Jim | 21809 comments Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Well, walking round an office in walking sandals probably isn't appropriate Jim,..."

"Appropriate dress" falls into the same category as "neighbour and walking friend were dismissive of things I liked that they didn't, and the only important thing is that I enjoy what I'm doing, "
At the moment if you need to wear walking sandals at work because of your foot, wear them. I suspect your managing director would understand :-)
But good on you for going to visit the old lad with terminal cancer. Things like that are important, and frankly, somebody who does that sort of stuff can walk round the office bare foot if they want :-)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments It' not as if you're going to start a new fashion trend, Desley, with everyone wandering around the office in sandals!

Are you?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, did my usual Friday night rubbish sleep, woke up about 6ish and decided to turn over, only to be rudely awoken at 7.15 by Lucy being sick! Went to market town today, one of the stalls I wanted wasn't there, so didn't stay long. Was annoyed in B & M to see Christmas treats on the shelves, am sure it's normally a bit later till they do that, although they did at least have Halloween stuff too. Had to drive past a different Morrisons and decided to pop in, as something was out of stock in the one I went to yesterday and despite it being a smaller store, they had things I've never seen in the other one, I got some alcohol free pink gin, which was finally at a price I was willing to pay, might just go back for another before the offer ends (although ironically I stocked up on the cans of alcohol free gin and lemonade yesterday as it's the cheapest place for them!). As I hadn't really bought much with my pay rise, I decided to give a donation to the charity Lucy is from.

To be honest, it wouldn't have even occurred to me if our HR women hadn't pointed out when we had the client do last month that we have a dress code in our contract, not seen mine for a while, but I do remember when I started denim wasn't allowed, not even my denim jacket and I only needed it to get to and from the office!

message 17004: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Dress code/health - if you have to see clients just say you're sorry you're wearing sandals, but have to for medical reasons (unspecified) for the present.

HR cares more about this than they should; medical trumps dress code - after all, casts aren't pretty but may be required!

message 17005: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Yep. I’m with Alicia on the dress code Desley. Glad you got your pink gin and the missing bits and bobs. :-)

Mum has had a fall and is in hospital for the foreseeable until they’ve decided whether or not she’s broken her ankle. It happened while Bruv was staying so for the moment he’s got this and I don’t have to go down there. I am now very glad that I did some serious self care this week.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, Lucy woke me up at 5am this morning for some reason, then I woke at 6.20 as she was hurting my legs, so got up and fed them all, then got another hour of sleep. Did a couple of chores, then after lunch the sun came out, so decided to sit and read outside rather than doing the washing up, it was only out for a couple of hours, then I did part of the washing up (need something to do tomorrow!), made the bed and then had a shower as I didn't want to get in brand new bedding dirty.

Read the blog earlier MT, glad you got some self care and hope your mum isn't in hospital for too long.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, not quite the day I expected, had asked friend to come and look at one of the local reservoirs, which also used to be a village and is low enough you can see the road and some of the foundations, but she messaged at 12.30 to say that she was hoping to, so I said we'd give it a miss and she offered a short walk early evening - not my ideal time for a walk, but as long as I have notice I can alter things round so I still get everything done, we ended up getting out about 6.50, so just a little walk round the park. Re did my nails today, the molten metal look so much different over black, really should post some pics. Sis in law wants me to do mermaid next week, I ended up going with a set of 6 powders, so think I'll pick 5 and have one hand over black and one over white, as I can't think of any other base colours!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Thanks Desley. I hope it resolves itself. At the moment she’s in the heart ward because that’s the worst thing of the three, the other two are the ankle and the dementia. The ankle is broken. Both bones but cracked without movement. She’s a bit out of it but she’s in pain so she’s very tired. I rang my uncle, her brother, and told him what was going on tonight. It was lovely to be able to talk it over with him.

It feels as if nothing I do will be the right thing. Maybe there is no right answer and I have to accept that. Bruv, as always, though supportive, wants to put her in a home. I’m not sure she’s as dippy as he thinks and I think she’ll know and miss her house. I’m fervently hoping that as the whole thing unfolds the way will become clear.

I just can’t do anything to her that I wouldn’t want done to me. And Bruv doesn’t seem to be remotely bothered by that. But I guess I’m looking at how she feels now and he’s looking at what she would have said if we’d put this situation to her twenty years ago.

Two radically different answers.

Aryama Srivastav Well I am here to find the right audience for such fiction, as I can see there are only lovers of ya fiction no one is interested to read a child fiction, space 🌌🚀, if you would read for love of reading and for praising and appreciating the young author so I recommend you all this

Asleep awake : There is something in Every day and every night 🌃🌉

I personally think we should understand little author's thought 💭 and pls ignore the little spelling mistakes after all it's a 11yr old author tiny one so already there are many reviews about that !!

