Jim | 21809 comments Be strong, I'd hate to see a lady lured into a life of hard work and respectability :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, was woken up 3 times in the night by my toe feeling numb, so am trying to get a telephone consultation with the doctor, need to try again at 8am tomorrow! Today's 11 deadline was done at 10.50, then I had to start on the backlog of my own work, but there is just so much of it I kept staring at the computer wondering where to start. Foot was quite painful today, I'd brought sandals in just in case and it was slightly better with those on, so maybe I've started wearing shoes too soon, even though it did say after 2 weeks, and have agreed with my boss I'll just do 2 days in the office this week. Got home to find I'd missed a parcel delivery, so need to go to the post office tomorrow, and you can't really park near there, then one of my nail varnish deliveries had arrived but they sent the wrong items, so need to faff about returning those.

Well, there is the irony Alicia, ratty neighbour was trying to tell me I shouldn't have gone to see my friend as my foot had started to hurt, yet it was talking to her twice before I'd gone that set it off, then she got me talking a third time even though I'd told her I was supposed to be working (and she knew I was seeing my friend)! I did ignore the washloads I wanted to do, we have a whole week of nice weather, so I can spread it out, and I am being good at things like not parking as far away from the building as I usually do (not quite as far as using our disabled spots though!)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Sorry it's gone painful again, Desley. Good idea to go into the office fewer times.

People are thoughtless - and the world is not designed for the mobility-impaired.

You can make a point of it (you have another foot coming!), if you will make sure to stop someone who is talking to you until you can find a comfortable seat - even if they say, "This will only take a minute." Because it NEVER takes just a minute.

And put your foot up. After two or three times, maybe they'll get it or leave you alone!

Feet are a problem because normally they carry all our weight - a lot on each square inch of sole.

I just get very selfish, and find a place to sit down - or LEAVE. Sigh. I've had to do that now with sitting on my Airwheel S8, because no matter what I do with gel seats and such, it still isn't comfortable for long. Moving is less of a problem (maybe because I use my feet actively to balance), but standing still gets excruciating very quickly.

Go ahead, take care of yourself. They'll live.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We're in the middle of festival season here and our wee town is busting at the seams. The Fringe has moved away from the harbour and is all in the park so we're not hearing any of the music nor able to enjoy the food offerings (or the bar!). Highlight so far has been a puffling (yes, that is actually the name of a baby puffin) somehow finding its way onto the stage whilst Texas were performing. It was caught by the lead singer and taken (by others) back down to the beach where it swam off. We also had the first Highland Games since 2019 at the weekend so that tripled the population for the day too! Still windy...

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, decided against ringing the doc this morning as toe hasn't gone numb since, and I think my cautiousness isn't helping, keeping it bandaged longer than it needs, which stops my toe bending, and even though it said that you can wear shoes after 2 weeks, think the traffic jam on Thu that made my foot swell means I shouldn't wear socks and full shoes, I've only worn slippers and sandals today and is much better. I had to go to chemist and post office at lunch, while it is painful to walk, nothing like when I walked down part of the same path on Sun with my pumps on and my toe still looks fine after going out uncovered in sandals. Work started off nice and quiet, was doing well at catching up and then I don't know what happened! As my foot was feeling better, I did some housework after work, sat down and had a quick scroll on the phone, to come across a poem called 'Dust if you Must', I won't find it on here, but it's basically loads of better ways to spend your time than dusting, I did like the line about listening to music and read a book, which is ironic as that is what I do after work these days!

Sounds like a lot going on R! Lucky puffling

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, busy day at work but foot feels better - I do need to remember that my feet are temperamental and what takes minutes to aggravate, can take months to heal. I can bend my toe much better and a lot less swollen. Cat litter delivery came today, it even coped with moving 5 20l bags of cat litter, and doing a bit of housework. Just need to get Lucy's litter, then apart from treats, the cats have enough till next year. Very warm today, and supposed to be hotter the next two days.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Hope the surgery will make your feet much less temperamental.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Sadly not, this might help my ingrowing toenail, but not the bunions or arthritis.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Darn.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments And if I've been impatient with this, I dread to think how I'll find it when I eventually have the bunions removed

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments It's not resting forever - you'll do fine. But you may have to relax at home with your feet up and a good book more than you've been doing. That doesn't sound bad at all.

