Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments You reminded me to send out a congratulatory note to a friend who might be sadly more former than actual - because FB showed me she has a new grandchild. Of such connections is humanity made.

Another person here, who seemed to go out of her way to be mean, always gets a big, 'How nice to see you!' from me, when our paths cross, and she seems less grumpy. I think she may be in pain, from the way she uses her walker (frame?), and that I can completely sympathize with, as I'm rarely pain-free. It can make one less cheerful than otherwise.

Muscle is heavier than fat Desley so you can be the same weight but healthier - all the walking must be paying off.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Got a nice email back from my friend after saying hi and congratulations on new grandkid. Best possible result. Cautiously looking to stay in contact in the future - she has a knee replacement in October, and I'm so glad she won't be in pain after that (and rehab) are over. Pain makes us fractious.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, that was a nice summers day, did a quick walk round the lodge at lunch and then just went to co-op after work as needed milk, still managed just over 7.6k steps.

That reminds me of one of our retired directors, he rarely spoke to anyone, so I always smiled and said hello, and eventually he started reciprocating. Got a bit awkward when he walked through an office of 12 people and I was the only one he'd speak to, especially as I sat at the back of the office!! Yes, pain does affect our mood, which is partly why I put up with neighbours behaviour, as I knew her pain levels were bad and affecting her sleep. Thanks Pam, but looks more like fat than muscle!! But the main thing is my pain levels are much less. Glad that your e-mail worked Alicia, and hope that things do improve.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We've finally had a nice summery day here. Just in time for the Scottish Open and the town is full of golfers. All the Americans are back, we haven't seen them for two years. Lots of European visitors too. Nice to see things practically back to normal.
We were surprised by an enormous humming insect yesterday at the harbour - nearly two inches long, black and yellow and a huge sting! Frantic googling led to its ID as a giant horntail (which I thought was a type of dragon from Harry Potter) and the sting is in fact an egg tube and they are harmless. Fearsome looking beast though, I have never seen one before. It's probably come out of the pile of larchwood which is being used to cover some planters, as apparently the larvae live in the timber for five years and have been known to appear out of construction timber or even furniture! Fascinating.

Jim | 21809 comments Yes you can get heavier as you get fitter, Desley.
That's why a lot of rugby players have the BMI of somebody who would otherwise be obese :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Afternoon, what a day! I had a task to print and bind 10 copies of a document, should have been really quick and easy, except our photocopier didn't want to work, had to switch the thing off 4 times because it won't let you cancel a job! Eventually got them all printed, then tried to use our new binder which only arrived yesterday lunch and messed it up on the first go, which meant another copy needed printing. After 3 hours, I finally had them done, just before the meeting they were needed for, and as I'd done 3.5k steps, I decided to skip my lunchtime walk. Went to retail park after work, as I needed to get card and gift bag for friend's birthday do tomorrow, they are re arranging the store, so the cards are on the top level now, so between that and popping in the other shops, I hit my step count, but it felt like it was pretty much all indoors and I should go for a park walk. But then I got home very warm as it was overcast when I set off, so I had boots and tights on, and 20 when I left the office, and decided that I'd do a couple of chores, so I can pretty much have a day off tomorrow as I have a busy day, and a little pamper session before tomorrow, as I can't do a face mask the same weekend I have my hair done.

Tempted to go and look that up R, glad to hear from you anyway.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Amazed you got your documents printed and bound, with that kind of pressure, Desley.

Office machines can be the pits. Right when you need them, they figure, is the best time to stage a strike.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, long day, but a good day. Did my usual early wake up, but earlier than normal, 5.45, as I was contemplating if I could get back to sleep, Lucy stood on my bladder! Had hair at 9, so when I felt a bit tired, I had to ignore it. Wasn't sure if I'd get enough steps going for afternoon tea, so walked the long way to and from the hairdresser (good job actually, as I wouldn't have done otherwise). Had a bit of time when I got back to finish getting ready, we got the earlier train there just in case there was an issue, so we nipped into M & S, as friends mum wanted to look at something and I ended up coming home with some pumps and trainer socks - I hardly ever buy shoes as between having large feet, needing non leather and a small heel, I really struggle, but this is the third pair this month, fourth this year! Hoping to wear them this week, as part of my struggle yesterday was too cool when I left for sandals, but too warm by lunch for boots and tights. Afternoon tea was OK, not the most imaginative one I've had, sandwiches for me were cucumber and cream cheese, egg mayo, cheese and spring onion mayo, humous and pepper. Think the others got the same except they got ham and mustard rather than humous and pepper. Cake was boring too, an individual victoria sponge, a fruit tart with creme patisserie, I got a random small piece of chocolate torte, everyone else got a vanilla slice. Got to try a lovely blackberry royale gin though, tempted to buy a bottle. The other downside is that it's downstairs, so we didn't see any of the lovely afternoon, then got blinded coming out into sun! They don't rush you, to the point of being annoying, as they didn't even bother clearing the plates when they came back to offer tea/coffee. It was nice to just be able to sit chatting and having a laugh, we were there for 4.5 hours, you normally get a 2 hour slot for afternoon tea.

