I had some trouble with this one in 2017. A lot of classics work, but many of them I've already read. I may just opt to do a reread of a classic for it this year.

In The Thirteenth Tale, she reads the entire Sherlock Holmes series in one go, so I'm going to just read the next one in that series that I haven't read yet. I'm up to either The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes or The Hound of the Baskervilles.
I think I will read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I just finished All the Light We Cannot See last week, where the main character reads Jules Verne in braille.
Not so happy to see this prompt again! I had it in one of my challenges this year and it was a struggle.
I just read The Dirty Book Club and in the book they read (and mention) Fear of Flying, Fifty Shades of Grey, Henry and June: From "A Journal of Love"--The Unexpurgated Diary of Anaïs Nin and How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale. I think I'll read Fear of Flying!
Not thrilled to see this one again! (Actually, I still haven't knocked it off for this year.) I think I'm going to be in the "reread a classic" camp.
I agree. I had a hard time finding one to read this year, and I didn't like the book I finally picked for it in the end.
I love it!! It was one of my favourites this year lol I'll do the same and limit it to a book mentioned in another book I read for the challenge.
I think this year I am going to read a book that is mentioned in one of the other prompt books I read.
Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express is mentioned in the book The Dinner so that is what I used for this prompt this year.I just read Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand for the "book with one of the four seasons in the title" prompt for this year, and the book The Goldfinch is mentioned. I will probably read that one for this prompt in 2018.
One of the books I read this year was The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology tried to destroy Paulette Cooper (a book about an interesting woman). Seeing as it mentioned several other books about the infamous Church, I figured I'd go with one of those (probably Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief since I own it already...).
I loved this prompt and nextyear I'll try to read a book mentioned in a book published in 2018. It'll be hard.
Both Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them work for this prompt and they're quick reads. I did the audiobook of Fantastic Beasts this year with Eddie Redmayne reading it.
I'll probably do what I did this year: read the first book that is referred to in a book I read for the challenge, provided it's conform to my own challenge constraints: previously unread and by an author I haven't read for the previous challenge.I ended up reading Stevenson's Jekyll & Hyde this year, since it was referred to in Norman Mailer's Why Are We in Vietnam. I must say that it was pretty quick: Mailer was the 4th book I read this year, and Stevenson the 7th.
My possibles so far are The Good Companions (from Matilda) and Little Fuzzy (strongly recommended by John Scalzi in the excellent Fuzzy Nation.
My pick for this category this year was The Great Gatsby, which is mentioned prominently in both Norwegian Wood and The Hotel New Hampshire, both of which I also read for this year's challenge.Incidentally, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami is a book with song lyrics in the title and by an Asian author (for the ethnicity prompt).
I’m going to read Invisible Man by Ellison. I figure it is important enough of a book that someone has mentioned it at some point. ;)
I read The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry recently (for the second time) and he's a bookseller. The author posted a list of all of the works mentioned on her website: https://gabriellezevin.com/ajbooks/
Two books that mention quite a few other books are Magpie Murders (mostly mentions other mystery) and The End of Your Life Book Club (mentions a wider genre of books).
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is mentionned in The Legend of Sleepy HarlowA Tale of Two Cities in A Tale of Two Biddies
Gone with the Wind in Gone with the Twins
Murder on the Orient Express in Mayhem
at the Orient Express
And Then There Were None in And Then There Were Nuns
The book Matilda mentions lots of books

Lady Chatterly's Lover: Novel
1984
Enduring Love
The Mysterious Affair at Styles
The Murder on the Links
Lord Edgeware Dies

Why are we having duplicated prompts? :( I used The Wind in the Willows for this year's prompt, it's mentioned in the All The Wrong Questions series. There's lots of books mentioned in that series, including Murder on the Orient Express, I know that there's a blog somewhere where someone wrote down all the books mentioned in ATWQ.
If you're a SF/F fan, Among Others is a great book itself, but for this prompt is also a treasure trove of other SF/F books as the protagonist is a voracious reader. There's even a whole GR list for books in this book!
The Thursday Next series (The Eyre Affair) references a lot of other books (though especially classics, which may be less helpful. Since I'm probably not going to manage to finish the advanced section of the 2017 reading challenge I'll probably save Three Men in a Boat (referenced in Have Space Suit—Will Travel) for 2018.

