What have you just read? Opinions, recommendations, reviews Part 2
I just finished my first book by Penelope Lively -- The Photograph. Lots to think about but easy to read. I give it 4*.Any recommendations of other books by this author I should try?
I'm a fan of Jacob M. Appel who writes quirky short stories. I just read The Amazing Mr. Morality: Stories. A mixed bag.

Just finished Everybody's Son
and loved it to 5 stars. Great character development and plot. SO smartly written!
I have finsiehd The Golden Ass by Apuleius 5*This was such a funny and witty story! A too curious young man transforms himself in a donkey because of a magical unguent. He knows the cure but being a donkey he is stolen by some thieves that need a donkey to carry their stolen goods. So his misadventures begin and there is a lot to laugh. He is a donkey, but still has a human brain.

Leslie, I picked Moon Tiger, Family Album and How It All Began, as my favourites by Lively. I have read quite a few of hers and am a big fan.
My review The Stranding by Karen ViggersI found it disappointing https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm obsessed with this guy! The Final Detail by Harlan Coben

I give it 4*.I loved Penelope Lively's childrens books The Whispering Knights, A Stitch In Time, The House In Norham Gardens. I also enjoyed The Road to Lichfield when our library misplaced it on the teen shelf.
But as an adult I didn't like Oleander, Jacaranda: A Childhood Perceived and Consequences was so dull I DNFed.
Has her writing changed or is it me?
Finished The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsessionhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Well since obviously this one hit home for you I thought I would start there. Thank you for your guidance.
Bette, how is it going with your reading? You were in such a slump. A sure win is always a book by Kent Haruf.
W O W !First novel by Knox, a masterpiece. Read this book NOW.
My review of Sirens the new crime noir by Joseph Knox.
Complex and very dark, painful and relentless, brutally real and noir and powerful, with superb prose... And best of all, the tragic hero is my favourite kind of gumshoe: the Philosopher-Detective. A truly extraordinary book.
Chrissie, still in a slump. Meanwhile, my sister is reading all the new releases I have bought recently. :)
Well, I just finished the best book I have read this month: The Tie That Binds by none other than the extremely talented Kent Haruf. The audiobook is wonderfully narrated by Danny Campbell. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
If you are a fan of Leo Tolstoy, you might like Dover Publication’s new book of Selected Short Stories.

I’m not going to win any popularity contests with my review of The Rules of Magic, the ‘prequel’ to Practical Magic which Alice Hoffman wrote 20 years earlier. (I think I should have read it first.)

Has anybody read anything by Michelle Paver? I just devoured Dark Matter in one setting and I also loved Thin Air when I read it last year. I want her to write more!