I was amazed, there was a lot of swearing involved! Technology is one of those things that it's great when it works, and we struggle when it doesn't.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Oh printers know when you're in a hurry, without a doubt. Either that or they like being sworn at.

We have four printers in this house, and they gang up on us. The A1 drawing printer is the ringleader, because it knows the others can't do what it does. And they're just wee bams.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I bought a new printer but it only prints if all the cartridges are full and each cartridge prints about four pages. A set of five also costs twice as much as the actual printer did. I only bought it because the lamp in my scanner went and I needed another one. I've now reverted to the 20 year old printer which will is happy to print in pink only if it has to.

Currently doing a makers market. It's very quiet. We reckon everyone's at the beach. 🤣🤣

Jim | 21809 comments yes it is hot here as well

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, a very hot day here, so I wasn't bothered by waking up at 5.15. Got the washing I did last night out at 5.30, but didn't think putting the next load on that early was fair, but turns out ratty neighbour stayed out last night so I could have done! Started chores at 8.15 to avoid the weather, but when pegging second load out, ratty neighbour came home and she was very excited as she was getting new rats this morning, by the time she stopped I was getting hungry, so went to Lidl the long way, came home, ate, then did my canal walk, and chatted to a couple of people along the way, so that was longer than planned. Was pleased to get three washloads done and put away by 2pm though. As it's a sunny day, saw a lot of fish, the only size I didn't see was the fully grown ones. Just as I was coming back, I saw a duck and 2 ducklings, bigger than the ones I fed on Tue, they were fully submerging themselves to get the food that was sinking, was worried at one point as they were under for ages, mum wasn't bothered. Then ended up speaking to ratty neighbour again, but can't complain as she's said if I need anything doing after my toenail removal to give her a shout, she's even offered to put extra food in the oven to make sure I get some tea. Did mean I didn't finish my book though and haven't quite finished the chores yet! But, a nice sociable day and got to stroke a couple of dogs, they belong to someone who lives a couple of streets away, I can tell you the name of all 3 pets she's had since I've lived here, but not what she is called! Was rather touched by a friend last night, sent her a pic from afternoon tea and she said that pictures don't do me justice, I'm much better in person.

I hate printers like that MT, seems a money making scheme to me! sorry that the makers market is quiet.

Jim | 21809 comments Interesting morning, started feeding heifers and suchlike at about 7am, overcast and nicely cool, with thick mist/fog.
Then at exactly 9:15am the sun burnt through it and it was hot, just as if you'd flicked a switch :-)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It's absolutely boiling here. I'm doing St Alban's comicon this Sunday so just sorting my selection of books. Doing cosplay but sadly, the cloak isn't going to arrive in time so I'll be dressed as Marcella The Pirate because that's the only costume I can rustle up at short notice! :-) Unless I just go for the hat and paisley shirt.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, apparently it got up to 28, but I was so cool with having bare legs and sandals that I kept my cardigan on all day. Quite a bit of wildlife at work, had a daft pigeon who didn't want to fly off, my tire was level before it decided moving was a good idea, then I spooked a rabbit as I was driving into my spot. As we left the office, there was a black and white cat in the car park. Didn't walk at lunch as didn't want to get stung, colleague who was bringing gardening gloves is off sick with Covid. Did a canal walk after work, loads of fish again. I was contemplating how large one shoal was as an elderly couple asked me what I was looking at, so I pointed out the fish to them, they said they didn't realise how many fish were in the canal and thanked me for showing them. Then decided to see if there was anything interesting in the reduced section and bumped into colleague who's on maternity leave, so we had a little chat, then I got home in time to finish my book. Ironically, it was written in 1980 and one part said they thought electricity would be obsolete within 10 years, over 40 years later, no sign of that!

