dely | 5214 comments I have finished The Last Day of a Condemned Man. My edition has three stories by Hugo, but for now I have read only this one. 3*

dely | 5214 comments Seen that my brain "switched" to French, I decided to read also another story by Victor Hugo that is in my edition of The Last Days of a Condemned; Bug-Jargal. Claude Gueux: Claude Geux. 4,5*

Here the topic reminds me even more of Les Misérables. Claude Geux is a convicted: he had stolen because hungry and to feed his wife and child. It's a very short story but the descriptions of Claude and the prison director are just marvellous and Hugo is able to point out his ideas.

I have added another piece to my English review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

PattyMacDotComma After loving Aussie author Jane Harper's debut novel, The Dry, I was really looking forward to her second one, Force of Nature, which takes place in the wet.
Force of Nature (Aaron Falk, #2) by Jane Harper 3.5★ My review

Paul (paa00a) | 202 comments It took me forever to finish The Great Influenza, which could have been so much better. But then took no time at all to plow through The Girl in the Tower, which could not have been better.

Paul Lockman | 72 comments I recently finished Her by Garry Disher, pretty intense, a quick read, wished it was longer, 4.5 stars. My short review

message 519: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Well, most everybody seems to love Ordinary Grace...........except me.

My review; https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I ask myself why I should even bother to give examples proving the validity of what I claim when no one thinks as I do anyhow. Books I like make me happy, but books like this depress me. I do NOT, NOT, NOT undertand this book's popularity.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments Finished Unnatural Causes (A Dr. Katie LeClair Mystery #1) by Dawn Eastman Unnatural Causes by Dawn Eastman, a quick and quick paced cosy read. My no spoiler review can be found at

Angela M wrote: "I finished The Largesse of the Sea Maiden: Stories.4 stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show..."

Love the title - thanks for the superb review Angela. All I've read by him was Jesus' Son - most of those are addiction/drug oriented, and I've always been curious to read one of his later works.

message 523: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Greg, thanks so much . I loved the title too . In that story there is only a mention at the very end of reading a collection of folk tales . “Apples that summon sea maidens”. I’m not too sure I really get the significance. I have only read Train Dreams by him and liked that a lot.

message 525: by Angela M (new)

I keep hearing good things about him Phrynne, and I will certainly read one eventually .. it seems though that his books are often very long, close to 1,000 pages! That's quite an investment, but from what everyone tells me, it might well be worth it!

I do definitely enjoy fantasy and sci-fi! Other than perhaps a certain sort of romance novels, there are really no genres that I dislike as a whole - it all depends on the book and the author!

message 539: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished Bloodline (War of the Roses series #3). The action part is engaging, but I liked the characterization of the major players (Richard Neville, Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville) better. It's good historical fiction overall. 4 stars.
