Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning!

Here's the link to the touch typing thingy.

It's free, apparently.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12607 comments Urgh, woke up even earlier today - 6., gave up at 6.30. Am hoping that I can have a nap soon. Got home quite late yesterday, so didn't do that much housework, so that needs doing today. We went to M & S food before the pet shop, being restrained in there was hard, they might be expensive but they do interesting vegi stuff. Then was really cold, so had a hot drink from Costa for the journey home. Foot is really complaining after all the lifting yesterday.

Good luck with the writing Alicia. Read your pontifications blog to the cats last night Jim, seemed to go down well. https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group... Did find it quite sad that this is just another in a long line of things affecting farmers in general though

BTW, there are usually little bumps on the j and f keys so you can find them.

I learned to touch type under duress really but it was the best thing I ever did. Having spent three years at university in order not to have to be a secretary I graduated into a massive recession and had to do a secretarial course and be a secretary. It included touch typing. I eventually fell into a job at a Sponsorship/PR company. My boss said that if I got the seccy stuff done I could train as an account executive. The faster I typed the more training/executive stuff I could do. I learned to type extremely chuffing fast.

Even now, I still type faster than I can go with dictation software. Also, I find it a strain talking at it like the Queen all the time. I have a soft voice and if I talk normally it hasn’t a fucking clue what I’m saying.

To be honest, touch typing remains about the single most useful skill I ever learned, along with things like walking and potty training! ;-)

Cheers

MTM

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! My laptop's so old, Mary, that the little bumps have worn down and my ancient guitar hardened fingertips can't feel them.

Morning, each. Hope it's a good one!

message 9506: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Patti, that is brilliant. Thank you. I'll look at it in a mo.

MT, that made me laugh. That was certainly an incentive to get super-fast. The dictation think is challenging for me. I started out with a west of Scotland accent (Ayrshire), and have spent the last 30-odd years working and dealing with people with accents from all over the world. I think I've picked up odd bits here and there.

Thanks re the "bumps". I always wondered why they were there!!!!

Will report back on progress.

Jemima Pett | 48 comments The cold outside took my breath away this morning. Decided not to go out for a walk, even though it's gorgeously sunny.

Patti (baconater) wrote: "Do look at the new 'most read authors' thread.

It is indeed.

Sorry to have missed keeping up with you all this week... last minute stuff over events happening on Tuesday. Not that anyone will notice them :)

message 9508: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments I'm going to make the assumption that typing 13 words per minute isn't exactly speedy!

Actually, what should I aim for as words per minute? What would be super-speedy?

message 9509: by Jemima (last edited Jan 20, 2019 05:05AM) (new)

Jemima Pett | 48 comments In the old days, a copy typist was about 60 words a minute and a good secretary was 80-100. (shorthand 120+) On the other hand, if you are typing the words as they come out of your brain, it depends how much self-editing you do as you type...
...as in 'hang on, I've just used that word twice in this paragraph already'
...or "damn I typed manger AGAIN" and going back to add another a.
So something in the 30 wpm would be v. good.

I reckon I can do a 1000 word flash in 45 mins, but it'll need a good read-through and not much thinking time.

message 9510: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Thanks Jemima, that's helpful. Yes, I do edit as I go along.

I'll let you know if I get to 30 words a minute!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12607 comments Good luck in improving Kelly!

Forgot to mention, Virgin Media did turn up again yesterday, and started drilling at 9am. They have done the channels and stoned them, now we are waiting for someone to come and do the tarmac, I hope they wait till tomorrow, will make it easier for them. Neighbour asked if I wanted to go to Asda with her as cat food is on offer, I said no - partly because my feet are so sore though, it's hard enough getting through the housework.

Been to London to help settle K's ex into saddened accommodation where his Parkinson's can b monitored and then my laptop has died. It's less than a year old so back of under warranty - not helpful in January with my busines s. Plus I don r type too quickly on this Fire fablet. It's no good for

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

I can touch type, didn't do a course it just came naturally so I probably use the wrong fingers on the wrong keys but it works for me. I did a test in work one time and I got silver for speed.

I've been wiped out for the last week with tonsillitis. I had white spots on my tonsils on Monday night so rather than phoning the GP on Tuesday I just stayed in bed because someone had told me that they don't see you for tonsillitis anymore unless you've had it for 3 days. No one said that if you have pus on your tonsils you should get there tout suite. I never knew there was a kind of tonsillitis where you didn't have white spots on your tonsils. I was horrendously ill on Tuesday night so I phoned the next day and came home with a shed load of tablets. Feeling much better today, first day I haven't felt the need for pain relief! Still got some antibiotics left to take.

How are your two patients keeping, Lynne? Hope you are feeling better today Kath and Desley. Good luck with your all the parents admin Mary!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12607 comments Well, fortunately traffic wasn’t as bad, the virgin media people were there again and ratty neighbour was talking to them as I was leaving, then involved me in the conversation! Maybe I just need to set off 5 mins later! Feet are much better today, but knee isn’t – think that it is reacting to wearing heels again after 2 weeks of barely wearing them. And I was out of magnets, hopefully they will arrive this week. Did wake up early today, but didn’t want to get out of bed – I do regret it at 4.30 when the majority of people go home and I have to stay, there are normally two people who still do 9-5.30 but neither are in today. At least it’s my last full week till at least the end of Feb, and have 4 days to take in March.