Awww. We have an ongoing joke about puffing pants because, when he gets into the pool, McMini’s swimming trunks bulge out around him like tudor trousers.

Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "And if I've been impatient with this, I dread to think how I'll find it when I eventually have the bunions removed"

The trick is not to look at how far you have to go but keep comparing how you are now with previous weeks. As time goes on you begin to see how fast you are improving.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, hit 30 here today, which is when I stop feeling comfortable! Took advantage of my WFH day to get some washing done, couldn't believe how hot they were when I brought them in. I was going to the shop at lunch, but then got an e-mail saying Lucy's biscuits were being delivered between 12.30 and 2.30, lunch is 12.30-1.30 - typically, as I waited, they arrived about 2pm! Did do some chores in my lunchbreak instead. Went to the shop after work, foot is a bit more sore today, but not as swollen, so still going in the office tomorrow.

At least I'll have time to practice 'sitting on my bum' as ratty neighbour described it Alicia, it shouldn't be that hard! Thanks MT, I'm trying to appreciate that my feet do take a while to settle down, and glad that I only had to bathe and dress it for two weeks, when it said 2-6.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another warm day, car said 29 on the way home, and I ended up working an extra hour trying to sort out a few bits as I'm off Mon and Tue, and my boss has to go to London on Mon, so didn't want to leave her with too much. Foot was painful driving, but then fine when walking round the office, although I am currently sat with a cold compress (could only find my eye mask, not the proper ice pack, but hey, they tie round your foot well!), in the hope that's going to help the swelling. Got a busy long weekend as my family are up, so will have to push through. Did nip to Lidl on the way home to get something from the special buy (and may have come home with more ice cream!), did my one chore for the day, then realised I hadn't done my out of office, so had to switch the laptop back on, but didn't get distracted with the e-mails.

Jim | 21809 comments I can think of no better day for coming home with more ice cream. It's ice cream season :)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I came home with 2 boxes yesterday too :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We had haar yesterday and it never lifted. Didn't get above 16 all day. Two miles inland - as sunny and as hot as the previous two days. It's dull again this morning!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had a lovely weekend with family, been so hot though, was supposed to be 30 both days, but car today said 28. Ended up going to the Artisan market with all my family, we couldn't make the coffee shop unfortunately, but had a bit of lunch and mooch round some shops, then a BBQ at our friends. Today had family meal, then went to candle shop for ice cream, I treated the kids to a bath bomb each and got them a bag of bird food each to feed the geese - one ate of my sis' hand, and my nephew stroked one, I've not been brave enough to get that close! They ended up walking the opposite direction along the canal than I wanted, but we did see a deer, 2 llama and some fish, so wasn't too bad. Then came home and read for a bit, was full on with 2 9 year olds and a 2 year old. I actually managed to hit my step count yesterday for the first time since my toe op, I've been getting new pain in it this weekend, not sure if it's just at a certain point of healing, the extra exercise, or being out so much in the heat.

Been busily working on the final draft of my latest non-seller - The Truth About Trees. Not even half way through the rewrite and it has somehow expanded from 72,000 words to 98,000!

Well hope you fine souls are all thriving!

Woah! nice work. I have about 120k of something that was supposed to be a short and it's just mushroomed into some horrific three book epic so I totally get that. The travels sound awesome! Enjoy!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Morning, was a lovely, if expensive and painful day, with sis in law yesterday. We went to a local reservoir that is so low you can see the original bridge and some bits of the village that was there, so we were able to walk on parts that are normally under water (not sure if it is just the lack of rain, as there was a diving company on what looked like a floating pontoon investigating the dam wall), bits were even sandy! It was painful walking over stones, but didn't want to miss the chance, did have to wash my feet though, they were filthy as I had my walking sandals on. Then we had a lovely cheese and onion pie, before going shopping, managed to get a new work dress, and two pairs of trousers, one for work and one for weekend, plus some new cat bedding (and a candle fell in!). Bro wanted to go to Nando's, I couldn't face eating, but agreed to go to spend more time with them, and just had a side. Popped back to feed the cats, and got home just as the amazon man was taking my boxes out of the van, then heard ratty neighbour come home and went to give her her nail varnishes, Lily, one of the rats wanted to say hello, we were stood outside when bro came to collect me, so I got them to come down to see if my nephew would say hello to the rat, she was all over my brother! Ended up doing 11.7k steps, foot is so sore today. Do have some chores to do (did like my sis in laws suggestion of more for this weekend, but we need to do some stuff), and if my prescription is ready I'll leave the house to get it and my parcel from the post office, but my main priorities for today are to watch a film and finish my book.