Well it was a not a self primo kinda thing since I am not the author, also being sticky about two of the spelling mistakes is not a matured thought when you are taking about a young one you should have some idea they need time for studies also the spellings will be reviewed soon as possible but have a look for story too dont only critisize for a minor mistake but also praise for the work and efforts

Jim | 21809 comments Rosemary was right, you don't put stuff like that in this thread. It's counter productive, it just irritates people and they cheer quietly when it's deleted
It's also a total waste of time because people never bother to check out stuff that cannot be bothered to fit in with how the group ticks over

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments M.T. Sorry about your mum; there's no ideal answer having been in a not too dissimilar situation.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, very frustrating day at work with retired colleague not getting something. Hopefully he'll get his head round it, or our meeting on Thu will be interesting! Did go in to find some wax melts on my desk though, there's a bonus! Friend's cousin is making badges and keyrings for our Pink Think month, but she's starting early, I got her a couple of orders which she dropped off after work, they are very nice.

It certainly does help Jim, I wouldn't have stumbled on your books if I hadn't 'met' you on here and not only have I enjoyed the ones I've read, but you are one of the few authors I'll buy as soon as a book is published :) It is a hard situation MT, and having a different opinion than your sibling makes you think one is right and one is wrong, but I'm not sure it's that simple, as long as you are both making your decision out of love.

As Desley said "It is a hard situation MT, and having a different opinion than your sibling makes you think one is right and one is wrong"

My tuppence worth is that I have lost track of ladies who swore that 'Their mother would never go into a home because they'd look after her properly.'

The problem is that they beat themselves up putting off the inevitable.
But it's an awfully difficult decision to make. One question is 'will they actually be happier to move when they're still capable of understanding and learning and perhaps even appreciating?'

Another question is, 'Is moving them later just putting off the decision, not until they don't realise, but until they can no longer vocalise their upset?'

I realise I'm being no damned help at all at this point, and given both my parents and in laws are dead, I've ducked this and cannot really give useful advice

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, that was a tough day at work, and 10 mins after logging off, I realised a problem with the last e-mail I sent, so I sent myself an e-mail to make sure I'd remember to do that in the morning! I did at least get some a compliment for some work I did this morning and did feel proud of myself. Weather was even nice enough to get a washload out as well.

Hope today helped clear stuff up MT. I've never thought about it the way of your second question Jim, it's food for thought, although not something I have to worry about now (and I did know my mum's views on nursing homes)

I think the later you move someone, the harder it might be for them to adjust - and make new friends.

If they can't make new friends, it will be hard for them. I feel for the people who move to our community to the higher levels of care, and don't qualify to live first in Independent Living - they just never get fully integrated into the full community. Many of those who come from the outside seem like lost souls, and so needy - significantly because they can't remember what you've talked about.

The pandemic has made this MUCH worse.

message 17025: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments A lot of people have got a lot older during the pandemic, not just the two years the pandemic lasted. They've aged perhaps ten years in the two

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, that was a long day, one of those days where it was really quiet in the morning, then everything came through in the last half an hour! I ended up leaving the building at 5.10 (supposed to finish at 4.30) and hadn't distributed all the important e-mails! And then had to go to retail park to pick up my clothes from Asda, and popped in a couple of shops while I was there. Nipped in co-op on the way back and there had been a donation of books, including some Dean Koontz ones, I had no money on me, so will pop in tomorrow to see if they are still there. And another bonus is my foot is a lot better today, still swollen, but when I touch it, it isn't painful anymore and best I've been able to bend my toe for weeks - no one commented on my dress and walking sandals, either the director I was talking to this morning after I'd swapped my sandals for socks didn't notice, or was to polite to comment!

Sorry to hear your mum seems to be struggling MT, hope you can find some kind of rehab for her, I think it's a shame we don't have the old cottage style hospitals anymore. Yes, some people have aged a lot with the lack of interaction Jim, and have been affected mentally by it.

message 17027: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Glad to hear both your toe and HR are improving. You deserve that!

I think I've aged a century, into a whole different class of person - EVERYTHING is so hard to do now. I persist, get the basics done, will even get to publishing a new book soon (keep saying that and keep having to postpone the launch due to OTHER reasons - book is ready - so I won't keep trying to put a date on it), but have been visited with a huge number of self-management problems that MUST be attended to first, and it is exhausting on top of exhausting.

