wearing black.
