PattyMacDotComma I strongly recommend Jo Rooks's lovely new children's book about emotions, A Box of Butterflies, for all families and schools. It includes helpful notes for the adults, too.

Chrissie I stuck in a short story by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman. The story, A New England Nun, is available free online in audio and written format. It is also in A New England Nun and Other Stories. I have put a link to it online in my review.

Leslie | 16369 comments I recently finished an old Kindle freebie (2014) mystery/thriller - Elusive. Above average for a freebie; decent writing and plenty of suspense. The plot was not very original (shades of Robert Ludlum and Helen McInnes) but still enjoyable. 3*

And I listened to the audiobook of Wodehouse's Big Money which was marvelous fun. 4.5*

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished England, their England - a book I would never have heard of if not for the Guardian's list of 1000 novels. I thought it was very funny & am glad that I decided to buy it when it wasn't available in my library! 4*

FInished both Phineas Finn and The King's Speech: How One Man Saved the British Monarchy. The first I've loved - RE-loved! - the second liked; not as much as the film ...

message 2530: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Well, I gave the mystery genre a try. I read The Mysterious Affair at Styles. I will test Miss Marple later this month.

Laura, I thought the same about The King's Speech. The book was interesting but not as good as the movie.
I hardly ever say that.

I liked Phineas Finn a lot too. Trollope is a Victorian author I do like. He has tons of books, but they tend to be rather similar.

dely | 5214 comments I finished reading a non-fiction about various wars of recent times, but also that are not well known: Il male inutile: Dal Kosovo a Timor Est, dal Chiapas a Bali, le testimonianze di un reporter di guerra 3,5*

It's a collection of reportages written by a war reporter.

My Italian/English review. The English review can be found at the bottom and I added it because the book will soon be translated into English: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I do agree, but I sometimes need to know what I'm going to find ...

message 2544: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished two rereads today: The Brandons and The Lady in the Lake.

I reread Angela Thirkell's The Brandons by listening to the audiobook from Hoopla, narrated by Nadia May. It was even better that way & I give the audiobook edition 4.5* and highly recommend it to fans of Jane Austen and/or Miss Read. Similar gentle humor & romance.

Chandler's 4th Philip Marlowe remains my least favorite - more violence than I care for. Though the book is much more comprehensible than the film versions!

Chrissie I have completed The Narrow Corner. The novel starts with the following quote: "Short therefore, is man's life, and narrow is the corner of the earth wherein he dwells." It is taken from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. Both the book's title and the quote well fit the novel.
