Joy D I am learning that I don't much care for books where children are put in harm's way and not protected, especially if there's not much to offset the dark tone. I still plan to read this author's Cold Mountain.

Nightwoods by Charles Frazier - 2 stars - My Review

Joy D This sad story is based on the author’s family. It contains subtle humor that helps it not feel overwhelmingly depressing. The author delicately explores suicide, mental health treatment, shame, guilt, and right to die issues. It is a novel about love and pain. It is not for anyone dealing with depression.

All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews - 4 stars - My Review

Joy D Themes include belonging, independence, dealing with change, and the joys of living a simple life. Berry advocates stewardship of the earth and compassion for its inhabitants. I enjoyed spending time in Port William and found this book delightful.

Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry - 4 stars - My Review

PattyMacDotComma Robert Pobi is new to me, but I enjoyed City of Windows - (think skyscrapers/sniper) - so much that I've already started the second in the series. I appreciate a good guy who IS a good guy.

Joy D High fantasy is not a genre I often read, but despite it not being in my wheelhouse, I found it captured my interest. I enjoyed accompanying Lazlo on his journey of discovery. His character conveys a sense of wonder at all he finds. The primary drawback, for me, is the ending. I usually do not care for setups to a sequel and this book ends with a cliffhanger. Still, I am glad I read it and think regular readers of fantasy will appreciate it as much, or more, than I did.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri. A very moving and sensitive portrayal of a Syrian couple as refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria. The story was well-crafted and the writing was excellent.

Michael (fisher_of_men) Finished two excellent books last week: John Adams by David McCullough and Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. The Stevenson book has motivated me to begin looking for a local prison reform group to join.

PattyMacDotComma Fantastic 2005 best-seller! The Glass Castle is an outstanding memoir by Jeannette Walls, who was lucky to make it to adulthood, more or less intact, despite her neglectful, nutty parents.