Other than that, I'm fine, and I STILL tell people I'm the healthiest sick person I know. Only it's starting to be less and less of a joke.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, ended up having to work an hour late, and we had a large file to download that said 40 mins, so I went to get another bottle of alcohol free gin and a couple of bits, then came back and distributed it, so I'll have looked good sending something after 5pm on a Fri!! At least I have a long weekend, but I had to re-arrange a meeting that should have happened when I'm not there for 8am on Tue, and I've got an 11am meeting too, so not so fun! It's been a nice sunny day, did some errands at lunch, to discover there was no sign as to how to pay for the books, so me and a bloke who was also contemplating what to do decided to treat it as a swap, so when I go next week, I'll take as many books as I took today, plus an extra. And this afternoon I managed to run up my stairs, which was nice - foot was a bit sore after getting back from the shops after work but nothing like it has been, hopefully I can try and wear shoes again next week.

Sorry that things are so hard to do Alicia, hope you get a break in the self management so you can make some headway with the book launch.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Thanks, Desley. Getting all the medical appointments SCHEDULED when the surgeon wants results asap has been tricky; I've done 3 out of 4 now, but the last one could hold up the whole thing. Sigh.

And I'll be rushing to an appointment next Tuesday to a nearby city I've never been to - fortunately Lyft and Uber work around here, if the MedVan from our facility can't take me on such short notice!

I must really want this surgery - I am hopping to make all these appointments.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, as I've got a busy couple of days for friend's birthday, I've decided to have a chill day today, although typically for me that did involve some essential housework. but also did face mask and nails too. Did mermaid powder on my nails this week, looks lovely on the black and rubbish on white, thinking I might need a nude instead of white.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had a nice day with friend, luckily the forecast rain didn't materialise, and we had a lovely sunny day. Went to Oxenhope to pick up the diesel train to Oakworth Station, where Railway Children was filmed, and they had some memorabilia, so had a little wander there, then got the steam train into Haworth and had a mooch round the shops and had some lunch - my self control disappeared again though and I came home with some wax melts, although I did at least get one that was the last of the summer range and one that was the new autumn range, so not ones I could guarantee to ever get again. And best of all, I've hit my step count, which also included walking up/down a steep cobbled road and my foot is fine. Decided I'm going to wear sandals till I see podiatrist on 15th, and will just keep taking socks to work! And even managed to decide on something to do for my birthday, and what time to take off.

message 17032: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments glad you had a good day. I think you're wise with the sandals

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, despite being woken up at 3am by heavy rain and thunder, we had a glorious day. Woke up at 6 and as I thought we were going out at 10, I dozed on and off till 8, then friend text and suggested we go out at 8.45 so we could get a walk before shopping! We saw a heron fly over us, then we went in the little bird viewing hut, not been in it for years, a bloke came in after us to look at the deer that we were unaware of! so we ended up seeing 3 of them, then called in a cafe on the way home I'd not been in before, would definitely go in again. Had a nice mooch round the shops, but not impressed with the new trends, but at least I got 4 tops from charity shops. We were going to have lunch at Nando's, but we didn't have enough time on the parking ticket, plus it was a lovely day and Nando's was heaving and felt quite warm, so we decided to go and eat outside. We needed to pick her son up, so we found a place near there, we've been before, but it wasn't as nice this time, my cheese and onion pie was overcooked. Was nice relaxing outside eating and drinking though. We had to wait for him, and I had Uno in my handbag, so we sat on a bench in the sun playing a few games, she beat me every time! And even felt good enough to walk from hers to Lidl to get fruit and veg for the week, foot feels fine even though I've done 13.8k steps, only needed one painkiller. II did rest when I got home and finished my book. Let's hope it copes as well tomorrow, as I have to be in the office and won't be able to wear socks straight away as I have an 8am meeting, and no boss all week. If foot is fine tomorrow, I'm going to start walking more, not to the extent I've done today, and maybe not even my 6 target, but I feel like a gentle stroll round the park every day might be enough.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Really glad to hear your foot is recovering Desley.

On the Mum front, she's much perkier. The OT is meeting the carers at her house today to see what needs to be done to sort it out and I'm meeting them tomorrow to look at her care plan from now on. Today I am going for my weekly walk and winge with a friend. I haven't been for ages so I'm looking forward to it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had heavy rain again overnight and quite a lot of rain today, am quite looking forward to autumn/winter, especially now my foot is getting better, going to do a tally of how many days in total, not consecutive, I can hit my step target between the two clock changes. Fortunately my 8am meeting didn't last too long, but both that and the 11am meetings gave me more work, yet took up part of my day, so feel behind, which isn't a good start to the week. But, one of our jobs won an award, which I didn't expect, so at least all the effort before easter was worth it.

