Petra | 3324 comments I finished listening to The World to Come by Dara Horn.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It includes so many elements that are about so much more than a stolen painting. The painting was a good focal point for the philosophical elements throughout the story.
I particularly liked the story of the paradise of Mortals & Natals. That was really endearing and special.

Dale, that's the book link, not your review link. I looked for it, but it didn't come up.

PattyMacDotComma I can't believe I'd never read Rebecca! I thought, well, 80 years old, classic, guess I SHOULD read it. Silly me for waiting. Daphne du Maurier nailed it!

Chrissie I have completed Gone So Long, it being Andre Dubus III's latest novel and a decade since his last.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I finished The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley. Very loosely based on Beowulf, it takes place in and around a gated community.
I had some issues with the constant shifts, but the novel is compelling and raises some interesting questions.

Paul Lockman | 72 comments I just finished Hanns and Rudolf: The German Jew and the Hunt for the Kommandant of Auschwitz by Thomas Harding. I thought it was very well-researched and entertaining and an excellent addition to the historical body of work around the holocaust. 5 stars. Here’s my review

Norton Beckerman. (nortsb) | 97 comments I'm in the middle of reading babel-17 by Samuel r. Delany. When I read the first few pages I thought the book wasn't for me. But I pushed on. Now it's hard to put down. The story, the characters, the writing are all excellent. I would highly recommend babel-17.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I finished The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker. It is a retelling of the Iliad mostly in the voice of Briseis, Achilles' concubine. I thought Part 1 was very strong, but Parts 2 and 3 were pretty much a basic retelling of the events in the epic.

dely | 5214 comments I have finished Chiamami sottovoce by Nicoletta Bortolotti 3*

No English edition. It talks about the years when Italians emigrated to Switzerland for seasonal jobs and they weren't allowed by the Swiss law to bring with them their children (and it was this way till 1996). These children had to live hidden in attics or basements and weren't allowed to go out or to be noisy, otherwise they would have been caught and sent in orphanages. Very interesting topic because nearly no one knows about it.

Great review Raul!

Lessing has such huge range in her writing - of the 5 books I've read by her, none of them was similar to any of the others. Sometimes she's quirky and prickly - (I heard her talk once about the effects of music, and it was a bit odd) - but she is an extremely intelligent, gifted woman! I think she's a fantastic writer.

Thank you Greg! She truly is so gifted and interesting, I was so surprised when I found out she dropped out of school at 13 and then an autodidact for the rest of her life. This is the third of her books I've read and I'm certainly reading more.

It's not your lack of experience with SF Hannah - the book is a bit difficult, partly because it is so unpredictable and partly because it's so imaginative, so foreign to normal experience.

Glad you liked it though! I did as well, especially after reading the sequel. I found The Fall of Hyperion extremely satisfying!

I'm glad to hear that my experience wasn't a one-off. It is truly a unique read.

I have some decent reading time today and look forward to diving into the second book!