Sorry you have been so ill Jud, hope you recover soon. Sorry your energy levels aren't back yet Kath.

I do around 90 but it slows up to about 60 or 70 if I’m trying to avoid errors!

message 9528: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Wow, that's a great speed, MT. I'm going to aim for 60, although I imagine it'll take quite a wee while to get there.

My speed actually fell to 11 wpm as I went through the course. Damn, I knew moving away from the Home keys would slow me down!

message 9529: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Don't understand why they don't remove tonsils anymore. I know so many people who suffer bouts of tonsillitis again and again and again.
I hope you recover soon, Judster.

Pagoda is at it again this morning. It stopped about 6 yesterday morning. Sooner would be better.

Got a double lesson with my year 8s today. I've got them doing a big project on Chinese New Year, leading to a presentation including a skit to the whole school in a couple of weeks. I'm very impressed with how they're coping with it.
Out for dinner after work. A friend has had a friend visiting and she leaves tomorrow. Gotta give her a good send off.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Finally starting to be daylight when I walk to the station.

Hope you feel better, Jud.

message 9531: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning!

Last day of antibiotics today.

Finally 88% through Vanity Fair, I've been trying to focus on reading more the last few days rather than doing other things but there is so little time. My line manager was off yesterday so I got a fair bit of reading done on the cloud reader :o)

I'm getting through my audiobooks more than my dead tree books.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12607 comments Magnets had arrived when I got home, so knee is 90% better now, although my left wrist is really sore, not sure what I have done there. Downside is I’ve had to put the boots I think are affecting my knee on, and it is going in my hip a bit, keep taking my shoes off! Street doesn’t look as bad as I thought, although I’ve not seen it in daylight yet – it was quite uneven and bumpy, but seems that they have rolled over the whole street to do the two channels, so it is flatter, and they got rid of the mistake my neighbour made trying to fill in one of the puddles. Woke up early, so we were up early enough to get to work early – sounded like it was raining, so was surprised when I opened the front door and the car was white! So had to set off 10 mins earlier to sweep the car, and allow for what the roads might be like, the worst bit was our car park, I got to work as they were gritting it! Snowing again here, but while we have big flakes, there isn’t much substance to them. Hope it doesn’t get worse, Lucy is at the vets at 5.40

How odd that your speed dropped while learning Kelly. I don’t know how fast I type, but I’m not that accurate, too reliant on autocorrect! I do wish I could get into audio books Jud, I'd get through loads

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments What are the magnets for Desley? Mum is having a lot of pain in her knees and shoulder and I'm looking for ways to help.

We have had snow here too - but fingers crossed it is disappearing just as quickly as it falls.
I took mum for a clinic appointment this morning (memory clinic for results of scan from before Christmas) then we have another appointment on Thursday for a scan - this time to measure the lymphoma to see if the tablets are working.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Just catching up. Little lad’s tonsillitis is getting better well he’s back to school now. Daughter has taken her own stitches out, the horse’s medical kit was useful. Shes got hypotension probably from blood loss so is not back to work so I’m redundant. In some cases tonsils stop the infections going elsewhere. In my girls case as a child under no circumstances would they take them out because she had a reaction to strep. She eventually had them out aged 25.
My cold is better I’ve given it away. OH has a more serious version though 😁
Medical report all done and dusted.

Whispersync is amazing (so long as you have the signal for it to work - which I don't at my home train station). My kindle cloud read has just opened at the very last sentence I heard through the audible app.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hour long bitch session with the ed consultant after work. I resent the unpaid overtime.

Wine is helping my mood.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12607 comments Well, we had snow last night, which then froze, so everything is white and pretty, just slippy! It was so pretty that me and a colleague who arrived at the same time took pictures! Blue skies today, but car did say -3 at 7.40. Got to pick Sooty's ashes up from my neighbours vets, as she can’t face it – sometimes I wish we used the same one, as I was at mine last night. Quite a bit of housework to do tonight too, luckily I’m not as sore today.

I use them for sciatica Janet – but they don’t work for everything, couldn’t get them to work on my bunion the other year, but am going to try again with my toe. They are only about £5 for 12, so worth a go, but it did take a few goes to get the right position for them to work on my back, and the quality has reduced, I need to put a plaster over them now or they come off in a couple of days, I used to get over a week. Mary uses them for her knees, but think she uses stronger ones than me. Good luck for your mums results. Glad that your cold is better Lynne, sorry that your daughter still has complications. That tea sounds lovely Jud - loose or bags? Glad you managed to get out for food Kath.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments It's loose leaf tea, https://freebird.ventures/product/che... I bought a different brand which isn't as nice as this one (it's more rooibos than marzipan). I had to go stalking on the facebook page of the cafe I first had it in to find out what brand of tea they used, I'll be buying it next time.