Glad your mum seems perkier MT, and hope you enjoyed your walk and talk

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Afternoon!

I'm heading up to Buxton, Derbyshire for the weekend and just realised that the last time I saw any of you lovely people was at the soiree in Derby too many years ago. I recall being somewhat tipsy but have very fond memories of some wonderful conversations. Really miss that kind of thing, to be honest!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, definitely feeling autumnal, was a chill in the air this morning and Lucy has brought a moth a day home this week. Was sunny till about 6, then we've had rain, so at least I got out to get money for the window cleaner - I was going to walk round the park, realised my foot was sore, so turned round, and it dawned on me that I hadn't taken any painkillers and pain wasn't at teeth gritting stage, so that's positive. I did come home and read with my foot up. Was a busy day, but feel I'm getting there, which is a good thing as I seem to be in meetings all afternoon tomorrow. And when the window cleaner came for his money, I found Lucy chilling on the rug, it's taken about 5 years for her to look that relaxed on my rug!

Hope you enjoy Buxton Stuart.

So glad your foot is better - this is real progress; pretty soon you can use it normally. Then all the pain will vanish in the mists of time, and be a memory instead of a symptom.

Then the other one, and, being bipeds, that's it!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Well, my waffly post doesn't seem appropriate after hearing on the news that the Queen has died. I might not be all that big a fan of the royal family, but very few of us have known anything other than the Queen on the throne. I can't believe it's happened in the same week we got a new Prime Minister, and friend pointed out it's unlikely we'll see another Queen on the throne, the next 2 in line are King's. RIP Queen, certainly fulfilled her vow to devote her life to serving her people

Still doesn't feel right to be waffling about my day, but friend wanted to go for a walk to see sunset yesterday, and we saw these while we were out, so thought it might put a smile on someone's face at this sad time. I'd have to go back once the water levels are more normal, but I'm sure there isn't normally so much greenery at that part of the lake. We think it was mum and 2 fawns, when the younger looking ones were frolicking, it seemed like they didn't quite know what to do with their legs. I'm looking forward to seeing how some of my walks change over autumn/winter, will try and share more pics.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments The deer were lovely, we must have watched them for about 10 mins, they kept staring at us, but it was only a motorbike that scared them. Learned today that our new era will be known as the Carolean, which sounds very strange. Lots more strange times to come - currency, stamps, passports - even though the show Kavanaugh QC couldn't be made today, they are now known as KC's. At least some of the changes will be permanent, as the next two in line to the throne are male.

I think that somethings that are more 'solid' get changed the next time things are issued. So we'll see Elizabeth II letter boxes for a century or more :-)

Apparently they might or might not issue new coins immediately, it depends what is needed in circulation. Stamps will probably come out immediately with the collectors sets

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, still doesn't feel right waffling about my day, but I had my appointment with the podiatrist at lunch, she said it's healing well, I do have an extra scab as I have a dip in my nail bed, which could have been causing the thickened nail. She did say that as they didn't put the Phenol on after, it will heal quicker, so that's something to remember when I have the other one done, as I've had issues with that ingrowing since I was a teenager, so definitely want as many precautions as possible to avoid that one growing back! She also wasn't concerned that it's still slightly swollen, just said that if it's still like that in 6 weeks, to speak to the doctor. She agreed how hard it is to elevate your foot above your heart! So I'm going to try wearing pumps to work tomorrow, and can use my foot masks again, feel will appreciate the moisturiser! I've been parking back at my usual spot furthest away from the building and using the stairs this week, although I do have to take a painkiller when I get to my desk. I do think that the pain now is just stiffness, as I've gone from doing loads to barely anything, as the swelling has been less since I've been walking more. Did one of the local reservoirs after work last night, it's really low, it has been that low before but not normally by this time of year. Yet I did the canal after work tonight and it looks quite high, I've definitely seen it lower this year, and I've barely seen it for 2 month!

message 17049: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Glad you're healing well - the increased exercise seems a lot, though.

You monitor as you go, so it'll be fine.

Pumps? Brave woman!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had another long day at work, nearly an hour overtime, and I still thought going doing some food shopping was a good idea - a bottle of white chocolate irish cream and a victoria sponge scented candle may have fell in the basket! On the plus side, my feet coped well - I did get stuck in traffic going to Aldi, so I swapped for my walking sandals before doing food shopping just in case, and everything perfectly fine. However after such a long day, I couldn't be bothered with chores or a walk, I just put my PJs on and finished my book!

Well, it has been 2 months now. Oh, I call them pumps, but they are classed as trainers
