My mother, an excellent cook and baker, uses/d all purpose flour for everything! Well, did, but now that she has dementia, she doesn't really bake anymore, but she can still manage to play Quiddler.

I made focaccia this weekend, using a recipe that has 1/2 whole wheat, 1/2 all-purpose flour. I usually use whole wheat for biscuits, but sometimes I do half and half.

We had a resident who was very sick and was tested for the virus but it came back negative. we are doing every thing possible to keep out residents safe. there are a few nursing homes in the state that have multiple cases and have already had some deaths. I am so stressed out and terrified for my residents and myself (I'm over 60). I have just been going to work and coming home. I can't even go see my own Mom because she is at a different nursing home (where my sister works) and none of the nursing homes are allowing visitors. At least I know my sister is there and is looking out for her. Please everyone stay home and stay safe.

It's the same where I live, care homes are closed off. A lot of the younger carers have moved into the homes to try and protect their residents. It's times like these I wish my granny was in a care home because she wouldn't be on her own but she does have carers coming in which helps her routine otherwise she'd be sleeping all the time.

All over the world the same. Hopefully things are going to get better ... otherwise I really don't know how ecconimy will cope with this

Alannah I am glad your grandmother has help but she is probably better off than in a home. Most of the deaths in my state have been nursing home residents. It can be very hard to contain in a nursing home where you have dementia residents who wander in other people's rooms and don't have the sense to not cough or sneeze in your face. It can spread like wildfire in such an environment. That is my biggest fear.

Laura, I think the economy is going to take awhile to bounce back and some businesses may not be able to reopen. We will get through this . My heart goes out to all the health care workers who have lossed their lives trying to save people's lives. They are the true heroes.

My mother has dementia--it is a heart-wrenching disease and horrible to see a woman who was always extremely bright and highly capable deteriorate like this. She is still able to live at home because my father is alive and doesn't have either dementia or Alzheimer's. They really and truly cannot help it.

Nursing homes are dangerous in a number of ways, but when families are either unable or unwilling to care for their parents then this is better than nothing.

On Saturday night a friend called to say her husband hd falen and she didn't know if he broke anything. To play it safe, I told er tocall an ambulance since he was laying on the floor and she couldn't pick him up. I didn't hear from her till Sunday morning when they were taking tests. By evening they knew he broke his hip and had the operation Monday afternoon. On Wednesday he was transferred to a rehab facility where he will be for a couple of weeks. No one see him but my friend and her daughter are able to speak with him. This man is 91 and recently had serious heart surgery and came through it fine and now this, I think he's a super hero. Hoping that all of your family members and friends are well and getting help if needed.

Karin, my Mom has dementia also. it is so sad to see this smart, funny woman become a shell of the person she was. she lived with my brother until it was no longer safe for her to do so. she is now in the nursing home where my sister works which is about an hour away from where I am. I can't go see her but at least I know my sister is there watching out for her and I am watching out for other people's Moms and Dads who can't be here for them.

yeah Karin it is a horrible disease. I work with people with dementia every day and it is horrible to see them deteriorate to the point where they can no longer feed, clothe or bath themselves. it is a disease that strips you of all your dignity. I consider my day a success if I can get them to smile or laugh.

I haven't worked with people, but my mother's mother had it (I live far away so the changes were always more shocking--a bit less so now with my mother since we talk more on the phone) and then the wife of the couple we sit next to in church had it. Eventually her personality changed from sweet to feisty and finally combative so her husband finally had to put her in a nursing home--he looks much happier now, even thoguh he spends most of his time visiting her.

It was, and windy as well--I had to turn lights on during the day yesterday it got so dark a few times in our neck of the New England woods. Today it's windy but not raining or as cold.

LOL - I hope not too much like Ruth, Joan! As an aging single, I have learned to enjoy being alone and find that as much as I love my family, it kind of drives me crazy to be around them 24-7!

But I agree that it feels like a recess or pause, waiting for "real" life to begin again.

I have made pasta e fagioli - well, am in the process of making it. I decided to use dried beans rather than canned and despite soaking them overnight, they aren't ready yet so I am simmering the soup longer than the recipe called for in hope that they will be fully cooked. Of course, I haven't added the pasta yet!

Perhaps some of you might advise me about this. Since I made a pot of soup for 4-6 & am just one, should I not add the pasta to the big pot? I thought maybe I would add the pasta to my individual portions rather than the pot to avoid it getting bloated and soggy.

I usually add it only to my portion, the one I'm going to eat.
I cook the pasta separately so I can use the beans also for two or more times.