Ooh, some interesting places there Stuart.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, busy day at work, boss has been in London, so she's not been able to do much of my work, am hoping for a quiet day tomorrow so I can catch up. Was wet and windy when I left, so I put my pumps on, but took my sandals in, which turned out a wise idea as it turned into a lovely day, at 3pm I could feel my toenail stinging, so went to swap shoes, had to drop something off for someone on the way, and had a lovely chat with one of our health and safety advisors, who gave me some tips and made me feel better, it does seem like it's just me being impatient and I should take more tablets :) Even though it was painful by the time I finished work, I carried on with getting a couple of bits from the retail park and Aldi, as driving is the most painful thing, so this way, I don't have to get back in the car till Mon, I'll pick up fresh fruit and veg then. Didn't end up doing very much yesterday, my foot kept cramping when I tried to do chores, like it was telling me something!

Nice to have independent confirmation that rest - and painkillers and/or anti-inflammatories are a good thing.

Your foot knows best.

Take notes for next time.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, managed to have a catch up day today, so that feels good. Did some errands at lunch, got part way to the post office when I realised I hadn't picked up my undelivered post card, thought I'd try anyway as my foot was too sore to walk home to get it and I had my ID. She commented that she'd do it this once, but they get paid for those cards, so I told her I'd drop it in next time I'm passing. Then went to chemist, even though I hadn't had a text to say my prescription was ready, turns out they have computer issues! Slipped on the step as I was leaving and jarred my bad foot, didn't actually think I was going to make it home, but I did, so instead of doing some housework, I just had to lie on the sofa with my foot elevated - at least two of the things I was picking up were painkillers and anti inflammatories, going to try taking painkillers on a regular basis and increase anti-inflams over the weekend. More nail varnishes arrived today, so have tried one on each nail, must post some pics over the weekend. Had to give up reading a book today, there was no warning about animal cruelty on it, and I was that bothered by it I actually contemplated throwing it in the bin, but have decided to write a warning in it before putting it on the charity pile.

My body clearly knows the ways to make me rest! Yes, it has only been 4 weeks, its just annoying that this isn't technically my toe nail removal, just hope it doesn't drag on for months like it has when I've hurt my foot.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hope the foot keeps improving Desley. It's so hard to be patient with this stuff and you have my sympathy.

Bit of a nothing day today but did find out about any negative impact applying for carer's allowance might have on Mum's council tax single person's discount; none! Woot. So I can go ahead and apply.

message 16978: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Yes, hopefully things will improve Desley. I suspect there is a balance to be struck between resting it, and keeping moving so it stays flexible.

Glad you've got you have got on top of that for your Mum MT

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I’ve just picked blackberries. I only brought about half of them home and they are absolutely amazing. McOther and I just stuffed our faces straight from the bowl. We are disgusting. I’ve put the rest in the fridge. They were really, really good though. Om nom nom. :-)

Now I have a coronation chicken dish to finish cooking and I’ll be able to relax for an hour or so outside with my iPad and do some writing I hope.

message 16980: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Mmm, MT, blackberries!

Sorry you keep re-injuring the foot, Desley. And the pain of a newly healing part is disproportionate.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, been naughty today, first there was too much cardboard for the recycling bin, so I sneaked up the street a few times this morning to use other neighbours bin (it's collection day today), then it's supposed to rain all weekend, so as I can only wear sandals, I popped to the coffee shop at lunch to get cake, and after work, friend wanted to take her boys to look at the reservoir I went to on Mon, so I went with (she was more concerned about my foot than I was! Would have been better if I'd remembered to take painkillers before going though), we didn't do quite the ramble me and sis-in-law did though, and the bonus was she took me to co-op on the way back so I could get milk, and then dropped me home, still did 8k steps. At least work was quiet and feel a lot more caught up. Only plans for the weekend is chores, suspect I'll see a lot of the sofa.