Hope you didn't get too hot, not being dressed for hot weather Jim! Good luck sorting the costume out MT

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another daft pigeon on the lane this morning, luckily today's was at a point I could drive round it. Not as warm today and mainly overcast, even had a few mins of rain, I'd gone to work with tights and pumps today, didn't take any of my layers off - we had a meeting this pm, everyone was complaining it was warm, I walked out of the meeting room and it was so cold, wish I could have worked in there all afternoon! I deliberately didn't walk at lunch, didn't think 4 people would want to sit in a meeting room for 2 hours with me if I did! Did a canal walk after work, too overcast to see much but did spot a couple of fish. Not sure my hip is happy at me wearing 4 pairs of shoes in 2 days, it was a bit painful but I walked through it, as I'll not be doing much after next Wed - as much as I'm not looking forward to having my toenail removed, it has got to the painful point again, so I should feel quite a bit of relief.

Jim | 21809 comments Hope the op goes well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, cooler than yesterday, but brighter, so felt warmer. My meetings went better than expected, the first only lasted 30 mins, so I ended up with a split lunch, I ate before and walked after, there was a woman walking slowly in front of me and it wasn't wide enough to overtake, so I walked the opposite way and glad I did, saw a shoal of about 30 of the largest bream near the lock, then a similar size shoal of slightly smaller, but clearly adult bream on the other side of the lock, never seen them there. Did my usual canal walk after work and saw loads of fish of all sizes.

Thanks Jim - one of the things I'm dreading most is not being able to do my walks for a bit after, I read that walking should be fairly easy after 48 hours, but avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks, I suspect my 3 mile canal walks should fit under strenuous, with the bridges and uneven surfaces. Hopefully weather will stay dry so I can at least sit outside reading.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Here's hoping the recovery will be easy and swift - just be sure to take good care of yourself.

You know what works - and this will really help in the long run/walk.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, lovely day, apart from dealing with annoying people at work, had two of them by 8.12 - I start at 8! Went for a canal walk at lunch, but coffee shop had posted about some new cakes and couldn't resist rose and pistachio loaf cake, thought I better go today, and bumped into my new neighbours, so was chatting to them, pleased it's also their favourite coffee shop. Loads of fish sunbathing again, saw all but the very large ones. Didn't get as much steps in as I was chatting, so did a quick park walk after work, and bumped into Bert and his owner, she sounded genuinely pleased to see me again, which I thought was really sweet. Then went to my friends, it was her actual birthday today so me and her family were round, just had pizza, nibbles and cake, but their garden gets the sun till late, so it was nice to sit outside chatting - apparently the friend who organised the afternoon tea on Sat thought it was a shame my birthday plans got ruined last year, so she's going to organise something for me, but a different place than last week fortunately - I said I was happy with how things worked out, but if she wants to arrange afternoon tea, I'll show up!

Thanks Alicia

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, glad that week is over, had so much stuff come in that I haven't had chance to do some of the things I wanted to tackle this week. Morning was rather stressful, at least the first meeting finished early, but then issues with both the deadlines, at least they were both done with an hour to spare and I did get thanked. Decided to do a walk round the lodge and glad I did, I could hear some weird squeaking, looked at the lodge to see, hidden by the foliage, 2 coots with babies (which google tells me are called cooties), fairly sure there were 4 but couldn't get a pic. Then on the way back I disturbed a rabbit. Busy after work, car repair people wanted some pics, so decided to do it in the car park, as struggled to get angles the first time with how I park in front of the house, then decided to nip to Lidl in the car to get a couple of things that are a bit heavy to walk home with. Got home to find I'd missed a parcel (not expecting any), so walked to the post office, but unfortunately it hadn't got back there, then realised I forgot my TV mag and I'd hit my step count, so just walked to co-op for it, as my pumps aren't as comfortable as some of my other shoes, and then did a couple of chores. Done 7.7k steps and 40 consecutive days of hitting my step count, if it wasn't for my toenail, I might have managed 50!

