Finished Venezia. Il leone, la città e l'acqua by Cees Nooteboom.
I generally don't praticularly like travel books, but Venice is so beautiful that also reading about it could be a bliss.
And I definitly need to go back there soon!

PattyMacDotComma I've decided to read some of the 'good' books I somehow missed when they were published, and the 1995 Pulitzer winner, The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields was one. What a writer! A life in a century!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Celestial Hunter by Roberto Calasso, translated from Italian by Richard Dixon.

Calasso moves at such a dizzying speed that it's hard to keep up with him. A fascinating theory of the shift in consciousness from man as hunted to man as hunter. Calasso weaves mythology, rituals, cults into his discussion. He cites philosophers, historians, and all manner of academicians. His leaps and bounds are difficult to follow at times. His knowledge is extensive. An amazing book.

Me, too, Pam!
I enjoyed Isaac Asimov's aptly named short story The Gentle Vultures about aliens waiting for us to blow ourselves to kingdom come. I share his anti-nuclear-war sentiments.

PattyMacDotComma Another in the Little People/BIG DREAMS series for children is the stunningly colourful Pablo Picasso by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. The illustrations by Teresa Bellón are outrageously wild - as was the artist himself, of course. Loved it!

Finished this week end my first Gurnah: Desertion. Liked it a lot, even if I have to admit it is not an easy book.
It teases you, but make you think; a lot.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Writers & Lovers by Lily King.
It was a light, entertaining read about an aspiring author. I wasn't as enthused about it as I thought I would be. It had the feel of a made-for-television show.

PattyMacDotComma Women's words - finally found? Imaginative Aussie author Pip Williams's young character, Esme, wants to put together The Dictionary of Lost Words. Why were all the ignored words for, by, and about women considered dirty? (Many still are.)

Robert | 64 comments Just read for the umpteenth time, The Day of the Triffids which was later adapted to the big screen. The novel is way better than the movie, which had cool photography and great actors.

Kathleen and Karin, I loved it back when I read it. I think it is my favorite of his so far, but I also quite liked The Painted Veil and some others too.

message 8647: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 129 comments I've finished my first book of the year! Its a short one so that I could at least get something finished while I have some chunksers on the go.

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

It was a well written and engaging essay but I'm not sure it merited publication as a stand alone as it is very short and quite basic.