Glad you can apply for carer's allowance MT, we were picking blackberries on Sun, some were quite sour though - was looking at them while walking round the reservoir earlier, one side were ripening nicely, one part that is more shaded were still small and green! Yes, suspect there is a balance Jim, it's normally fine straight after I get up in the morning, but I feel like it needs some movement to help with the swelling

message 16982: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Glad you had a good day Desley. I totally get the move enough to keep the swelling in check but not so much that you make it worse conundrum. Did some writing this avo which was grand. 😁

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, I've been good today, weather was nicer than forecast, so I've got two washloads done (although most of the second is drying in the house as I couldn't be bothered putting the second line up), and I couldn't be bothered doing the housework I was supposed to, made sure the cat bowls were washed and I have at least been moving stuff round rooms so at least everything I bought over my weekend off has been put away finally. All I wanted to do this morning was paint my new sample nail tips (so I can test colours without painting my nails) while watching TV, then when the sun came over, I sat and read 30% of an 898 page book. So foot feels happy, I've only done 1.4k steps.

Never mind my stubbornness of feeling like I should push through it as I'm used to walking in pain!! Glad you got some writing done, I did read your blog earlier and sending hugs, wishing something would end for someone doesn't make you horrible, it's because you love them and don't want them to suffer x

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Afternoon, another lazy day today, had a bad night sleep, so had a nap after my lunch (although only got about half an hour, which was enough to make me feel I could do some chores), just got the washing up to do, then am going to do some dry brushing nail art while reading my book. I commented further up on your blog post. I'm not actually sure who owns the reservoir, I know who it was built by, but not sure they still exist and it was a different council who were there on Monday litter picking. One sign did say public right of way, but don't think the farmers like it, as they've put up their own unofficial signs.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Jim should comment, but I would assume that farmers can deal with a FEW polite visitors or hikers, and are mostly overwhelmed by the thoughtlessness and ignorance of so many in the 'general public.'

It's a shame when something nice is ruined for those who would be respectful and careful by those who won't control themselves, their children, their vehicles, or their dogs. OR their trash.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, quiet day today, cleaner confirmed she can come on Fri, so I've started tidying, figured if I did it over more days I wouldn't have as much, and then rewarded myself by reading. And one of the nail kits I was going to get on payday came down in price, so I had to buy it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another quiet day at work, but we got our payslips today, my pay rise is way more than I expected (unlike last year when it was half what I expected!!), not sure what I'll do with it. Had to see friend after work to get my key for the cleaner, and had a brew and chat, so that was nice - she thinks my nails remind her of ice cream (will post a pic this weekend), I'm impressed how well they've lasted. Put my walking sandals on and it was a lot less painful than my work sandals, so think I'll be going to work for the next two days in walking sandals, will look a bit odd, but if it's more comfortable! And Mon I did take them off part of the day and sat with just socks on.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, didn't get on yesterday as went to see a retired colleague after work, as we heard at the weekend he has terminal cancer. I barely recognised him with how much weight he's lost, and he didn't recognise me, don't think I've seen him since he retired, which he said was in 2007. Glad I did it anyway.

Fairly quiet day at work, had a nice chat with our managing director, he's another person with the sensible attitude of do what pleases you, regardless of what people say, think that's why I'm much happier now, neighbour and walking friend were dismissive of things I liked that they didn't, and the only important thing is that I enjoy what I'm doing, however 'boring' it might seem to other people. Went for petrol after work, and nipped in Morrisons to see if they had any nice clothes, unfortunately the ones I liked weren't in my size, and I didn't do my usual go OTT at being in a supermarket that isn't Aldi or Lidl (mainly because I haven't finished the last lot of stuff I went OTT on, and I haven't been since July!). Foot has been cramping a bit today, a colleague thought it might be that I didn't drink enough yesterday, rather than doing too much. At least the cleaner has been today, so I don't need to do much, although I did make her happy, she messaged thanking me for being patient and giving her some wax melts, and I said it was a good thing, made me realise that it is worthwhile paying someone to do something I can do myself, just not as good as her, and she seemed happy that her work is appreciated. So then I finished my book, 898 pages in a week!! Looking forward to a long weekend with hardly any chores, even going to attempt a 3 mile walk on Mon (I'd have rather done Sun, but friend wants to go on Mon

Well, walking round an office in walking sandals probably isn't appropriate Jim, but at least I'm not wearing a knee length dress with them! Thanks for the congrats, although we did all get a pay rise to help with the cost of living crisis, but appreciated all the same. I have had a few thanks this week, partly for things that shouldn't really be part of my job.