Jim | 21809 comments Good going on the count.
I am currently trying to make Turkish coffee :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, day didn't go quite as planned but worked out really well. Had my usual rubbish night sleep so wasn't up as early as I'd hoped. Amazon decided to split my subscribe and save in 3 orders, 2 with Royal Mail and 1 with Amazon, luckily the one yesterday was light enough to walk home from the post office with. Royal Mail don't give you a timeslot though, and our Rushbearing Festival was back for the first time since covid, so really wanted to go. No sign of it being at the local office when it started at 11, so I nipped to the post office (ended up leaving the same time as ratty neighbour, she was telling me two of the rats have got respiratory infections and one isn't responding well to meds) and then round to at least see what stalls there were, won a couple of things on tombola's and stayed a bit longer than expected, as bumped into a friend and had a chat. Got back, did a few chores, then sat outside reading, delivery eventually arrived at 3 and festival finished at 4, so I dumped it on the floor and went round. Good job I had gone round earlier, it had been so busy most of the stalls had packed up early and left, the coffee shop had their van there, so had a chat with them, then walking friend had said she would be there, she didn't say she was helping on a stall (well, not really helping, given she is still in casts after breaking wrist and finger!), so ended up chatting to her for 2 hours, it was nice standing chatting in the sun. First time I've seen her since she fell out with me last year, we have said we'll have a day out next month, I'm going to suggest dates early next week, now we've chatted and it seemed like things were normal between us. I was going to do a canal walk as I hadn't hit my step count, but was getting late so did a quick walk round the park then on the way back, Bert's owner was in her garden, I said hello and she came to the gate, gave me a lovely warm welcome and invited me to have a glass of wine with her and her friend, I said I better not as the cat's hadn't been fed, but had a little chat, we actually now know each other's names, but when I gave her mine, her response was 'I have a friend called Desley' - never had that reaction to my name before, walking friend's friend's reaction is more common 'did you say Lesley or Wesley'? I'm quite surprised that she is so friendly after only 4 times of bumping into each other, but it's really nice

Thanks Jim, hope the turkish coffee worked out.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I love how you build reading time in, Desley.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Yeah, didn't quite get enough to finish my book today, but happy with the socialising I did instead. I said to walking friend I can't decide what weather would be best after my toe op, sunny means I could sit out reading and might pass the time quicker (although elevating foot would be tricky), and bad weather would make it easier to lie on sofa/bed elevating foot.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments The recovery time will be in the rearview mirror soon enough - just be comfortable. Now would be the time to locate a sturdy box to put near your outside chair with a pillow for your foot - and try it out.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I know, I'm just not used to sitting around in my house! Well, there is no lack of sturdy boxes with the cat food deliveries this week, I just don't think I want to carry boxes weighing 12kg! /Unless I take out the inners, they are only 4kgI might drag the reclining chair out though, it might just be enough. What I probably should have replied with yesterday was 'of course I build in reading time, best part of the day' :)

Jim | 21809 comments Coffee worked but I may not have made it as strong as the original. More experimentation is needed :-)

You have Rushbearing?
A neighbouring village has it, with rush queen, knights, the full works :-)

There's no fair but after a brief service everybody goes and eats gingerbread and drinks tea or coffee supplied by the people of the village

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Good luck getting it stronger, Turkish coffee is a lot stronger than ours isn't it? I only like their apple tea.

We do, it's normally a full weekend event, on Sat the rushcart comes from one of the pubs into the park and on the Sun it comes from somewhere to the square, I like it because there is lots on, both days have entertainment and stalls, but Sun is normally more charity focused, which is how I got involved with the charity Lucy is from. We have some weird entertainment, I can only recognise morris dancers and vikings, not sure what the black costumes are. My mum used to take us when I was a kid, it was one of the things I missed most during first lockdown, think it was only the second I'd missed since being a kid.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, got up to 29 today, was a bit hot at times for me! It was 23 when I went out at 11.30 for my walk, I decided to go to the nature reserve as haven't been for a couple of weeks, and saw some new fish, these were in a stream that we did see tiny fish earlier in the year, but some of these were quite large, but they were brown spotty ones that blended in with the bottom - I've only ever looked at the top bit where we saw tiny ones, but today everytime I got to a deeper bit I stopped and looked, and saw loads and for quite a distance too, not sure what they would be in a stream, then I went to Lidl as they were out of olives on Fri and bumped into Bert's mum twice! Also had a nice chat with one of my neighbours and reminded her of one of the nice places to walk round here.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I guess I should have said 'footstool' rather than box.

More a reminder that things need time to heal properly - if not, the bother to fix them up again can be fierce.

Indulge yourself! Extra reading! Some lazing about! You are entitled to it - and it will make things better after. You're a go-getter, and enforced idleness won't be easy, but will be important.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, very warm here, apparently got to 33 according to the computer, I went to my sis's at lunch and it was 30. I only started getting warm about 3.30 (and finish at 4.30). I had to do another 4 copies of the document that caused so much issues the other week, but luckily I've learnt from my mistakes and it only took a short while. I had less than 2k steps left to hit my step count when I got home, so even though it was still 30, I made myself get out, but literally only just hit my count, that was enough! Did a slightly different circuit, and found fish in parts of the canal I've never seen them before, although makes sense as it's the bit between the two other places I see them! At one point there were 4 really big fish, I stopped to watch them, and the geese thought I was going to feed them, so started swimming over regardless of the fish! There was something that looked like a dredging machine in the canal, so popped into candle shop to see if they knew what it was, but they didn't. Now just waiting for friend to collect her delivery, she said she was just eating an hour and a quarter ago.