Thanks!!! I've been meaning to read the Goldfinch for ages :D
In Scrappy Little Nobody, Anna Kendrick mentions:The Shining
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
and probably a few others I missed.
You could stretch the definition and include books based on movies/plays she talks about working on:
Twilight
A Little Night Music
Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: And a Thousand Cocktails
Behind Closed Doors mentions And Then There Were None, both are really fantastic if you haven't read them!I think I am going to try to read Murder as a Fine Art, which features the real life author of Confessions of an English Opium Eater as a character.
Quick tip for any Kindle readers out there: there is actually a page that lists any books mentioned in the book you are reading. I have a Paperwhite so I don't know if it works for older Kindle versions, but if you click on the little information button next to the book title when you are in page view it will pull up a window that is titled "About the Book." It has all the basic information like the author and other books, but if you scroll to the very bottom sometimes it has a section called "Mentioned in this Book." It then has a list of all other books talked about in that book without you having to go and search for them.
Hopefully it helps out, this is a tough prompt!!
I think that doesn't show up in all Kindle files. I download a lot of Kindle books from the library, and maybe 30% of them list the books mentioned within.
I am going with "Little Women" !!! I have NEVER read this book!!http://www.listchallenges.com/books-m...
Lit Hub posted all the books mentioned in twelve different books, so if you want to get an idea that way:http://lithub.com/the-reading-lists-h...
If you want to take a book that's been mentioned in a book you've read, you might have read one of the books she gives lists for.
I know that Matilda there is a list of books she reads in the library. I don't remember many of them, they might have all been classics, but I used The Old Man and the Sea for the 2017 advanced list prompt.
Amanda wrote: "If you're a SF/F fan, Among Others is a great book itself, but for this prompt is also a treasure trove of other SF/F books as the protagonist is a voracious reader. There's even a w..."Based on that list I'm going to read The Man in the High Castle
I stumbled randomly across my choice last year - I read Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between and she mentioned Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, both of which I also read this year. I’d like to read the book mentioned in a book I read in 2018 again. I may plan to read The Feminine Mystique and A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique & American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s, to fulfil this and the feminism prompt.
Stefanie wrote: "I think I will read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I like reading a book that's been mentioned in a book I've already read...and I'm about halfway done with ATLWCS.
I think I'm going to just see if I can find a book mentioned in something I'm currently reading, or in one I'm reading for the challenge next year. If I don't have any luck I'll be back here! :)
I recently bought myself
for my birthday and I wanted to challenge myself to read it throughout the year. I think I will use it for this prompt.
I think I'm going to read Three Men in a Boat for this one, which is mentioned in To Say Nothing of the Dog--which I will do for either time travel or or another task.Last year I read Confessions of an English Opium Eater, which was mentioned in Murder as a Fine Art (which Allie mentioned above).
I found this list: http://lithub.com/the-reading-lists-h... which has 12 featured books about reading and each book has a list below itemising ALL the books referred to in the main one. There are loads to choose from - I have selected #4 Among Others by Jo Walton which mentions a wide range of Science Fiction and Fantasy novels, and of these I am torn between Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg and The Dispossed by Ursula Le Guin. I will likely go for the Le Guin as I am trying to read only books by women and/or people of colour for this years challenge.

Tam Lin by Pamela Dean mentions a ton of classics. I haven't read it in years, but I remember The Wind in the Willows and about a dozen Shakespeare plays.
I am currently reading Blind Spot by Dani Pettrey it mentions Die Trying by Lee Child.I may read it.
Since The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend has *so many* books listed, I decided to, once again, use one from there for this prompt. This year, I will be reading "Before I Fall" by Lauren Olivier.
Amanda wrote: "If you're a SF/F fan, Among Others is a great book itself, but for this prompt is also a treasure trove of other SF/F books as the protagonist is a voracious reader. There's even a w..."Thank you for this!!
Jim C. Hines has a series called the Magic Ex Libris where librarians use books to do magic. So there are tons of books within a book here and it works for the prompt involving a bookstore or library.
An Unnecessary Woman mentions a bunch. You can see the list here: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...My picks (not necessarily from this):
The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Vol. 1: 1931-1934