Thanks Alicia, it's quite ironic I'm not at all bothered by the procedure, just the staying in my house afterwards, walking has been one of the best things to stop loneliness since falling out with neighbour, but at least I'm aiming to work on Thu and Fri, and have some meetings on Fri, so will get to see people on teams at least. I have enough books and TV shows to keep me entertained.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments You'll get back to walking, and enjoy it all the more because of missing it - once all the healing is done, it will be easier and more pleasant to go on those long walks, I hope.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, according to my phone it got to 37 today, which I can accept, as I got uncomfortably warm and it has to be over 30 for that to happen! I was dreading my 1.5 hour occupational health talk, but that wing was lovely and cool, wanted to stay there and work! I've decided I must be obsessed with my step count, even though it was 31, I went for a walk, glad I did, I was stood counting perch when someone walked past and asked if I was counting fish - he likes to fish, so was telling me some stuff, including that the brown spotty fish I saw on Sun would be brown trout, and that we mustn't have pike in the canal this year, as there are a lot of fish, normally if there are pike they eat all the tiny fish. Have also decided that I should probably rest my foot for the first week, and the best way to do that is to set some targets, so I'm going to catch up on my book challenges, read a book, watch a film and watch a TV series.

Yes, that is true Alicia, and why I think I'm not bothered by the actual procedure, it's got to the painful stage again, so at least that will be over.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, despite not being able to do my canal walk, I did have a bit of a wildlife day, disturbed a young squirrel driving down the lane, poor thing didn't know what to do! Then as I was leaving at lunch, disturbed a young rabbit. Left work, and despite knowing 2.5 hours was plenty of time, I raced round doing shopping and chores and got very hot and sweaty! Not helped by the black bag holding the dirty cat litter breaking over my foot so had to hoover, then shower my foot! Doctor wasn't sure he'd be able to do my toe, he wasn't sure the scissors would be strong enough to get through my thick nail, but I told him to try anyway, luckily he managed it. Did have to have extra anaesthetic though, then she had to use an extra bandage, good job I took other sandals as they are the only pair of shoes I can get over the bandages! She said I'd be fine to hobble to the taxi rank, as it's only round the corner, but not to walk home, getting there and then down my street was painful, I've yet to go upstairs, but need to shortly to feed the cats! Instructions say to wear open toed shoes for 2 weeks, so I'm not going to risk walks, in case it gets caught on anything. I'd nipped in the coffee shop on the way and got a white choc chip scone, absent mindedly dumped my handbag on the floor when I got back, realised when I heard an odd noise to notice Lucy was in my handbag trying to move my book to get to the scone!! Thought I'd have been safe with white choc.

White chocolate is really only essence of chocolate, but the smell comes from the cocoa. I don't know if it is as deadly to dogs, but wouldn't want to take the risk. Hope it was delicious!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, last night was interesting, was hard finding a comfy spot in bed, then Lucy promptly walked over my foot to get her supper, then when she'd eaten her supper, thought she'd sit on my legs, so had to lie with one leg out from under the quilt to stop her! Had a bad night sleep, and have felt really tired all day, have had 3 naps, it's not my usual tiredness, I know anaesthetic can do that, but didn't think local anaesthetic in your toe would! My after work nap got cut short when Lucy woke me up after 20 minutes standing on my foot again! Took the extra bandage off after work, it has bled a lot. Have caught it a couple of times, not sure if it is because the bandage made my toe bigger, so I couldn't judge it the same, or that typical thing where you catch sore parts more than you would normally.

We've given up worrying about what Lucy eats - at least I can control it more now, when she could jump on the worktop, I discovered she liked hot cross buns (which contain dried fruit that is toxic to cats) when I had one in a food bag defrosting overnight, got up to find she'd ripped through the food bag and eaten part of the hot cross bun - hopefully it had defrosted by then! And she's eaten through tin foil to get at Christmas cake, and drawn blood to get stollen! Giving her tiny amounts of things normally stops her scavenging and I can control which bits of it she eats (i.e. bits with no dried fruit!)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Animals don't always know what's good for them - the dogs that eat too much chocolate (I don't know how much is too much) don't seem to know it is toxic to them.

Ditto house plant leaves.

Dried fruit I didn't know (don't have a cat). Hope she's okay.

Hope the toe is better soon - ouch!
